Australian Idol 2024

Saoirse - Scott scars to your beautiful – she has a great voice. To be honest, I got a little bit distracted during her performance, so I don’t necessarily disagree with what Kyle was saying… She kind of does fade into the background like she’s very good, but she just doesn’t stand out. ⭐⭐
Yes, I was kind of waiting for the song to start. I do know the song and it's fine, but for an Idol performance it's all a bit one-level and never hits any peaks.

Okay - so I'm in the ad break right before they decide on the last three contestants to make it through to the top 12.
I'm hoping for Kym, Olivia and TJ... but there were some great performances tonight including Kiani.
Tyler wasn't brilliant but somehow still got the fast pass. Unfortunately, someone who delivered a fantastic performance tonight will have to go home because of that. There are less places left than there were great performances.

Thoughts on last nights show.

Jake - Take Me Back To You - Jake is a good artist. He doesn’t ever seem totally confident in himself though. He’s got a good voice and plenty of talent. ⭐⭐

Denvah - - at the start I wasn’t sure that I would continue to enjoy listening to her voice, in fact she’s just gotten better and better and she’s shot through to become one of my faves. I think Carmen’s advice is a good though, if she can use her yodel sparingly it will have more of an impact. Side note: she looked amazing! Beautiful performance. The guitar seemed unnecessary with this arrangement. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kym - Mamma Knows Best - she’s technically a very good singer and performer and I think she’s highly marketable. She’s got everything ready to go and that was a super strong performance. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tyler - Waves - I really like Tyler. I like the full sounding but almost breathy tones. I don’t even know if that makes sense. I think I’m trying to say he has good range, but I still like his voice. Marcia says it started shakey, but I didn’t really notice that. ⭐⭐⭐

The whole fast pass thing, Kyle already mentioned he would give it to someone who doesn’t do their best performance. I gather he already knew from the rehearsals that this wouldn’t be Tyler’s best. But anyway, I’m happy that Tyler goes through as I really like him.

Olivia - Greedy - oh no! I think Olivia is good, but she is lost in this song. I’m not even sure anyone would really do this song well live. The verse hasn’t got enough dynamics and the whole thing just doesn’t have enough light and shade for an idol performance. ⭐

Kiani - Rhannon - aside from the fact that she’s doing an old classic song, she does seem like she has a voice and a maturity beyond her years. She has great control and tone. Beautiful performance ⭐⭐⭐️ the way the judges are talking they didn’t expect to be putting Kiani through.

TJ - Peaches - I like that TJ brings something different to the show. Something that isn’t very highly represented in Australia. He makes his own beats and the production was 🔥 but the vocal just isn’t strong enough to make him stand out when you strip away all the bells and whistles. He’s quirky and fun. Gotta give him that. ⭐⭐️ Kyle says he changed the melody, I actually don’t think he changed it too much. (Also - no girls before marriage! lol)

I would definitely put Denvah, Kym and Kiani through. I assume they are going to want to put TJ through so maybe TJ instead of Kym or Kiani. Hard choice.

Kyle sends through TJ ⁉️ I guess it’s good to have something different. As long as Denvah gets through I’ll be ok with it. He’s rather poetic when he speaks.

Marcia send through Denvah ✅

Amy sends through Kiani ✅

Sad for Kim as she was so good, obviously she is the one they wanted to keep.
When they cut to Olivia and her head was down as she knew she wasn’t in was a bit heartbreaking.

In any case this year it’s a strong top 12 and I’m looking forward to the weekly live shows. 🎤

Just thought I'd drop in and provide my two cents... I'm only watching the performances and nothing else.

Dylan Wright- Walking in Memphis
The WGWG thing has really been played out on this show but I thought overall it was a good performance. He's got a nice rich voice and love the growl... I almost feel bad considering the show is likely to dump him back out on the street post-show as I definitely feel he's got a decent amount of marketing potential.

Drea Onamade - New Rules
Loved the song but the overall performance was lacking until the last quarter. Probably would have been better suited for X Factor than Idol if I'm honest. It really wasn't until she started to move around that she started to shine, just standing there she it was if she got swallowed up by the stage. X Factor would have given her more to work with. Fitting this song came from Dua's "girl give us nothing" era. Can't fault her voice though 👌.

Ripley Alexander - Back for Good
His is another performance I felt didn't give much until the latter half and wasn't helped one bit by only having 1:30. I like his song choice though, it's a classic (even though it's the only Take That song I know) and one that's easily sung in a modern style. That said I think he could get a little one note throughout the competition if he's too hard stuck in the heartthrob ballad niche. Definitely has post-show marketing potential in the right hands.

Imogen Spendlove - From This Moment On
Hated this song on her. For one there's something about not hearing Shania's country twang and while they tried to spice it up a little it's a little too low energy for a TV singing competition. She has a nice voice but I'm not sure what else is there. Overall it felt a bit like a space exposition... Void of intelligent life.

Bethany Byrne - Used to Be Young
Oh great another slow burn performance 🙄. I'm not familiar with the song either which probably didn't help. Overall meh... Can see why she was dropped. Girl bye.

Kobe White - When I Was Your Man
Wow the tables have turned... He was much better in the first quarter of the song and spent the latter parts screeching. Overall very odd performance reminiscent of bad karaoke. You could cut that awkwardness with a knife. Another one I'm not disappointed to know was dropped. Where did they find him?

Chenai Boucher - Zombie
Probably the best of the 3 that left from this group however she still failed miserably. I don't think she has the chops to pull off what she's going for and this performance was completely void any real emotion, angst, or energy for that matter. Her voice as well is very one dimensional. See you never, girl👋.

Amy Reeves - Think
Mixed feelings about this performance... Like the voice just don't think it was a fitting song that really showcased it well. It was missing that deep soulful richness and that really left the hook feeling a bit flat. A song like Jessie J/Ariana Grande/Nikki Minaj - Bang Bang would have given her a similar flavour but more modern and better suited to her voice. She also very obviously ran out of breath at the end of the song. Overall wasn't bad but wasn't great either. I'm 100% sure she has a much better performance in her.

Trent Richardson - Heaven
Meh. Not a fan of the voice and it was a rather pedestrian song choice. Can't say much else other than he should be an easy boot from the Top 12.

Natasha Rose - Part of Me
Another meh performance. Not a huge Katy Perry fan to begin with, but if she was dead set on doing Katy, I think she has better songs she could have chosen from. I also thought she kind of mumbled her way through the song as I could barely make out what she was singing for the majority of the performance. Very rough. Another girl, bye moment for me.

Issac McCallum - Say You Won't Let Go
Nice voice but absolutely zero stage presence. Nothing else I can say really.

Ivana Ilic - Remember
Loved it! Great voice, song choice, and performance. My only criticism being that she's almost too much of a Becky Hill clone. Definite post-show marketability and would be interesting to see how they'd "change"/position her so that it's not such an obvious comparison.

Jackson Smith - Hero
Overall I don't mind the voice but hated the song choice. Don't think he's much of a "performer" and much more suited to singing covers on YouTube or TikTok. Something where he can sit down, do his thing, in an intimate space rather than a stage.

Saoirse Harding - Scars to Your Beautiful
Everything about this performance screams music school. Easily the weakest so far. Not even worthy of a girl bye or see you never.🥱

Jake Carlson - Take Me Back
The definition of WGWG. Nothing special. Should be in a pub somewhere with his band singing covers. Not worthy of an Idol stage. See you never 👋.

Denvah Baker-Moller - Perfect
I think she's a bit too one note and squeaky clean for my liking. The generic sweet girl image and vocal style does absolutely nothing for me. I'd like someone in her style to be a little more rough around the edges with a bit of "bad girl" country vibe. Well sung but very pedestrian song choice. Nothing we all haven't heard a thousand times over by now. As she stands right now I don't see any post-show marketability.

Kym Miaco - Mamma Knows Best
More than a bit all over the place but refreshing to see someone trying to do more than just the bare minimum. This is a great example of where cutting out the workshop stage really doesn't allow for much growth. This was "bad" but I think she had some potential and probably could have improved if there was more opportunity for that potential to have been recognized, nurtured, and actually critiqued.

Tyler Hammill - Waves
Interesting voice but really didn't get much from the performace. It got better in the last quarter when he finally picked up the guitar but otherwise he's another that was swallowed up by the stage. Overall pretty uninspired.

Olivia Brittion - Greedy
Bad Kareoke. Girl GTFO.

Kiani Smith - Rhiannon
This wasn’t half the moment she thought it could be. Sung well but really didn’t feel like an Idol stage performance. There’s no “life” or “sparkle” in the room aside from for that last note. Idol in it's prime years wouldn't have tollerated a performance like this and honestly it shouldn't fly in the modern era either.

TJ Zimba - Peaches
Mixed feelings here... Out of anyone so far he's shown the most "artistry" and there's definite post-show marketability, the downside was the performance. I don't know who's coaching these kids behind the scenes but when you only have 1:30 you can't wait for the last 20 to 30 seconds to bring it. This was such an obvious slow burn and it's really a shame as right out of the box he sparks me as the most interesting of the Top 21.

Overall pretty pedestrian offering, there's some decent singers in the mix (better group than last year) with commercial potential, but it's pretty clear this still very much a TV show with little to no interest in being anything beyond that. The song choices were all very standard/expected songs pretty much all sung the way we all know them. I may pop in again but not really seeing much of a reason to stick with it.

Now that we're further along in the competition, Kyle is being a harsher critic than before. I guess that makes some sense since the aim is to have all elite talent in the top 12. I'm watching now, and there's only been Imogen, Isaac and Drea so far. He wasn't at all thrilled with Imogen or Isaac, but was complimentary of Drea.
I think Isaac has the best male voice still in the competition. I have everything crossed for him that all his performances go well even though there are aspects of this whole competition that don't come easily to him.
And now Dylan is slowing down I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) to ballad speed. Now that's different.

TJ was a whole lot of fun but not really a vocalist again. I still liked his performance though, I find him entertaining.
Kiani was a hair's breadth away from a wardrobe malfunction for most of that performance. It was almost "Hello girls" 😲
She did well to get through that while at the same time having to attend to the top half of her outfit to stop it from slipping down.

I hope you do as I enjoyed your analysis and comments.

Nothing gets the party started like ballad speed! Weird to reward him from failing to try to meet the brief.

I agree. He's a bit rough and ready, but I hope he gets through on his underdog status. He really has the most beautiful voice. If he'd known it was cool to pop out a ballad in party week, he could've sung it at his usual speed.

Well I thought it was a car crash tonight. Maybe party music has changed since my day, but I found it all dreary.
RedFoo? Good god.
I did like seeing Ce Ce Peniston, though Imogen murdered her song.

It also shows where I am not looking, because I didn't notice any near wardrobe malfunctions.
