Australian Idol 2024

Just caught up the last two nights.

Imogen - Finally - I think she’s very talented but a little pitchy in this performance. She kinda got lost. I still think she deserves to go through. I like that they are giving them a longer performance time. ⭐⭐⭐

Luke - he has got really nice tone, why does he have to do a faster song, I bet Ripley doesn’t! He lost his lyrics and lost his way a bit. But it had moments of a great performance ⭐⭐⭐

Drea - Boo Thang - hard to judge, could barely hear her vocal. A fun performance. She’s very confident, but still a bit endearing. ⭐⭐⭐

Dylan - 500 Miles - wow. What a cool version and it really highlighted his excellent one. Definitely the best Dylan has been and probably my fave of the night. This is his Ripley moment. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

TJ - Party Rock Anthem - this guy probably should have been on AGT as opposed to idol. He’s a great producer and makes some interesting choices, but let’s face it. He’s not a strong vocalist. He’s kinda like an Australian version of Will I Am. I enjoyed it. ⭐⭐😋

Kiani - Cheap Thrills - Sia is a hard one to take in. Such a big song. Again I feel like she got lost in the song and production. ⭐⭐

Denvah - 9 to 5 - I would have thought this was a good song choice but it didn’t really do it for me. I don’t think it actually showed off her voice, kept her in a lower register without her yodel which took away what makes her special. Great performing though. She moved and made it a party! ⭐⭐⭐

Amy - Ain’t No Other Man - PERFECT song choice for her. Huge vocals but she pulled it off. Great performance. Not everyone could hit those notes as effortlessly. Love her ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ripley - Uptown Girl - I’m a little bit torn with Ripley. He’s very talented. He seems like angrily nice guy, he has beautiful tone and texture to his vocal. But I just feel like he is a bit of a one trick pony. It wasn’t even as of last week was upbeat or anything different, last week he just stayed a bit more faithful to the original melody and nailed it. When you change things up it’s easier to hide behind imperfection, not that I think there was anything wrong with that performance, in fact I loved it. I just wish we saw some more diversity from him. I guess I wouldn’t necessarily be saying that if he was just his own artist, I just think he needs to bring something else to deserve the title of being Australian Idol. All that being said, I would rate tonight’s performance highly. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ivana - Waiting All Night - a fine performance. I agree with Marcia at times she seemed to get lost in it and the big notes ran away from her, but she’s as a solid singer and put on a good show. ⭐⭐⭐

Trent - Shut up and Dance - I think he’s probably been brought far enough along. I think I said last week he is the token country guy. That wasn’t even a very country take on the song. Likeable enough guy. Not a great performance ⭐

Tyler - Pompeii - not the strongest vocalist, but very likeable and a good performance. I do like his voice ⭐⭐⭐

I thought the point of moving to more generic themes was so they could showcase more contemporary music?
I'm old and I do like some old songs BUT I'm really sick to death of most of them being recycled ad nauseam on Idol tbh and IF I want to hear them again I will listen to the OG versions which are usually the best (with some exceptions). Yes, more contemporary songs please!

My thoughts exactly.

Surprising results or not?
Not really. Imogen didn't have a lot of "it factor". As far as having natural stage presence and being able to work a camera etc goes... she wasn't there yet. People were divided on whether she had a good voice or not, with some describing it as a cross between singing and screaming. I went back and forth on that myself, but I wouldn't say she's without talent.

I like Ripley, and I wouldn't have minded seeing another performance or two... but I wasn't buying the way they were talking him up. They were really overdoing that, especially with trying to convince us that he's this year's "heartthrob". I'm almost afraid to mention it, because I'm not sure how this might be tied in to his identity, but people weren't sure what to make of all the nail polish and pearls either 🤷‍♀️ (based on other online discussions)

I’ve quickly scrolled down to the bottom of this thread without reading any spoilers about tonight’s show. I couldn’t watch live. Just coming on to have a whinge that it’s now almost an hour after it finished and it’s still not on 7Plus! 😡

Personally, I wasn't a fan of Imogen's as I prefer more interesting voices but yes, she does have talent.

Ripley...umm yeah...I get where you're coming from but perhaps it was some sort of statement that some people weren't ready for? The heartthrob crap turned into 'disappointment' ? Shame if that's the case...should only have been judged on his performances BUT they were a bit same, same tbh although I liked them.

They're hopeless! Takes at least 30 to 45 mins to get them up!

Haha I hope it was your thoughts without my many typos/autocorrect. Have fixed it above.

So I opened Facebook and got spoiled anyway. It is a bit of a shock. They kept calling him the heartthrob and he seemed like the kind of person young girls would love. Problem is, the young girls are obviously not watching and/or not invested enough to vote. I’m sure he was shocked as he was so hyped.

I would have put money on Ripley winning the whole thing.
So from what I can gather one person went home from each nights performances? That seems stupid, seeing as though it’s a top 12 … would be interesting to know if Ripley got more votes than TJ

Yes, the sing off is completely pointless when the result is already locked in. What would make it work is if the judges had a golden save that they could use if one of them was too good to lose.

It's a shame that Ripley went, and that larger girls are being targeted even when their vocals are better.

I usually watch live but the other night I used 7Plus and noticed the same, it took ages for them to upload the episode. TENplay and 9NOW are pretty much instant with Survivor and MAFS.

It's a disgrace...guys @ 7Plus need to pedal harder!

I actually really like covers don’t get me wrong I guess my problem with this show is how dated some of the songs are and how over done they are. Nothing is wowing me. The song choices are for the most part very safe.

Very good point... he could have even been ahead of more than one other person in the votes.

They really are severely limited in song choice... they're given a catalogue of songs to choose from and that's it.
