Australian Idol 2024

They really are severely limited in song choice... they're given a catalogue of songs to choose from and that's it.
I’m aware they have a list but I know back in the day they could request the show get clearance for other songs…

Also whoever is in charge of the approved songs isn’t doing a great job.

This is how you cover… Yes, she’s had 20+ years to hone her craft but I think she’s always kind of sang any song like she’s owned it… Familiar but undeniably Kelly.

I'm glad that they have such a big crowd there tonight. Having a big live audience breathes more life into the show.

So far there's just been Dylan with Have You Ever Seen the Rain. He did a great job of it too.

Drea is up next.

Drea did Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian.... then she burst into tears. Judges all talked about how it was good to see her so vulnerable etc... I started thinking they need a porter to work on the show to carry around everyone's baggage.

Denvah did Call Me Maybe. Hmmm... the judges are raving about that too, I think it didn't work for her. I otherwise like her though, I just never would have picked that song for her.

TJ and Ivana are the last two for the night (I'm not sure of the order, I think maybe TJ is next).

Ivana sang I'm Outta Love... and yeah, it was pretty good. The judges didn't say anything about this but I think she was trying to hit notes that were too low for her at the beginning... once the song picked up (and it goes higher as it does) then it was in her register.

So on the official Facebook page they have posted a picture of TJ with the caption "John Farnham would be very proud TJ
👏
#AustralianIdol"
Here's the emoji responses to the post so far (I've removed FB user's names and pics)

The official X (Twitter) account made the same post, and they've turned off comments there. You can still comment on all the others.

I wanted to like TJ, I really did.

It isn't that 'You're The Voice' is such an iconic song that it shouldn't be touched.

You could still do a good version of it that did it justice.

But... this wasn't it.

It wasn't by any stretch of the definition "good', or even 'listenable".

It was a horrible mess with vocals nowhere near the standard most have to meet to stay on the show.

Sorry to say, Ricki-Lee and the judges are lying by saying otherwise.

I get that they want to build him up, and stay on the side of what is cool, but come on.

There comes a time when you just have to be honest and admit when something sounds terrible.

He will of course be safe, and probably win the whole thing.

I watched it too late to vote last week. But I

Notice tonight they are saying vote as many times as you like. Was last years a 10 vote maximum?

Dylan - Have you Ever Seen The Rain - I was a bit worried when I saw him choose this song, as beautiful as it is, it doesn’t really have big moments to showcase your vocal… however the way he built it to a crescendo was very good. ⭐⭐⭐️ - Amy’s choice!

Drea - Battlescars - oooh I am like Guy Sebastian fan #1. But I’m not sure this is suited to her. I guess there’s a benefit to having Carmen Smith vocal coaching you through this one as she has sung this with Guy literally hundreds and hundreds of times. I’m also concerned she is going to force the emotion. Ok so her vocal on the chorus is good, but the rap was a bit weak. Not her strongest performance ⭐⭐️ not sure about the crying at the end. It didn’t feel natural. Am I being too cynical? I think it’s because she never explained how she emotionally connected to the song other than comparing herself to Guy as doing music teaching ?! - Kyles choice!

Ricki-Lee “I love winning… not on this show though” 🤭 😭 😂

Denvah - Call Me Maybe - another choice that I’m not sure is suited. Denvah certainly has as interesting voice, and I understand why the vocal coaches have told her to reign the yodel in, the problem is… when she sings deeper with no yodel, it’s just not as interesting. Quite frankly I find it a bit grating. I’m going to put her in a similar category as Ripley as being a one trick pony whose one trick is excellent, but not much else! ⭐️ - Marcia’s choice.

Ivana - (What’s Love Got To Do With It (Kygo version) - I was going to say that this sounds like a great choice for her, and now she’s going to change song 🤷🏽‍♂️) - actual song: I’m Outta Love. Ok as soon as she starts singing and I realise her voice is actually right for this song. A little shaky on the first verse. Hit her stride in the chorus. She didn’t go for the high note at the end of the bridge. But some good runs. ⭐⭐️- Marcia’s choice.

TJ - You’re the Voice - before he sings I want to say that the judges keep saying they believe he has a good vocal and he is hiding behind his production. I actually don’t think he has a good vocal, he’s more of a Will I Am type and may never performs a killer live vocal but he can potentially have a good career doing producing and arranging songs etc. Anyways, on tonight’s performance. It does sound like a black eyed peas version of You’re The Voice. I am really enjoying it, not that his vocal is anything worth mentioning, but interesting almost cinematic, dramatic re-working of this Aussie classic song. Very original. ⭐⭐⭐️ - Amy’s choice.

To be completely honest. No one blew me away tonight. I guess I would give the judges choice to TJ for most original or … Dylan for the most consistent performance, I suspect they won’t give it to him two weeks in a row, so perhaps Ivana? Denvah is good but not her best tonight although the judges seemed to love it. Truthfully. I don’t think I will be sending any votes myself.

Judges are saying they are giving it to a person who showed a different side so I guess Denvah.

Save actually went to = Drea. lol. The only one I didn’t mention. Dry tears again??

It was the same total free-for-all last year... people were using some kind of software that you can set to send text messages on repeat and leaving it running all night long.

See that's the difference.
You @bleachy_dude enjoyed the performance while addressing the flaws in the vocals. It's fine to like something,
It's just annoying when the judges are disingenuous and build something up to be something it isn't.
That's exactly it Megs! I like TJ and I think he's very talented. He just does not have the best vocals. Sure he can produce and mix stuff but at the end of the day it was not as great as the judges tried to sell to us tonight.

I think there’s a little bit of a bias where the judges are desperate to prove why he originally got given the golden ticket immediately at his audition. It’s a bit of saving face. I really feel like AGT would have been better for TJ. He’s no doubt talented and Idol ain’t necessarily only about the vocal, but I feel like it should be a big part of it. He just doesn’t have that.
