2014 Today I ......

OK so I just finished them, it was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, also it was kind of fun! I did a lot of practice on some of the off cuts because I only had enough material for one pair of pants and because this material was on hand already I didn't want to waste it and have to go and buy some.
Now my next project will be to make a full pair of Pjs (top & bottom).

Here you go @Jam :)

@bleachy_dude HAHA at high school I had to option of doing textiles or woodwork and I chose woodwork, kind of wish I had chose textiles instead because this was pretty easy to make and a lot of fun.;)
Cute froggies. Well done!

I wished we had the choice to choose something else :p

LOL! This takes me back to high school, in sewing I made a pair of boxer shorts and then tie-dyed them. Haha.

Good luck!

Ha! I did the same thing - in fact I won a prize at the local fête for my sewing endeavours. Obviously my choice to do Home Ec paid off as even to this day I'm the go to guy to reattach buttons because that's apparently such a foreign skill.

Onya Inigo ! Good fun making/fixing/being imaginative with your own (less than 6 fingered) hands, eh ? So much better and more satisfying than looking at a TV or computer screen, yes ?

I'm the "sew"er in the derspatz & lscp household and by complete coincidence, "Today I ..." took delivery of my new Speedy Stitcher (TM) and I'm now feeling very much so Awl-right and looking forward to taking my recent interest in leather-work to a hole and bloody fingered new level ! :)

Lately I've been collecting (op shops are awesome !) random leather bits and pieces (including a buff leather welder's coat, a fine/soft leather Canadian jacket, all sorts of real leather belts, the odd leather bag, etc, etc) and am almost ready to start turning it all into a one-of-a-kind medieval archer's coat/jacket. Depending on how that goes, I may get into making original/recycled/one of a kind type medieval (and/or medievalvikingpiratecivilwarsteampunky. lol) stuff for sale, complete with some sort of "derspatz"/sparrow logo or something.

Why not, hey ?

our Raven would be pleased to read about this sort of thing I reckon.

I've also got me all sorts of eye-lets and celtic type design badge thingoes coming and about 29 metres of different coloured leather thonging. Add a couple of brass coins from meaningful years (to put on my Oz soft leather brimmed hat wot I'm in the middle of turning into a tricorn) and I'll soon be more than a disturbing sight on the archery range.

Especially on the occasions when I can wear my double loop belt that hangs my Thorpe Falchion and my Scottish dirk type arming knife. lol.

Mmmmmmm, I just lurving walking into the house now that there is a constant smell of leather and sword sharpening oil in the air.

lscp seems to like it to, though is getting a tad tired of being requested to "put the lotion on it's skin". :D

Oooops, our Raven prolly would like to read that ... :)

ok, about an hour later I'm about half way through sewing back on the other ends of the tan braid belt shown to the mid right of the previous picture but this time just a few inches down from the other end of the belt which I'd already modified with some buckles off something else.

speedystichertest.jpg

A couple of minor mistakes in the stitching (IE, where I've pulled the other side of the thread back through too much) but pretty happy with it.

What is it going to be ?

Dunno yet. Maybe some sort of bow or sword sling or even some sort of hide or fur/shaggy skin cloak fastener or quiver strap. Doesn't really matter at the moment ... I'm kinda interested to see how the project evolves. Looks like I'll have braiding heading out in three different directions after I've finished the Speedy Stitching on of those two egg shaped panels on either side ... or 12 individual lengths of thong to fan out across / thread through something.

Oh well, whatever it may end up being, tis nice to be doing something new and different with my fingers. :)

...

...haha!... very clever Derspatz... I like it!... by the way...

...complete with some sort of "derspatz"/sparrow logo or something.

...is the sparrow a connection to your surname or something Derspatz... that's the second sparrow Avatar that you've had from memory so I'm just curious... the first sparrow was a silhouette of a sparrow against the sun methinks... wasn't it?... by the way... did you take the photo?... (I'm not sure if I've asked you this before?)... cheers.

...Derspatz... are you making that leather stuff from patterns of real historical medieval leather goods of times gone by or just making it up out of seeing similar stuff on other peoples medieval equipment that you've seen in your group of fellow 'medievians'?... (is that a word?)... cheers.

Howdy Sticky, good to see you back, BTW.

spatz / sperling = sparrow which is indeed my surname. I didn't take the silhouette photo but the current one of the kleiner spatz (small/little sparrow) hoping about the balcony rail of a certain dockside hotel in Auckland was taken by lscp on our honeymoon last year.

Nah to all of that Sticky. Just having some fun / experimenting at the moment. That said, our weaponry and various aspects of our clothing/armour etc is considerably authentic. My archer's sword is a battle ready forged version of the Thorpe Falchion that is on display at Norwich castle and our a goodly number of our arrows are feathered woods, for example.

Re: leather stuff, well I reckon it comes down to "what works", "what is available", "what do you feel like making/doing" and basically take a utilitarian approach to it all while adding own artistic or imaginative flair depending on time available. I mean, I could sling my quiver off a single leather strap ... but, since there was no TV back then and today was too wet to go hunting, why not turn that single leather strap into some sort of decorative / one of a kind weave ?

In this case, by the bed time last night, that old belt that I'd mostly picked apart and changed buckles and clips on and resewn an end on, looked like this:

dunnowhatyet.jpg

Still don't know which direction it will go next or what it will be used for in the end but that's my first "diamond weave" (platting 4 flat strands into a round cord) ... some lass on youtube taught me how to do that around 10pm last night. Took me a couple of goes (including having to unpick it all back to the start when I lost focus on whether I was working on the right side of the left side and couldn't be bothered trying to figure it out. lol). That's a clothes peg holding the end of it together at the moment.

Not tiring of your wife already I hope. ;)

lol. hey, it can't be fiddlin' and sax-in' all the time ... that just gives ya carpel-tunnel and keeps the missus awake while also annoying the neighbours ! :)

@Mr Stickyfingers der spatz does mean 'the sparrow' in German. It's also a children's song so there must be a connection there. :p

Which one were you thinking of. This one ?

or this one ?

etc. :-)

Oh, und "Meow" .... :)

...thanks for the 'welcome back' Derspatz... I'm guessing that you are of German descent perhaps?...(you can tell me to mind my own beeswax if you like lol!)... in regards to my other question...

...are you making that leather stuff from patterns of real historical medieval leather goods of times gone by or just making it up out of seeing similar stuff on other peoples medieval equipment that you've seen in your group of fellow 'medievians'?... (is that a word?)...

...I'm asking because a friend of mine... (now deceased unfortunately) used to be into all stuff like that and in medieval stuff in general (this was in the late 70's / early 80's)... he belonged to a 'medieval re-enactment' type group where they'd dress up in armour and stuff etc which I guess you guys must do... he used to do archery and stuff like that way back then... he even learned to how to make armour suits from someone within the group that knights or whoever must've worn before he died... he had actually begun to make his own suit of armour by starting with a helmet and was half-way through making it for himself when he died... (late 80's)... hence my interest when you post up stuff about medieval things...

...I once asked him why he liked all of that kind of stuff and he just said that one of his cousins was into it and took him along to some of those medieval re-enactment meetings and he got the passion for it... (hmmm... now I think of it... he never did ask me along to one of them... perhaps it was a personal thing?)... he was to say the least... an extraordinary character that was always interesting to talk to... also a very private person that sort of kept to himself... but he sure was passionate about stuff like that...

...sorry if I'm babbling on my friend... I'm just interested... (hmmm... perhaps that's why I wasn't invited along by him now I think of it?)... lol!... he was a lot older than me at that time and probably didn't want a younger big-mouthed mate babbling on to his medieval mates like a little kid asking dumb-arsed questions about everything I imagine... lol!... I guess some of that medieval stuff may have rubbed off onto me at some stage without me actually realising it... cheers.

...oopsies... sorry Derspatz... you must have been posting your reply to my second question while I was writing mine so disregard answering it lol!... cheers.

...that 'diamond weave' thingy that you made looks pretty smecky so far... the only time that I've ever made something like that was when I was in my early teens in London all those years ago... they were called... ' scooby doo's'... they were a craze at the time that swept England in the late 60's... the hippies at the time were into making them... that was the 'make love not war' times lol!... here is what they looked like...

...looks like the hippies stole medieval weaving techniques eh?... now I understand where the phrase... 'never trust a hippy' came from... (I think it was the 'Goodies' that came up with that phrase from memory)... lol!... cheers.

This has been sitting flatted on my HDD for a while because I couldn't come up with even a half-assed background for it, but then after having another play around with stuff came up with this and well... now its done!
cheers

Today I... need to come in here and breathe a sigh of frustration.

Coldplay are playing an intimate show (Enmore Theatre) next month and I missed out on presale tickets and general sale tickets today.

There are a lot of people complaining to the promoter and to ticketek. Whilst I am disappointed, I fully understood this was a luck of the draw type thing. Tickets sold out basically immediately. I pressed right on 10am and already sold out.

The maths helps to ease my pain. This is a band who can easily sell out multiple nights at 40k plus arenas. The Enmore Theatre has a capacity of 1600. Most people would buy in the maximum allotment of 2 tickets which means only 800 people got through.

*siiiiggghhhhhhh* would have been an amazing experience to see Coldplay in such an intimate venue.

Ahh well... Now I just wish they would hurry up and release their new album on Spotify.
