Last movie you saw

I just watched Dario Argento's Phenomena on DVD, absolutely brilliant! See avatar.

In the cinemas, I watched the original double feature cut of Grindhouse at the Astor in St. Kilda last week and it was heaps of fun. The audience were completely into it and by the sounds of cheers they liked Death Proof as much as Planet Terror - I hate that such a roller coaster ride of a film bombed in the States.

What's Phenomena about? and nice avatar.....

Are Death Proof and Planet Terror meant to be viewed together? I've heard the term grindhouse but prease exprain.

Ooh did you like him in Hollow Man, not that you could see him but he did a good job of being evil..

Hollow Man wasn't bad, but not really one of my favourites, much preferred Kevin in "Sleepers" now that was brilliant, disturbing at times but brilliant... also enjoyed "The River Wild" which also starred Meryl Streep and of course the one that got my attention initially good old "Footloose" (shows my age I guess!)

Watched a recent one with Sandra Bullock (and I never know if they will be any good or not) "Premonition" and was engrossed "28 days" is my other favourite Sandra movie, whereas I found alot of her other movies very disappointing.:(

The only Sandra Bullock movies i have are Speed, The Net, and 28 Days with the alcohol clinic.

Again i saw another kids movie ;)

Littlemoll and I saw Spiderwick Chronicles tonight. Really loved it. Another great children's movie.

Apart from possibly "Speed", you might say that her films tend to be bollocks, on the whole.

On the weekend, I saw "Before the Devil Knows you're Dead", with Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Excellent film, keeps you riveted. And if you think you're having a bad day, wait til you see Hoffman's character Andy. But be warned, it all becomes quite grim, and I felt I needed a drink at Cafe Sienna after the movie.

Managed to see all of Grindhouse for the first time, this week. I had seen Deathproof before, and I dislike it less now that I have seen it as it was supposed to be seen.
Grindhouse cinema was not really something I remember - apart from being too young, and being forced to watch all my B-Grade exploitation movies on VHS, it really wasn't part of the Australian culture. Drive-in was about as close as we ever got to grindhouse.
And the pseudo-retro thing nags at me a bit, as well. It is much more obviously pseudo when it starts with a go-go dancer that has no disco hot pants or platforms, and has a pole instead. It reminds me of those McDonald's ads that were ostensibly set in Australia, in the 1930's, to give kids who were born in the '70's the idea that McDonald's had been in Australia longer than they had. There is a lot of commercial convenience in this revision of the seventies -the type of exploitation of women portrayed in these movies is pure noughties, post spice girls, post Madonna type exploitation. It is not the Farrah Fawcett/ Pam Grier type of 'new woman' - but I guess if it was, it wouldn't be watchable.
Planet Terror comes much closer to the sophisticated send up of naive '70's B-Grade, (which were usually slashers) - it has the same kind of juvenile thrill to it. Seeing Death Proof after it, with the actors and sets from the previous movie, made Death Proof more watchable as well.
Still, it annoys me. It is hard to say exactly why, because they do what they do so slickly. Maybe it is that. The music grates on me especially. The Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mike & Titch song is like the C&W soundtrack to "Reservoir Dogs". Why does he choose the most lacklustre, crap and already overexposed songs? Didn't he get it the first time? Stop trying to make fetch happen! It isn't going to happen, Tarantino. The kids are not going to start singing crap pop songs that deserved to die when they did, just because you are such a cool producer.
I guess part of it is that you can see that it was a lot more fun for the people making it, it is full of hidden jokes and references that you would have to be part of the crew or cast to really appreciate. Which creates an impression like those low-level music awards ceremonies on MTV, where the host and the award winners keep on going on about what a great party they are going to have afterwards.
Anyway, as you can probably guess, I am not a Tarantino fan, even if he is a truly brilliant and original producer. Also, I did not see Kill Bill, and there seem to be references here (at least, there are references to Uma Thurman, and they are not all Pulp Fiction references.) Still, as this edition of Deathproof skipped all the lap dance and also the carpark outside the drugstore scene where we learn some of Stuntman Mikes and all of Lees backstory, I don't think it is essential to understanding the films. I might have to see a version that is Planet Terror all on it's own, to find out what happened between the jail sex scene and the scene where the Rib Shack blows, too.

There was a time back in the 80's when the Melbourne CBD was scattered with little cinemas showing B Grade movies. Low budget scifi and horror, like Ghoulies and Extro and Beastmaster. But along came VHS and killed them. They went porno for a while then died.

And before that, in the 70's there were quite a few Drive Ins about Melbourne. As a kid you'd hope dad would drive the car past one and you'd see a bare nork in a movie like The Story of O or Flesh Gordon.

Yeah, and while VHS killed nearly all the drive-ins and 90% of the local cinema houses, Australian cinema houses were mostly independent - the BCC complexes did not have the lions share of the market, and even in the '90's there were still heaps of independent places where you could watch a two-feature $5 film. (In fact, I think I saw my first two Tarantino films in one of these).
But Grindhouse comes out of a Hollywood production company monopoly on cinema and distribution, and on Hollywood's own strange, self regulated censorship code, which we in Australia still have not been wholly assimilated by, yet.

What a lot of words for someone with NOTHING to say. Why am I even interested in the bloated opinion of someone who hasn't even seen Kill Bill. Well, I'm not interested.

Last movie I saw was Hana Bi...great movie, I have a collection of Beat Takeshi movies on DVD

Here's the trailer for the bored who have a few minutes to kill

Do you have a copy of Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill?

I have looked online and can't find a copy to buy. Amazon have them via private sellers but the asking price is way too much.

Well, why not SAY something about why we should watch whatever this self-indulgent Hollywood movie mougl shits onto the screen, even when he is sending up movies like "Easy Rider" and "Psycho" , movies that people like him would never touch because their entire budget was less than his salary. It is not as if low budget independant films had a monopoly on exploitation and low production values, as Hostel II proves. (did love the Eli Roth moment in Planet Terror, though, I must admit)

That's good to hear...I was in Borders tonight and thought .."I wonder if there's a copy of Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill?'....yep, $29.95

Glad you found one as I was going to reprimand you for copyright infringement...after all you're supposed to be believing in the buying of creative stuff so that the artist gets their dues?

Oh no I'd bite my own hands off if I had succumbed to the temptations of burning movies. I always buy my movies, and yes do believe that when you download you rob people.

pity I have no idea what age group you are / or gender, etc. could be cool to talk movies or meet up in borders ha ha... talk books or stuff .

Someone mentioned kids movies earlier

The Tuxedo

The Medallion

Well I enjoyed both movies. They were silly, stupid fun movies. Plus they had Jackie Chan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Claire Forlani. What's not to like?

I enjoyed both of them 6/10

Have you noticed at the start of DVD's now they have that "what are you really burning?" warning but they specifically use Australian moves and words like you are ruining the Australian film industry.. I don't think they give a stuff about Americas lol

So I say don't burn Australian movies, just crappy American ones that should not be worth $30!
