Went into the movies today expecting to see Beowolf 3-D despite expecting to come out thinking it was only going to be a mildly enjoyable experience. Didn't even get that far, nope. Instead, I was somehow insanely lured into Bee Movie instead, despite being by myself. I had this inner compulsion to just go see it, though I'm a Pixar fan through and through, and will continue to shred on Dreamworks Animation films as long as it continues to churn out vomit inducing quality films. I also hate Jerry Seinfelds comedy, and I HATE his voice even more. I don't know what it was, but something made me walk into that movie theatre. Was it divine intervention? I don't know.
Now, I did enjoy the film. But it was only a GOOD movie for ME, just not GREAT. Jerry's voice was sooo grating to me throughout the movie, it really turned me off the main character; I just couldn't feel for him at all. But then again, there was a lot of voice acting in the film that rubbed me up the wrong way. What also got bad marks in my books was the production design. It looks great sometimes, and at others, it just makes the film unfocused. Any great animator will tell you that they've broken several animation school 101 rules with colour selection and character design in this movie, and it shows. All in all, it comes off bad, not good.
I could go on forever with some big no no, but don't get me wrong - I did enjoy the film, as I said, there were a couple of laugh out load moments and a great cover of The Beatles 'Here Comes the Sun' (which in turn prompted me to listen to the ever glorious original on my ipod as I left the cinema), but there was also a lot of cliched story elements, jokes, and acting. I give it 3/5. Only just worth my $10, but not a DVD purchase.
