Doctor Who

I have a confession to make. I am a Dr Who-a-holic and I believe this is the place to come for group therapy LOL.

Seriously, I've got it bad! It all started 6 months or so ago when I was flicking channels and the episode showing at the time was the one with Rose and the Dr standing in a London street looking around at everyone who had gone completely still, and they all had strange earpieces on. Later in the episode, people were marching in line to become robots of the future. At that point, I was hooked!

After that episode, I have made sure that if I'm not home on a Saturday, then the tape is in for watching at a later time. And if home after 1am, who cares? The tape goes in, hubby puts his earplugs in and I watch the damn thing in bed! :)

At the moment, I'm trying to get Series 1 and 2 box sets, but they're proving to be hard to get. I've tried ebay, but always seem to be outbidded. Maybe I just need to raise the stakes I guess.

Anyhow, am very much looking forward to watching tonight's episode as I believe it's meant to be a good one.

*sigh* Feeling so much better now I got that off my chest. :p

Thank you, glad to be part of the Dr Who family :) Gotta have some outlet for my addiction :p

You know, I remember the original series but was never interested in it. Mind you, I was probably 8 - 10 and early teens when it was re-run, however it just never really grabbed my interest. Now that I'm a die hard fan, I really want to see the original.

Speaking of which, my memory of the original series that I'm thinking of is the one with a late 40's Dr with grey hair . What's his name again? Which one is actually the original? Also, I read recently that the original Dr Who was a budget series that was made using absolute D-grade props etc. Makes me want to see it even more I think!

Edit: I couldn't think of the correct term for the robot episode that first sucked me in, but the above pic prompted my memory! The Cybermen! That would have to be one of the best episodes that I've seen so far. Just loved it.

I'm so obsessed with Doc & Torchwood, it's so seductive the new stuff, it's beyond whether you were a fan as a kid, the new stuff is just so yummy & good.
Anyway, I'm building up my dvd collection you just have to own Dr Who - so ezydvd is a good start they specialise in BBC stuff & have a sale at the moment.
Aqua if you haven't seen the old stuff, well I always loved that the story is the thing the special effects don't exist and all the aliens etc are crap, it's the reverse of US stuff. You know, how USA shows it's all about special effects and the story is crap? And I love with the Doctor how heaps of stuff they did due to low budgets have become absolute icons - like the Tardis (cheap spaceship idea), regeneration - fantastic idea to cover casting changes.
And I guess you know about the fantastic Dr Who & Torchwood fansites out there???????????

That would be Jon Pertwee Aqua, he was the first Dr i remember seeing also, my fave was Tom Baker (curly hair, long scarve ate jelly babies)

kxk you are correct about DW, the old series was not about the special effects it was about much more than that.

Aqua how are you liking series 3? Big episode tonight "blink" then the countdown till the end of the season.

Have you seen Torchwood yet? It's worth the watch also :)

Without doubt, I just HAVE to own the whole new series. And without a 2nd doubt, I now HAVE to watch all the original episodes. I'd like to see the 1st one ever. The one that defines the story today and how Dr Who came about. Sure, we read about the beginning... but I want to see it!

I watched the first episode of Torchwood funinonebabe, and although it had an addictive appeal, for some reason I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that one of our kids was sick with the flu and I didn't get to see the first episode fluently.

Is it worth another addiction do you think? :p

Oh, and I have to say that although completely still addictive, the third series just isn't as good as the 2nd. But who cares you know. It's all Dr Who, and you know, they could do an episode of flying pigs meets the Tardis and I'd STILL watch the ruddy thing! lol

^^Forgot to mention. I also remember Dr Who with the scarf! And that's the main "original" that I'd like to see.

How many "originals" were there again? :p

That's the charm of the original series....... I loved all the paper Maché
walls that moveed when the bad guys fell into them or the sets with
the same problems :D

Fun, fun, fun.... Its little things like that that sucked me into the series too
and that was back in the old episodes

BLINK was worth all the waiting and more than lived up to the hype. What a clever premise ....I will never look at a statue the same way EVER again :D

See Medusa, we can have a Doctor Who story without the Doctor. Now what was it you were saying about Love and Monsters again? :p
I couldn't resist.

ahem, anyway, just to help our new found fan Aquamarine out ... (I almost shed a tear, I feel like a parent watching their child discovering something new and amazing)

Doctor 1 - William Hartnell (though in later cross-re-generation stories he was played by another actor as Hartnell had passed away)
Doctor 2 - Patrick Troughton (also deceased)
Doctor 3 - Jon Pertwee (also made his name as Worzel Gummige. JP is also deceased)
Doctor 4 - Tom Baker (the one with the scarf, curly hair, and jelly babies and without a doubt, the most memorable)
Doctor 5 - Peter Davidson (also made his name on "All Creatures Great and Small")
Doctor 6 - Colin Baker (or as I like to think of him, "the big whoops")
Doctor 7 - Sylvester McCoy (was the last actor the play The Doctor before the original DW run ended after 30 odd years)
Doctor 8 - Paul McGann (one off appearance in the 1999 American co-produced tv movie)
Doctor 9 - Christopher Eccleston (relaunched DW for the 21st century, only stayed on for one season (didn't want to be "type cast") and has since gone on to guest star on Heroes who has the power of invisibility)
Doctor 10 - David Tennant (the current Doctor (set to enter his third year next year) and the one actor who has managed to shake the foundations of Tom Baker's claim to greatness)

Welcome to the Doctor Who family Aquamarine, it's hard not to become hooked by this show isn't it?

Doctor 4 - Tom Baker (the one with the scarf, curly hair, and jelly babies and without a doubt, the most memorable)
Tom Baker was my first Doctor Who, the one I grew up watching and my all time favourite.

Doctor 9 - Christopher Eccleston (relaunched DW for the 21st century, only stayed on for one season (didn't want to be "type cast") and has since gone on to guest star on Heroes who has the power of invisibility)
Was an absolutely amazing Doctor (although I'm biased as I was already an Eccleston fan), and probably the best casting choice to re-launch the series. I still hope we see him again, I know his tenure as The Doctor has now passed to Tennant, but I'd still love to see him again one more time, even if it's only as a flashback to show his regeneration from the 8th to 9th Doctor (or even better, a complete 'stand alone' episode to show the transition from 8th to 9th. I know it'll never happen, but I can always hope.)

Doctor 10 - David Tennant (the current Doctor (set to enter his third year next year) and the one actor who has managed to shake the foundations of Tom Baker's claim to greatness)
After Christopher Eccleston's departure, I was always going to be judgemental of whoever stepped into The Doctor's shoes (or Tardis, in this case), but David Tennant has had some shining moments as an actor during his time as The Doctor (most recently as John Smith not wanting to become The Doctor in 'Family of Blood')

I know what you mean about Tennant taking over.

I was blown away with Eccleston, he was up there with Tom Baker, not quite the same level as TB but definitely a close second so he had big shoes to fill.

Then seeing the christmas special with Tennant, I was convinced, the guy was going to be a damn good replacement.

And he's just gone from strength to strength since. And many pages back is a post from me where I came to a life changing* conclusion that Tennant had now surpassed Tom Baker
*By life changing I mean being nearly 31 years old and Doctor Who being one of your oldest memories and believing for as long as you can remember that Tom Baker was the greatest Doctor of all time and then a life time of beliefs changed.

OMFG (Oh My Freaking God)

That was a great episode. It started off kind of slow but really got
there towards the middle and end. Mr. Moffat you did another bloody
brilliant episode.

The most quoted speech in this thread LOL

"Don't Blink.
Blink and you're dead.
Don't turn your back.
Don't look away.
And don't Blink."

I loved the episode once it started to get its feet. I loved the
nice deception Sally's friend Kathy did to the poor young guy
back in the past, telling him she was only 18, come on... Don't
all you girls do that And what was it with her going all
goo goo the moment she sees the young cop? Like do people
do that at the drop of a hat? I just found that a bit of a nitpick.

OK since I'm gonna copy this bit above to my blog as well
because it's after midnight and I can't be ar**d to write
from scratch. More ramblings to follow

OK could have easily picked a few holes in the story, but that's
not what the show is about. It's about enjoying the stories....
But suffice to say I did notice one or two little itty bitty things that
could be considered nitpicks. Did you?

Also they borrowed from the "BTTF book of time travel things
to do" and especially with the letter Sally gets..

Loved the end bit with the flashes of more statues and the
Doctor's video with the aforementioned warning quote.

OH yeah and like the cop said at the start of the show indeed she
was hot. But I still prefer Donna Noble

Anyway

Sci-fi's Oscars have been announced today and "Best Dramatic Presentation - Short Form" (that means tv episode) goes to Mr Moffat and Mr Lyn for last year's "The Girl in the Fireplace". The full ranking was:

1. Doctor Who - “Girl in the Fireplace” (2006) Written by Steven Moffat. Directed by Euros Lyn [BBC Wales/BBC1]
2. Doctor Who - “Army of Ghosts” and “Doomsday” (2006) Written by Russell T. Davies. Directed by Graeme Harper [BBC Wales/BBC1]
3. Battlestar Galactica - “Downloaded” (2006) Written by Bradley Thompson & David Weddle. Directed by Jeff Woolnough [NBC Universal/British Sky Broadcasting]
4. Doctor Who - “School Reunion” (2006) Written by Toby Whithouse. Directed by James Hawes [BBC Wales/BBC1]
5. Stargate SG-1 - “200″ (2006) Written by Brad Wright & Robert C. Cooper & Joseph Mallozzi & Paul Mullie & Carl Binder & Martin Gero & Alan McCullough. Directed by Martin Wood. [Double Secret Productions/NBC Universal]

Moffat won the same accolade this time last year for "The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances". This also marks the second year running that Dr Who episodes (against every other sci-fi / fantasy show on tv) have garnered three nominations out of five in this category.

OMG "The Empty Child / Doctor Dances" was another spooky but fun story
and I loved that one too

"Are you my mommy?
Mommy, mommy"

Brrrr that was so spooky .....
