I finally got around to binge watching the first two AU seasons for the first time. All I can say is: wow. Did I hate them? Not really. Was I screaming at my TV and becoming unnecessarily angry while watching them? Absolutely.
I can totally forgive the lower production values and how “different” these seasons feel to what the show has become today. I think it’s important to remember that AU season 1 was the first English-speaking iteration of the show, so it makes sense that the precident of the franchise that we know today wasn’t set til the first UK season later. Roger is no Claudia nor Alan, but the tone of this version he suited it and imo improved by the end of season 2. However, I am fully expecting the production of AU season 3 to align with the current UK/US style and be very similarly produced, including the theatrics of the host (which looks to be the case, from Ten’s early Upfronts preview). So if it’s not then that’ll be a huge misstep by the team imo, especially considering how successful the overseas versions currently are.
Season 1 was an interesting watch. Between Kate, Marielle and Sandra I think they were some of the strongest players I’ve seen. Was thoroughly entertained by Teresa, while Craig’s genuine shock and emotion at the end was kinda upsetting to watch. Though I don’t blame Alex - she played a fantastic game and did what she had to do.
Season 2… I can’t even begin to describe my feelings while watching this one. No wonder it’s considered the worst/most frustrating season of The Traitors ever. I was literally screaming aloud during every single Banishment for how fucking DUMB these players were. All of them. I couldn’t believe how twisted every episode became. It was infuriating but somehow, by the halfway point, that’s actually what made it so compelling to keep watching. Extremely satisfying ending though… I loathed Sam. Honestly, he and literally everyone else who was cast (aside from maybe Abigail and Luke) were just so beyond bad at this game. I can’t believe how stupid they were. Also, who knows why Sarah was cast in the first place - the most idiotic reality TV contestant I think I’ve ever seen.
Nonetheless, glad to have caught up. I’ve now almost made my way through every English-speaking series.
Gosh I love this show, and I’m now even more excited for the revamped AU version.
