Big Brother Australia 2022 - Back To The Future - Pre-season build up

As a former video editor, this is definitely the case.

Interestingly, today’s promo of David has used (what looks to me like) the master footage. Great. But it still begs the question why they couldn’t source 2003’s.
It looks like the YouTube quality to me. The 2002/2003 series are just in very poor quality on YouTube. Unless TV quality was just that poor in 2006 ? lmao

Hmm, looking at it again I can see that.

Yes, the 2003 season is unfortunately the poorest quality, lowest resolution rip of all the BBAU seasons (minus CBB).

I also remember Mike Goldman plugging that Potbelleez song 'Don't Hold Back' on Uplate during 2006 or 07 and IIRC it was quite a bit before it really took off (and later became used in those car ads and such).

Really? Is there a better quality version of 2002 somewhere? On YouTube the 2002 quality was HORRIBLE compared to what I watched of 2003. I almost gave up on 2002 because of how poor it was.

There is! Only slightly, but close to on par with the 2001 rips.

Judging by the majority of comments on social media on the latest ”rewind” promos, if anything this season’s concept could actually backfire on Seven with an influx of renewed interest in the old format and people shunning the new one with the contrast now more side-by-side than ever before.

This has always been the major reason why I’m interested in watching the series. So many people I knew who used to big brother have told me they’ll watch this year. And what will come from it? Discussion of the old format. Even if the channel 7 version is soon to be axed, it’s brought back (and will bring more back soon) of the original popularity the show had. If there’s any chance of the show in some way some where going back to it’s roots, it will only increase after this.

Especially if BBUK does return with the original format next year, and is successful.

I think the biggest problem for a live series of Big Brother in Australia is how the TV week now seems to just be Sunday to Wednesday. Seven could probably switch it to Sundays to Thursdays by axing the second Thursday episode of Home and Away for a couple of months, which they'd probably get away with - but then assuming Sunday evictions they would need a seperate daily show and eviction show IMO - or perhaps a Late Night Feast style show filmed on the Thursdays and airing later on the Friday night.

I think the crucial thing though is when the TV show is off air for 3-4 days that shouldn't mean the show stops - and that is where live feeds can plug the gap. It really is what makes all the difference with BBUSA and BB Canada - and does so much work to counteract any issues with the main broadcast shows. It isn't about people having the time to watch them live 24/7 too but little snippets of information dropping into viewers timelines from those who are watching. They do far more to promote the show than any packaged promo ever can.

Ah. But you say that like the return of the original format wouldn’t be by Ten…;)

If only, and I think Ten is the only network who could schedule Sunday to Friday. I'm not completely convinced they would though.
Realistically it probably will never happen and Big Brother is most likely dead the moment it leaves 7. But then again, those who have said BB would never come back have been wrong twice before. If the UK revival comes to action then there does exist more reason to keep BBAU running down here. Ten however are reaching a point sooner or later where they're going to need to replace the bachelor. That franchise has no chance at picking up viewers and has probably reached its use by date. Eventually there will be room in the schedule, they'll need something big in future. Australian Survivor and Masterchef can only do so much for them, so who really knows?

Love Island kinda made the Sun-Tues schedule work and was kinda “live”, wasn’t it? My pipe dream would be for the cancelled BBVIP slot to be replaced by the classic format so that it can at least coexist with the regular series, because I sincerely doubt they’re going to let go of the format anytime soon.

Regardless, any extra content to fill out the week would probably be stuck to side shows. There’s no way live feeds get brought back, especially with 7’s desire to remain family friendly. MAFS has shown that social media furore is still ridiculous, BBCAN/BBUS twitter seems to get more toxic by the year, and the feeds there feel like they’re cutting more and more often just to avoid any hint of controversy.

Hypothetically, if Big Brother does get dropped, I think a revival on 10 would depend on if The Challenge becomes their next big thing, since it seems to have taken Survivor’s previous late year slot a lot of boxes for them:
  • Pseudocelebrity cast of old reality stars, bringing in a number of fanbases for viewership
  • Subsidised by CBS/Paramount
  • Branding as ”prestige”-y challenge based content a la Survivor rather than typical “shlocky reality fare”, especially given the promos for the CBS version labelling itself as America’s next sport

I don't think bb will be getting dropped just yet.. my friend who worked on set for the season that is about to air has just been tapped on the shoulder again to work on bb for another season in a few months time (she's in the art department - props, house design)

I'm assuming after the Easter Show is over they'll finalise the house design and get to work on freshening it up!

I wonder then if there's something in the works for Q4 this year then? Ideally I'd like more celebration of BB's 21st birthday in order to keep me interested. The last thing I want is an all stars consisting of people like Keiran and Danny.

BB is probably here to stay on Ch7 for a while then.

Woah what is this? I’d never heard of it … just googled it and it has 37 season in the US wow.

Was surprised it got renewed this year TBH.

Sun-Wed could possibly work with the US format with the live evictions on Wednesday, but then you've house action taking place on the Thursday which doesn't air till the Sunday.

Potentially though have:

Sun - Shopping Task, Nominations (filmed Thu/Fri)
Mon - Noms fall out, Veto Challenge (filmed Fri/Sat)
Tue - A Luxury (KFC) Challenge, Veto Meeting (filmed Sun/Mon)
Wed - Live Eviction and Live HoH Challenge (inc some highlights from Mon/Tue).

Not ideal but as both the US and Canada can have all the weeks format points filmed (and their outcomes revealed on the live feeds) before the first episode goes out it's not too different really. Only thing is the eviction on the Wednesday doesn't feel very BBAU, but it is the only way to make that format work.

However tweaking the Seven format and keeping twice weekly evictions you could have shows Sun/Mon and Wed/Thu with the nominations challenge and nominations in the first (recorded) and then the second show be live, with perhaps highlights of a shopping task then the eviction, where I'd have viewers save one of the three nominees and then the housemates vote for the evictee. I'm just not completely convinced any Aussie network would risk breaking up the week like that though, even though it is better for the show.
