Audience laughing at sam because of his mobility issue/disability

His disability and the stairs are being discussed in this thread. That's why I'm talking about it. I rarely post about any housemates, Sam included. I post about things that interest me, like disability access.

Sharing a razor or toothbrush is not the same as sharing a drink from a bottle. It's a WHS issue just like disability access is. (And yes infection control - or lack thereof - is a pet peeve of mine )

Hello I am a 21-year-old with a disability who is confined to a wheelchair. I have all my limbs however I do not have the strength to weight-bear through my legs and therefore walk.

I thought it was extremely rude for the audience (or members of) to laugh at Sam walking up the stairs. It is obvious to me (watching him over 3 weeks) that traversing those stairs is much bigger challenge than someone who is able-bodied (although those stairs would be impassable for me). If he made a joke about it at that time then it may be appropriate to laugh at the joke, but he did not.

I also raise the question of whether the house came first or the housemate. If they knew that someone with a disability (amputated/missing leg) was likely to enter the house I hope he was consulted about his access needs (e.g. Can you climb an average flight of stairs?).

I am actually wondering if the Power Room was designated as a "back up" diary room. It kind of has that diary room shape to it. I'm talking generally e.g. of a housemate injures themselves and is on crutches ... or anything. With some cloud panels brought in for the walls and a lighting change it could probably work.

Sam would not have been in the BB house if he could not handle access to all areas. Anyone can stumble on stairs, disabled or fully abled, and may be laughed at. This is a storm in a teacup, Sam has one leg, Skye appears mentally limited at times, Lisa has chest problems..

When I first heard the laughs coming from the audience it really hit a nerve with me, and judging by the comments I'm reading, I'm not alone. I'm not a very PC person, what I find funny would probably be highly offensive to others & sometimes I wonder 'where exactly is the line?' (for example are jokes involving race, religion etc ok?)...well last night I found my line. This is a man with 5 Paralympic medals (2x Gold, 2x Silver & 1x Bronze), an Order of Australia (OAM), a man who has been challenged & overcome so much adversity in his life. For the audience to laugh at him "stumbling" up the stairs is an absolute disgrace!

It probably shouldn't come as a shock considering the appearance of the crowd when the camera pans to them. It honestly appears as though most of the audience have some sort of mental disability. I won't comment any further on this as it's not my place nor will it achieve anything?

My disgust however is not only aimed at those in the audience who laughed but the BB producers who allowed the audio of the crowd laughing to go to air. BB is billed as a "LIVE" show however there clearly is a delay, this was evident when BB was announcing the HM's up for eviction, when he said "Lisa" she clearly swore however the BB producers cut that audio out & replaced it with 1-2secs of silence as well as pixelated her mouth (to prevent us from lip-reading her saying "f*ck"). So if the BB producers are capable of cutting out Lisa's profanity as well as pixelate a HM's mouth, why did they let the audio of the audience laughing at Sam go to air? I'm more offended at people laughing at a person with a disability than I am at hearing the word "f*ck".

That's my say! I've been sitting on this all day ummm'ing & aaagghhh'ing if I should say anything. I couldn't sit idle any further.

Yes the live delay is about 7 seconds I think and I am still convinced they weren't laughing about what was on screen, so no need to press the silence button.

Yes it is very rude because the producers at back stage are making the audience to CLAP and giggle. And im not suprise about that. That is like if i was to walk upstairs very angry with one eye. Would you giggle me and wonder what i might do next ? No you won't and giggle someone with one leg is rude. After all the producers are as bad as a kid knowdays.. they oddly choose one gay person whos so femin. And one with a disable leg and one tall unfuncional lady who was born like that. The producers are using odd people to make it all like it was a circus... just like the 1920s when they choose odd people with 3 legs and one with one eye or a monkey with a no tail. Well thats how they are using for big brother and they focus too much on odd people. Why not have the original big brother show rather then a gay person and this and that. Its not a circus show you foolish

Most disability people who are on the pension do not preciate been called or classified themselfs as (disability) because most of them people preffer to feel normal like any ordinary person. So calling that housemate disabillity is not a propeiate manner.. His not retarded nor his on a wheelchair. Hes a smart men who knows what he is doing and his sorroundings... I would not classified him as a disability just because he has one leg... If i had one leg or one eye i would never wish to classified myself as a disability. I rather feel original as normal as posible without the extra eye perhaps. You get what i meant. And did sonia giggle as well ? and by the way how on earth would they make big brother show so late ? just to show off that sonia is half way pregnant ? bad idea.

Dear John,
Sam IS a disabled athlete. He does indeed have a disability. However that is something that HE deals with, not something others need to deal with.
In your first post, do you really think the 'producers backstage' could signal to the audience to laugh & they reacted so quickly?? Some people here didn't even notice the whole thing on the first watch, so we can forget the idea that anyone on the production crew encouraged the laughter.
You also refer to Gemma, Sam & Jason as "odd" and liken them to a circus act???!!!
Get real for heaven's sake; look around society today. There ARE people who are extremely tall, there ARE disabled people, there ARE gay people all around us every bloody day so why you can come on here & have the nerve to call any of these people "part of a circus act" is so much against what you started out saying that I can only assume you have no bloody idea what you're saying.

We all have our differences, how does that make anyone more "normal' than anyone else?

With all due respect. I understand he has a disability because he has one leg. But please do not classified him as words for (disability) because he is not retarted. nor hes on a wheelchair and he was never born with out a brain. If the person was to be that bad then you could say classified that person as a disabillity. I believe many people who are on the pension and what not does not like the words for been called classified them as disabillity. For me disabillity is more like a person who does not think well and can't communicate... This fellow housemate with one leg is nothing classified as disabillity. He is as normal as what everyone is original state. Not classified stamp him as one of the (disable people) thats just an offence... Hes not brain dead. Hes normal and he knows that.

For me to classified a disable person is someone who cant think normal and cant; communicate normal. The fellow housemates can think and knows what he is on about like a normal person. Classified him as a disabillity is almost like calling him a retarted upnormal person. And that is not good. And for the discusting child who was giggling for him walking up the stairs like a pirate guy was offensive. I wonder what type of parenting they may be... the alcoholic type family perhaps.

Dude, being disabled doesn't have ANYTHING to do with mental capacity. He is simply PHYSICALLY disabled.
There is nothing wrong with his 'brain' and that is what I have been saying all along.

Oh gawd I need a head against the brick wall emoticon!
*walking away now*

If i was to be on a chair or one leg or one eye.. I would so much angry hate to be classified as a disability because calling someone disabillity for me that is like calling them a retarded. How about you as a normal person to be classified as a maggot. Sorry but im not a very one tonight... yet along might aswell have a drink.

You clasified him well and truely a disability. Why not forcus him as a normal person without calling him he has a disability. Do you focus on the person body figuire or do you focus more on what the fellow housemate is talking about ? 2 things are diferent.

OH? So you have been classified?
It all makes sense now ........
Why classified him disability ? do you just focus on his looks just because he has a one leg or do you focus more on what he comes out from his mouth ? I rather listern and see him face to face and not fucus anything the rest of his body.. his not a animal.
