Last movie you saw

Looks awesome, love Gilliam doing his thing, looks like this is him unabated.

Okay. I have a confession. Forgive me father for I have sinned.
I went and saw GI Joe.

And a fair chunk of it I really enjoyed, actually. The trashing of Paris in the middle is totally implausible (yeah like the rest of the movie is a documentary) but... fun.

But of course the acting and the plot the dialogue and the stupid clichéd relationships are ghastly bad. Probably because the back-story was created by an advertising exec for a kids cartoon designed to sell toys.

And the end is classic over the top "Throw a huge CGI budget at the screen", overkill, which might have been more exciting if you cared about the terrible characters. Think the climax of "Return of the Jedi", but under water, and no Ewoks.

I don't know about Kate being beautiful, for as a character she is quite creepy, but Sophie Lowe who plays her certainly isn't hard to look at. She's like Botticelli's Venus come to life, and I'd love to see her in Road Train, which is doing the festival rounds.

Beautiful Kate the film on the other hand is utterly depressing. Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown may lead such charmed lives they can afford to wallow in such bleakness, but not me. Technically the film is sound, but what does that matter when you leave the theatre suicidal?

I don't recommend this film at all. Not even to those who might like to admire the beauty of Sophie Lowe.

No need to be ashamed, I plan to see it, but it's actually been getting a lot of good word for being a really entertaining film.

Isn't Christopher Eccleston in this?

I really want to see this but I don't like bleak.... don't do bleak..but I don't mind seeing a bit of misery :) and I love Aussie movies, I can't get enough of them. Your post has made me even more curious but I'm worried now it's depressive :o

The following isn't really a spoiler, but some people like to know zero about films they see. So to give you some idea about the story:

The film is basically about a prodigal son like figure (Ben Mendelsohn) returning to his outback home to visit his dying father (Bryan Brown). Throughout the film the son deals with guilt over an incestous encounter he had with his now deceased sister Kate (Sophie Lowe), and the hatred he feels for his once domineering but now powerless father.

I don't mind bleakness and misery if there are characters I can empathise with. For instance, Disgrace, which I saw last week, is heavy going with no clear resolution, but the inclusion of sympathetic characters you care about makes all the difference.

The only character like that in Beautiful Kate is the long suffering and saintly youngest daughter played by Rachel Griffiths, but she is absent for most of the film.

Tonight I'm watching a movie called Der Untergang which is about the downfall of Hitler. Apparently it's amazing and really depressing. Should be a fun filled night.

that's "Downfall" yeah??

I've got the dvd, it's on my meaning to watch list, still haven't got around to it. Meant to be really good.

I found Downfall to be superb, absorbing, though very grim cinema. I'm confident a fellow Kubrick fan will be gripped by the experience, though Jase didn't like The Devil Wears Prada, so I might be wrong.

Would you expect most Kubrick fans to like The Devil Wears Prada though?

I didn't get a chance to watch the film last night but I will today or tomorrow. If it's an intense experience, I'm sure I'll like it. I love to just be completely absorbed by a film and based on what I've read, this will fit the bill.

I'm sure her performance was great but I just can't stand her or her films for some reason. I didn't like Doubt either, or Mamma Mia or whatever else she's been in. Not sure why.
