Well, I've seen WALL-E twice now, and I don't care what the hell other people think. It uses unconventional dialogue, yes. It is a process of discovery, yes. It is beautiful to look at and is finely crafted in some of the most technical and unique dramaturgy and animation, yes. But what is it really? To me, it's a film about two things; feeling and identity. It's about us observing what these characters are feeling. About our lack of feeling. How we come to feel, and what we feel about what we are seeing around us. A beautiful film that shines like a ray of light for those first 30 minutes or so. After that, it is something almost complete different; but by the end it comes together nicely to teach us more about ourselves than we could have imagined. Perhaps it's not a film for the everyday person as first thought, but if you want to see something there in the pile of emotive, robotic junk that comes to be more caring for our planet than we can ever be... it will be.
