Words/things I learned watching BBAU from the US

I was watching BBAU 2012 & learned lemonade there is a lemon-lime soda & lemon juice is what we call lemonade.

What?

None of that makes sense.

Aussie lemonade = carbonated, sugary drink, clear with no real strong taste of anything. There is no lemon & lime in our lemonade.

Your lemonade - that stuff your kids seem to make and sell, yes that is just lemon juice/sugar/water right?
That would be like our lemon cordial drinks.

Do you have cordial drinks? Flavoured syrups, some fruit juice based, you add to water or soda for fizz.
Cordial is quite a popular standard here.

Then there are squashes. Lemon squash, is the lemon flavoured soft drink.

Lemonade is very sweet. The lemon squash is also called club soda.

Favourite Aussie movies, I have many, but what I can think of right now that haven't been mentioned.
Two Hands
Dogs In Space
Don's Party
Angel Baby
Sirens
The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith
Proof
Fat Pizza
The Delinquents
My Brilliant Career
Storm Boy
Razorback
Turkey Shoot
Monkey Grip
Chopper
They're a weird mob
Somersault
Black Sheep (NZ)
Spotswood
The Nugget
Evil Angels
Alvin Purple
Playing Beatie Bow
The Coca Cola Kid
Head On
Moulin Rouge (Did someone say this?)
Romeo and Juliet (Baz)

I was around in the Melbourne "Dogs In Space" scene - pretty accurate depiction of a mad time!

You failed to mention -

"Bliss" - an exceptional film made in the late 80's from a Peter Carey nove

"Bad Boy Bubby" an wholly original work of Art

"Idiot Box" hilarious Heist movie with a very Australian flavour and brilliant soundtrack (Aussie Pub/Alternative bands) made late 90's

"UnDead" - Hilarious Zombie flick - a spoof of the genre made around the time of Sean of the Dead - very original concept, impressive effects...made by Brisbane Spierig Brothers, who went on to make "Daybreakers"

"Priscilla-Queen of the Desert"
"Breaker Morant"
"The Castle"
"Mad Max"
"Gettin' Square"
"Wolf Creek"
"He Died with a Felafel in his Hand"

For the people saying I may have forgotten some movies in my list, you might want to reread my post. It is a list of MY favourite Aussie movies, and only the ones I could think of at the time. I'm certainly not going to recommend any movies I haven't watched. Also a few of the movies listed to be "missing" from my list, have already been mentioned in this thread ;)

Good list. But you forgot-

Reckless Kelly
Chopper
Crocodile Dundee

Chopper is in Meow's list

The other two SHOULD be forgotten! Especially that horrible Yahoo Serious thing!

Heath Ledger in "Ned Kelly" (2003) is much better than Yahoo Serious in "Reckless Kelly"

No, pub soda is lemon squash. club soda is American for soda water.
And as I said Aussie lemonade has no lemon, it's just sugar and bubbles.

I LOVED Cosi - but it seems few people have seen it :(

What about Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla and Bad Boy Bubby?

Cosi is great!
I love Barry Otto - outstanding actor! He is also in

"Bliss" - An exceptional piece of story-telling way ahead of its time on environmental/big business issues (1986 I think)

The other three you have listed are all excellent too - love Bad Boy Bubby!

Just wanted to join in

Sapphires is the last Aussie film I saw & bought the DVD, it's a great little warm movie, with fabulous music.

There are some shockers in that list above - Delinquents with Kylie is awful, and OMG don't look at Alvin Purple dreadful.

Has anyone mentioned in TV, The Slap? has won awards very well done & recent.
Mother & Son is an amazing old TV show, with 2 iconic actors. It's about dementia, and absolutely hilarious - and sweet.
Phoenix is a nailbitingly frightening cops/criminals show that terrified me.

Posters, how would you describe something like those old Aunty Jack shows? We have some odd stuff.
I think Aussies like the Brits love eccentrics.

Oh, Cloud Street, by Tim Winton, is a very special book, and now a mini series that I haven't seen yet

The best Australian movie is Picnic at Hanging Rock followed by Walkabout.

I think in the US their equivalent is in powder form, but the end result is similar to Australian cordial. They tend to call it Kool-Aid (a genericised trademark). I figured this out after countless TV programs and books spoke of the Reverend Jim Jones using "Kool-Aid" and I googled it to figure out what it was. (The true brand name Jones used has been disputed and often named as being Flavor-Aid.)

Same with our lemon-lime soda. It has no lemons or limes, doesn't really taste like it either, just sugar and soda water. Sprite, 7-up, & Sierra Mist are examples. Not sure why it's called lemon-lime soda to be honest. I heard yours is still mildly different from those, though.

I think we have cordials, if it's flavored syrups and soda water, though not as common, and we call it Italian soda (or French soda if you also add cream). Your cordials also kind of sounds like juice concentrates. I have heard alcoholic beverages called cordials here before as well.

Kool aid is a sugary powder you add water to that tastes like watered down juice or fruits punch. The phrase "drinking the Kool-aid" in reference to people mindlessly going along with things originated from that incident. Sad stuff.

We have powdered shit like that too, not very popular. Orangey tang and stuff, ick.

Saline is another weird drink, that is a bit different, put a spoonful in and it fizzes for a minute, like antacid sort of. We loved to drink it fizzing as kids, tastes like a flat lemoney drink when it stops fizzing. Spoonfuls in your mouth, bubbling yum

Cottees cordials are one of the things I get cravings for when away from Australia. The ones in Britain aren't sugary enough, to my taste, and nothing is just so perfectly artificial as red cordial. Like a liquid red frog.

Great coming of age movie is The Year My Voice Broke.

Gallipoli is my favorite anti- war movie. Always makes me weep.

Also remember Breaker Morant and My brilliant career as great movies.

Any more recent movies from the past ten years you would recommend?

In the US, you can't compare lemonade to that Kool Aid crap that kids drink. Real lemonade is made with real lemons, sugar, and plain water. No fizz. Kool Aid is very old...I drank it in the 50's. I can't imagine any adults I know buying it now, even for kids. It's junk...all sugar. You don't find it anywhere except the home. It would never be served in a restaurant. Now there are powders like Crystal Light with a little more sophisticated fruit flavor and no sugar - Splenda only. They are for home use too. One convenient thing Crystal Light makes are individual little slim packets just enough to turn a bottle of water into a flavored drink. Just pour it in, shake it up, and you have a drink.

A new small appliance that came out last year turns flavored syrups and tap water into fizzy drinks. Seems like you could just pour in 7-Up, Sprite, Ginger Ale, or Club Soda instead of buying an appliance. They also have a cola flavored syrup so you can make your own Coca Cola.

Do you have root beer or Dr. Pepper soft drinks in Australia?

A cordial here is an adult beverage with alcohol. You serve it in small glasses and it's a sipping drink. It's usually a strong fruit flavor like cherry.
