Big Brother winner Tim Dormer was called a girl and Goldilocks at school
AS a school kid, Tim Dormer’s long blond locks, strong commitment to his studies and limited sporting prowess made him an easy target for bullies.
He was asked: Is that Goldilocks?, Do you perm your hair? Are you a girl?”
Such questions were among taunts the teen would face daily from cowardly bullies. But instead of letting insults get to him, he embraced his differences and turned the taunts around to beat the bullies.
Today, the Big Brother winner prides himself on being a “crazy misfit” and says he wouldn’t be himself if he succumbed to his bullies’ teasing.
“I’m proud that early on I didn’t let it get to me. I decided I was not going to let what other people thought of me determine what I thought about myself,” he said.
“You don’t have to fit in to belong and I now believe that diversity is one of the best gifts you can have.”
An ambassador for the National Day of Action Against Bullying, Tim wants to spread the word that those differences that make some kids easy targets for bullying are nothing to be ashamed of.
“As an adult, especially in business and trying to be successful, it’s great to be different and stand out from the pack,” he said.
Tim overcame being victimised as a school kid, but since becoming a public figure he has endured online trolling.
“You can’t listen to it, it’s so negative,” he said.
“I pity people who are unhappy in their own lives that they get some sort of joy out of taunting other people.”
But no matter where the nasty words or actions come from, whether it is online or in the schoolyard, and targeting adults or children, Tim has a simple and effective message for victims of bullying.........
