I am biassed against intellectualism. As a programmer, I spent a career doing things not in the intellectual way, but in the money making for shareholders justifies all sins and shortcuts way. I'm probably at the other end of the spectrum of intellectualism. I only really care about small smart things, such as efficient bitcounting. Any public discussion of it other than privately actually improving it is a bit pointless. I consider MIT HAKMEM to be a work of genius, but people interested would more likely be profiling implementations and shooting for the glory of bettering it rather than talking about it. My thoughts about intelligence are heavily affected by Stephen Hawking not being able to help himself medically in the slightest and not having the mechatronic ability to improve his situation. I am really disappointed that someone who purports to understand the universe uses an off the shelf wheelchair. I was also terribly disappointed to read some of Terry Tao's (world's top ten superbrains, maybe) programming. He's a maths genius but his programming is embarrassing and he gets interns to help him.

My view of admirable intellectualism is the history of the fast inverse squareroot, often attributed to Carmack. So many humble people and none of them blowing their own trumpet.

Thanks - You made more sense to me than that article did!

Efficiency and effectiveness are the main purpose of the work I try to do. It amazes me how overly complicated process can be come when they don't need to be.

That is a really thought-provoking comment about Hawking - I had never really thought about it like that before. I have to mull it over rather before I could say whether I agree or not. (I will get back to you on that one!)

Terry Tao reminds me of my thoughts on many CEO's - where it's actually their executive assistant's that actually are the people making things happen at the top, with many executives sill unable to even use email!
