Three times does sound like a lot. I could never do that whole permission thing if i was ever in a position to do such a thing.

I know some people like that sort of tradition but my thoughts are it's up to the woman if she has found the man she wants to marry, not up to her dad. So mostly I guess it's just formality.

That's true about the fact that it is up to the woman.

47- MIDSOMER MURDERS
I like murder mysteries. But I actually like the mystery part more than I like the murder part. Not a huge fan of murder to be honest with you. Seems a bit pointless to me. Anyway, with the mystery part I like the guessing of the killer, seeing all the suspects and their various motivations, and the atmosphere before the murder actually takes place. In this upcoming list there will be a lot of murder mysteries and this is the first one of them. Midsomer Murders is 90 percent good and ten percent trash. The 90 percent is the set up of the murder, plus the motivations of all the suspects. The ten percent is at the end where we find out that the murderer was actually the local vicar we saw for ten seconds at the start of the show.

A typical episode finish seems to always go like this:

Detective: Hmmmm, there are traces of blood around this handle.....which means it can only have come from that sweet old lady Mrs Smith who is obviously a cold blooded murder due to a long and boring explanation which makes no sense whatsoever.

Other detective: And you got all this from a blood soaked handle?

Detective: No, from a lazy scriptwriter.

46-DIAGNOSIS MURDER
I don't usually like hospital based tv shows, however Diagnosis Murder is an exception. For some reason I really have no interest in medical shows. They just don't grab me. But Diagnosis Murder is different because the mystery is much more important than any medical stuff they do on that show. The trying to find the murderer and all that. Of course the fact that there are these doctors who solve the murders mean that classic tv trope of the dumb police officer is put into full affect here. Now I personally enjoy this type of thing but I can see why others may not. Because it often goes like this:

Dumb police person: Well looks like that case is finished. I have just charged Mrs Walterford with the murder of her husband even though the clues that point to her guilt are obviously fabricated. Now it is time to hit the golf course.

Amateur sleuth who has somehow gotten access to the case: Well you are wrong detective and i intend to show you that by pointing out logical inconsistencies in your case. You will of course listen to me because as you well know that as the star of this middling network show that I am always right.

Yeah, pretty annoying. But I still like it.

45- THE LATE SHOW (AUSTRALIAN TV SERIES)
Australian tv comedy. From The Paul Hogan Show to Parliament Question Time this country has a rich and varied history in making people laugh. One of the tv shows that I enjoyed was 'The Late Show'. Now I was too young to watch it when it first came out. But that dvd they put out helped to put it in my top 50 tv shows of all time. Sketches such as shitscared, shirty: the slightly aggressive bear and charlie the wonderdog were hilarious. It is a pity that they only made two series. But I guess that they probably didn't want to overstay their welcome which is admirable in its own way. They left while they were still out on a creative high.

Also the commentry on the dvd is pretty good too. I am not really a fan of commentaries because it is just sickening back slapping or just a series of obvious statements such as 'in this scene the character is angry because he is yelling about how angry he is' or 'the sandwhich that she is eating represents her hunger'. But the commentry for this dvd was very engaging and funny.

44- THE SIMPSONS
Ten years ago this show would have in my top 25. Twenty years ago, if I had a computer and a greater understanding of the english language to formulate more complex sentences, it would have been in my top 5 tv shows. The Simpsons used to be great with not only their clever humor and fleshed out characters, but also the way the show had heart. It always used to make you feel. I mean who could forget "You are Lisa Simpson" in 'Lisa's Substitute'. Or Homer sitting on his car after saying goodbye to his mother yet again. But now the show is filled with predictable gags and celebrity cameo appearances.

I hope that one day the show gets back to what had made it funny in the first place. That they stop with the awful humor of the past few series that has tarnushed it's legacy and ground it into the dust. But I honestly have no faith that it will be good again in the future. It will just become more of a joke the longer it goes on. The first few seasons of The Simpsons is the only reason it is still in my top 50. Anither ten years and it will probably not even be it again.

43- THE CHASER'S WAR ON EVERYTHING
Another great comedy sketch show that I really enjoyed was 'The Chaser's War on Everything'. This show often had great political based comedy which skewered both sides of politics. Everyone was fair game to the Chaser boys. They did have some controversy with the 'make a realistic wish foundation' sketch (which i found hilarious), plus their continual run ins with security got a bit tedious after a while. But when they were good they were really good.

One of their best segments was the 'what have we learned from current affairs this week?' where they would make fun of A Current Affair and Today Tonight for their lazy journalism. This appealed to me because those shows are the bane of tv in my view. All they do is help make this country more close-minded in their actions and beliefs. Having the Chaser team make fun of them and showcase what a bunch of hack they were put a smile on my face.

42- WOULD I LIE TO YOU?
Comedy game show panels seem to be a real industry over in Britain. They seem to be a relatively cheap and easy way to filll half an hour or so. Plus they are oftentimes hilarious. There are just too many to mention, and plenty I have not seen. One comedy panel show that i did enjoy watching was 'Would I lie to you?'. It is often very amusing to watch these comedians try and keep a straight face while they tell the most outlandish stories.

I would be awful at the game because not only am I not a comedian or famous but also because I am a terrible liar. The absolute worst. That doesn't mean I can't lie, it just means I am not very good at it. By lie I mean when you might ask me a question and I might tell a lie, but the lie will be so awful and I will look so sneaky that you will be compelled to ask another question. By that time I know I have no way out of the web that I have tangled for myself. The best liars are the ones who believe their own lies.

40- PERRY MASON
This is a show that I have only recently watched, but I have become so enamoured with 'Perry Mason' that it had just had to be in my top 50 tv shows ever. Perry, Della, and Paul make a formidable legal team who are always looking out for their clients. Now, this show is set in black and white. Which may turn some people off. I know when I was younger I thought that back before color tv people used to live in black and white. But we often have strange beliefs when we are growing up.

Anway, 'Perry Mason' is a top notch tv show with some great mysteries. We know that Perry's clients are innocent so the thrill is watching Perry through sheer logic and intelligence expose the real killer. I know if I ever got falsely accused of murder i would want Perry to defend me. Not that I would ever be in a position like that because then I would actually have to meet people. But still it is nice to know that a fictional lawyer would be able to help me out of a far-fetched hypothetical scenario. Really lifts your faith in the human race it does.

39- THE GRUEN TRANSFER
I hate ads. I just hate them, and I don't think I am alone in my hatred for them. They are loud, annoying, and very unfunny. There is nothing I like about ads. They burn a hatred in my soul, a fire that burns inside me day and night. The flames flicker my emotions, they burn my soul. Whenever I see an ad anywhere I automatically clench my fist because I know that my soul will be in eternal torment once again watching a silly and useless advertisement about whatever. The horrible jingle will start to come on, that awful piercing jingle that sends a thousand daggers through my heart. I reach for the mute button, or I leave the room. Leave to get away from the torment that ad is putting me through. My soul is on fire. It is consumed by the flames of damnation. I beg for mercy as the vicious red lips of the fire starts to consume me. It grows inside of me until I am nothing. It controls me, it controls my every thought, my every feeling, every being. I am no longer me, I am the flame that burns my soul. But my soul is no more and I am nothing. I am just a nobody. I drift in and out. Lost and alone.

Which makes 'The Gruen Transfer' such a great show in that even though it touches on a subject that i vehemently hate with all my soul it still manages to be both entertaining and informative. Watching the show not only have i laughed quite heartily at their quips but I have also been educated and informed of the various tricks and trades used by advertisers to help sell the products. This is a sign of a great show and I hope that 'The Gruen Transfer' will continue to both entertain and inform viewers for many years to come.

38-FRASIER
Possibly the most successful tv spin off all time with multiple awards and rave critical reviews, 'Frasier' is a highly entertaining comedy farce. Misunderstandings become the basis of much of the episodes and they are often put right in 22 minutes. Unfortunately misunderstandings don't seem to be as hilarious in the real world. Which is a pity. If misunderstandings could be put right in under 22 minutes then maybe the world would be a much better place, or not. I don't know. I can't predict the future.

The sharp wit is also another thing that I like about it. The ability to have a sharp comeback in the blink of the eye is very impressive. I love dialogue and 'Frasier' has some great interactions between Niles and Frasier. I wish I could be as witty and cutting as them. But then I would probably have to hire a team of writers. And to do that I would have to be rich, rich enough to waste money on hiring writers to think of witty responses. But if I was that rich I don't think I would bother with that. I would much rather spend money on getting Lynda Day knighted.

37- THE WIRE
I know this is a shock. This tv show is usually in the top five tv shows of all time. Everybody seems to rave about it. But I do have a perfectly good explanation for it. I guarantee it. Every year since 'The Wire' has finished it has just grown in stature. The complex and labyrinth story telling, along with the remarkable and realistic characters all combine for a must watch show. Because to me if you have to watch anything, you have to watch 'The Wire'. It is just that good.

But I am not basing my rankings on how important a tv show is. No. I am basing it on how much I enjoy it. About how, if I was stuck in a room with my top 50 tv shows which one would i choose first? Which one would i choose 50th? And what would i choose and in what order would i choose between the first and fiftieth ones? For 'The Wire' I acknowledge that it is a great show, however there are about thirty six tv shows that I enjoy better. Sometimes watching 'The Wire' felt a bit like watching Shakespeare in that i know it is good, i know it is probably some of the best art i will ever likely to see in my life. But it does not seem as enjoyable or fun as other books or plays.

36- THE MICALLEF P(R)OGRAM(ME)
Shaun Micallef, in my humble opinion, is Australia's greatest ever comedian. He never fails to amuse me with his absurdity and word play. His ability to say the silliest things with the straightest of faces is also another one of his comedic traits that I admire. This was I think his first show, or at least his first major show after his work on 'Fulll Frontal' (i may be wrong on that. I don't know. I am too lazy to google it. Besides it is not that important. I mean if we were discussing the current conflict in Syria then that would be important. But we are not. We're talking about my top 50 tv shows ever. Hardly important.). Although he has done many more tv shows since then I still believe that this one is his best.

Comedy always seems hard to me. It seems hard to write it and seems hard to act it. You see many comedians taking dramatic roles, but you don't see many dramatic actors taking on comedy roles. Making someone cry to me is probably easier than making somebody laugh. As for writing, if you were writing let's say a death scene or something tragic like that then you would know that you writing something dramatic. But writing comedy is harder because who the hell knows if what you are writing is actually funny? That's why I always think I write best when I only write for myself.

35- KAVANAGH QC
Another lawyer show. But instead of the comforting predictability of 'Perry Mason' and its way of having Perry always defend the innocent 'Kavanagh QC' is instead a more complex look at the legal system. For one thing sometimes Kavanagh does civil cases. And another, and much more important thing, is that the clients that Kavanagh defends are actually sometimes guilty. This is a much more moral grey area than what 'Perry Mason' presents itself as and is therefore that much richer for it.

But I would still have Perry defend me if I was ever accused of murdering someone. I like Kavanagh. I think he is a great lawyer with a briliant mind. If Perry wasn't available in this hypothetical scenario due to....i don't know. Let's say an alien invasion that specifically targeted him then I would be more than happy for Kavanagh to defend me against these vicious and hurtful accusations of murder. I am sure he would do a fine job (although not as good as Perry obviously).

34- M*A*S*H
As I have writen before, comedy is hard. It is hard for many reasons and I admire people who try to do comedy (as long as it is not offensive). So doing a comedy by setting it in the Korean war is probably one of the hardest things you could do I reckon. But for eleven straight years 'M*A*S*H' somehow managed to do just that through character interactions and zany schemes of the 4077 MASH Unit. They never ever made fun of the soldiers who fought in the war. The humour came from laughing at the beauracratic bungling of the higher ups who never really had worry about getting shot at. The stuffy Generals whose arrogance and bravado belied their weak jelly-fish like underbelly. When MASH was at its best its humour was at its angriest.

There was a slight tonal change from season one to eleven. The show got less zany, and it became sort of more serious. It became more of a close knit family group. Which I supppose made sense considering how long they had been working together. Fans of the show still debate which era of the show is better. For me quite personally it is very hard to decide. But if I had to choose I would have to say the earlier seasons. It just seemed less preachy to me. They didn't have to tell me war was bad because they were already showing that. Nothing worse than a show, or anything else for that matter, trying to rub a message down your throat.
