see that's a great example of what I was trying to impart to kismet

His range is shit. Im sorry to sound brutal but he is a good entertainer.

he sings within a very small range he uses trick inflections to sound like he is modulating but he isn't

This is a theory I call the Karaoke theory. Basically people's ears are trained by what they have heard before. So ...some super pissed cunt singing New York New York thinks and believes he or she is Sinatra. The people who are witnessing this musical massacre believe it too.

And so the Myth is perpetuated....until.........in @Kismet 's case you have a real talent on yr hands. That is why it is sooooo important that while they are young they experience all styles. I may not be making a lot of sense with some of this, but I have trodden this ground before with a few kids (and adults)

Y wanna see something Jack Cool

This song came out before nelson was released. The band the special aka is borne of the specials as some of you may know "message to you rudy" etc
The specials were pretty much a front runner of some fabulous ska bands which united under the 2 tone banner recording label
Some of the bands who are now hard to find are "The swinging cats" "the Selecter"

Biggies on the label were madness and the beat specials.

I remember hearing this live at a place called the blind hall in the west end. That period of the 2tone ska united black and white people with music. It was another like thing where we (as musicians) thought we can unite everyone.

failed post Woodstock (Altamont) and it failed after ska dwindled into new age stuff.

Yep rambling. This song made me cry many times.

And this is where I may let you down on taste and at the same reinforce the notion that likes are subjective.

I absolutely dig this band. They are not clinically great, the vocals are average at best, and I just love it!!!

The Lyrics are very me...haha

On Friday nights we usually play at the surf club (cept now its tourist season) and I have loaned a banjo to a mate. We rock this out.

Now this is getting gnarly...Oscar Peterson passed a couple years ago RIP I saw him a few times with joe pass (guitar) This is what musos look like when they are playing for ourselves not for records

I wonder how many times you've been had
And I wonder how many plans have gone bad
I wonder how many times you had sex
I wonder do you know who'll be next
I wonder l wonder wonder I do

I wonder about the love you can't find
And I wonder about the loneliness that's mine
I wonder how much going have you got
And I wonder about your friends that are not
I wonder I wonder I wonder I do

I wonder about the tears in children's eyes
And I wonder about the soldier that dies
I wonder will this hatred ever end
I wonder and worry my friend
I wonder I wonder wonder don't you?

I wonder how many times you been had
And I wonder how many dreams have gone bad
I wonder how many times you've had sex
And I wonder do you care who'll be next
I wonder I wonder wonder I do

Well Danielle sounds like she has a big future and is lucky to have parents like you. Skipping a grade can be a bit of an adjustment, I did that too and it sucked a bit that I had to compete with older kids in sport etc. Just to complicate things I am the Godfather btw! lol

Ill be very interested to see how she gets on in future. If you ever need any tips on the music side, don't hesitate...If I don't know the answer, odds on I will know someone who does!

cheers.

PS she can play Santana riffs?? Impressive.

Hi sorry about the delay in reply. Have been on a bloody ipad and I cannot work with it well and also apologies for the godmum comment. Penelopepitstop as your moniker had me assume you're a chicky like me. :)

Thanks for that too. No matter which avenue she decides on, she will have a bright future. She's just one of those kids, that when her interest is piqued goes for it. I am somewhat worried in some ways though with her personal dedication to perfect all she does, she may crash and burn. purely because she i so young and has a Vercula Salt mentality of wanting it (being successful in her personal challenges... NOW! (as in her getting things RIGHT.. first time..every time) We keep a steady eye on her in that regard. One thing, her mantra is "eww sport" so there's no worry with her burning herself out in physical competition..lol

As to the music side I thank you for your kind offer and WILL seek your advice. Both my husband and I are classically trained singers and we help as much as we can but we also know it's a matter of being too close to be completely objective and trying with all good intention to help "correct" an issue, can lead to family drama and when it's INHOUSE near 24/7, it can cause a lot of tension just in any to day interactions. As such we try to remove ourselves as far as musical mentoring is concerned. as her talent is in different areas to ours. (Hub was with Savoy Opera when he lived in Melbourne, so Gilbert and Sullivan, Gershwin Bros and Roger's and Hart type of stuff).I have sung at the the SOH and was also the Kathy Westmoreland vocal in an Elvis Revival group - Roy Hawkins was the "Elvis") ..a such, you will know not only the styles we are GOOD with differ completely to those of Dani...That said, when I am several guild to the wind, I do a mean Detroit Rock City..lol She usually plays guitar as accompaniment.

Yes, Dani can play Santana riffs. Different I know, but she has also learned "Thunder Rolls", lyrics and chords within 30 mins of hearing that the song exists and recorded it and popped it on youtube as someone thought she wouldn't be able to do it. LOL The guy who challenged her was so pissed off.lol

As to what she wants to do? You are on the right path in a way. She wants to be the first person in science to create intelligent, emotive "life" in computers and robotics so as to help those with althzeimer's, parkinson and dementia.etc.. whose family and friends abandon them have "friends". To enable this, she wants to split spindle cells, see how they work in the human an othee mammal's brains, as they are our "feel" cells, and replicate them artificially. Of course I have just simplified it as I am a dumb-arse when it comes to "sciency" stuff, but that's the gist.

RE "drugs are bad mkay..lol they worked a treat for me in the 1980's and 1990's...lol 😜 Just sayin'.

@bleachy_dude ..I have found @penelopepitstop to be awesome in every interaction I have had with him. I guess the serious side you are seeing at the moment, comes from his clear passion for his craft.

awww that's nice of you to say. The penny thing is an in joke.

Wow I must say Danielle seems to be very sorted in her approach and aspirations. And Splitting spindle cells, crikey! When I was 14 my biggest aspiration was to pash chicks and surf a lot!

You and your man have great quals to help her. I have met so many people over the years who are classically trained and it usually forms the basis for them to go down any musical road with success . I play quite of jazz these days (mainly for me) but occasionally do a Sunday Afternoon set with some friends in a quartet. We do Gershwin and many more of the standards just upright bass, guitar, drums piano. Its a very diff vibe to flat out rockin it. The local crowd here ( and the tourists) love it, sunny afternoons by the sea, jazz , gin slings and the odd blunt :) Lately we have been doing a lot more improve Jazz, uusually after 4/5 drinks the Bass player, Steady Eddie Steadman will wander off on a lead and we all just chip in, some songs can go for 20 minutes but it is bags of fun.

I do share your concern that she may try to take on too much but I am not sure how you combat that. What kind of guitar does she play?

Well I hope one day I will know just how it relates.

I hear ya!! lol When she mentioned it at 10, I thought it was a passing interest but.no it isn't. She's designed her next yr yr11 studies around doing what she clearly wants to do.

In some ways, yes but in others..no. In my head I can "hear" her do certain songs, but they are just not a fit for her personally.

Would love to pop over.. you are only on Sth Straddie, right? Crap.. you may know George Ferguson as well and others I know too on the Coast?

Thanks! Sucks being a parent who actually gives a toss sometimes....

She has a six string accoustic and also a 6 string electric guitar and her keyboard is a pretty crappy 88 key Casio job...lol:barefoot: Did you want brand names re the guitars? I can go upstairs and have a squiz to find out?

North Straddie and you would be very welcome

Yes no rush but I would like to know which guitars she is playing. Some good players can become instantly a hell of a lot better with a good axe with a lower action.

:)

I reckon she needs better instruments as I know for sure the acoustic guitar we bought at Aldi..lol She was 8 and we didn't know how seriously he was going to take it but she's got a "thing" with it now and refuses to upgrade. The electric guitar though was purchased at Billy Hyde in Southport and we paid a pretty penny for it. (over 1500 on Sale). Hub went with her to choose the right one. She played several and got a feel for one in particular so that was the one she got. I will ask her when she gets home from school today just what make it is.:)

Would love to head over to Nth Straddie to see you. Just a shame school hols are done as we could have popped over for an overnighter mid-week.

BTW if you come down as far as Biggera Waters, you are more than welcome here too. :D

You are welcome, we play at Lally's but we play when we want too/same as the club. We don't need to play there and we usually setup when the tourists are NOT on the Island.

lol tourist time we get the invariable 19 yr old pack of "men" who think they are all chuck Norris, Voltaire and cassanova rolled into a kabab. So Sunday arvo Jazz is not on then. We have bouncers who can throw them to Sydney in one swing but its more about the vibe .

I have some friends who Live In BW the churchills (yes serious) lol

I have found some great stuff for Danielle in terms of playing styles from people like Joe Pass, I wont post them here because they are professional players vids and would bore the sox of a snapping turtle in summer.

It may be easier if when she needs to know about stuff just pm me and I will helf if I can. I am thinking that, just like z one day Ill say "yanno I contributed there" .

Music makes the world a better place. If it didn't no one would play. Think about that!

I am accredited on fucknowshowmanyrecords and sometimes I listen to my own stuff but largely I dig other peoples. I remember hangin out with the riptides as a kind of wise person (I was a wise as travis) and watching them rise and fall. Aned even the other night I was looking for a song to really punch a guitar and took ram jam.

When I first saw spideees do that song, I was amazed. Rare to trump an original. Spiderbait nailed that shit to the wall. So sometimes my young chargers come up trumps, sometimes it wasn't meant to be.

Now I am stoned (hindu kush) Yr girl will be ok. She is waaay bigger than "I wanna be a rock star"

I asked a friend (literally phoned a friend) in relation to yr daughter ...she said "lock her in a closet till shes 20 keep her away from boys they vacuum all the talent out of her" lol
