We know they had a disagreement. I think Tim was trying to get the ball rolling in a game of some sort - and the hypothesis about it being unfamilyfriendly makes sense. Anyway, Tim, while trying to get something started was unsuccessful, and Ed said something and Tim felt stupid and self conscious and called Ed an idiot.
Ed realised he could use this breach of etiquette to expose and neuter Tim. He plans to say something about it.
Before he does this, however, Tim sees him alone and starts the conversation.
Tim: "Ed, are we cool?"
Ed: "Yeah."
Tim starts it like he is checking if they have a problem Ed lies, because he actually does have a problem but is avoiding saying anything confrontational first.
Tim: "I just felt as though you were making fun of me, that's why I--" [cutoff]
Tim explains why he called Ed an idiot, possibly this was the beginning of an apology for calling him an idiot. We wont know, because Ed cuts him off. Ed is terrified that Tim will say something reasonable that Ed will not be able to disagree with, because he is sure that all Tim is doing is trying to make him look bad. Ed is sure that any apology would be fake, and that he will be able to belittle Tim, humble him by calling him out for calling someone an idiot in a public forum.
Ed: "Nah, I was gonna speak to you tomorrow because I was just pissed off that you called me an idiot. I was just like, do you think that okay--"
Ed talks over the beginning of the apology. The nah is meaningless, but shows Ed's habitual unwillingness to talk clearly in situations where he may not come off the best, like when he was dumping Jade. Luckily, in his talks with Jade she simply fills in what she wants to hear, so that works out for them, although Ed doesn't realize that. The nah shows his confrontational stance, a rejection of the apology. He wants to point out that he is the bigger man because he was going to discuss this sensibly, tomorrow, but then his impatience and temper and the bottled rage of weeks of frustration burst out and he dives in with the you pissed me off by calling me an idiot stuff. So far, Tim has started the dialogue, tried to explain what happened and to begin an apology. Ed has lied to him, because they are not cool, cut him off mid sentence, during an apology, and tried to point out that he was made angry by Tim's inappropriate use of the word idiot when it was directed to him, Ed.
Tim: "I know. I just felt like..." [trails off]
Tim acknowledges fault, a little, but wants to justify himself
[both start talking at the same time here]
This happens a lot. It often feels like Ed feeling he knows exactly what Tim is a bout to say, or he does not want to hear what Tim wants to say. Tim thinks what he wants to say is worth saying and tries to say it, even though Ed has tried to stop that idea from coming out.
Ed: "Like, I know you--
Ed is quite obsessed with the idea that he sees through Tim in a way no one else can, and he somehow thinks that he will be able to humble him.
Tim [contd from above]: "...whether you understood what I was saying or not--
Tim is a narcissist and wants to be sure that the person he is talking to is thinking the way Tim does, or at least is thinking about Tim, or is considering Tim's position.
Ed [over the top of Tim]: "No. That--"
Ed negates Tim again, and refuses to let him speak, acting as if Tim has said something wrong.
Tim [contd from above.]: "-- you made me feel like an idiot in front of everyone and I was just trying to
get the ball rolling--" [cut off]
Tim finally gets out his explanation for calling him an idiot.
Ed: "You called me an idiot. And I was just like "Are you being serious?""
Ed ignores that Tim is explaining himself and could be in the middle of an apology, he really wants Tim to feel bad for being such an ungentlemanly person as to call somebody an idiot. He does not consider TTim's reason at all, not for one second. It is irrelevant, all that is important is making Tim feel bad for doing it and taking him down a few pegs.
Tim: "Because you were make- I was like "Why are you doing this?" like--"
Tim is trying to direct Ed's thoughts to the fact that Ed had made Tim feel like a fool while he was in front of everyone.
Ed: "Nah. Like, I'm not saying that. I just think--"
The Nah once again says 'No, Tim, you are wrong,' and the second part is because Tim is trying to make the conversation be a bout how he felt nad why he said what he did, when Ed wants it to be about showing how he knows what Tim is up to and that he can't just go around thinking he can call people idiots. He does not care how Tim was feeling when he said it. He wants to use this chance to belittle Tim.
Tim [contd from above]: ""Why?" When I'm just trying to get the ball rolling, being vulnerable, you're
making me feel like a fool--" [cut off. Ed talks over the part after 'vulnerable']
Tim is painting himself as the victim, but if you are trying to entertain a group of people and start up a social game and someone makes you feel a goose then you do feel vulnerable, so I don't think this is ALL gameplay, but some of it is. When he called Ed an idiot, it was because Ed was hindering what he wanted to do, which was start a group game with everyone there.
Ed: "No. No you- you weren't, at all. I- I felt as if you just- you just pointed me out and I felt victimized,
on the point of, well, I'm not the one saying it. Everyone was saying it. So why just point out--"
Ed once again negates what Tim said. He invalidates it. I felt vulnerable says Tim. No you didn't says Ed, No you didn't feel vulnerable. I did not make you feel that way. In fact, what happened was you were 100 percent in the wrong and were making me feel victimised, but he trails into nonsense here before he explains anything, because another part of his brain has suggested that what he just said may be taken as being subjective, and so he wants to validate it by saying that everyone agrees with him, like how all black women in England want to vote for Ed.
Tim [over the top of Ed]: "No..."
Tim justifiably objects.
Ed [contd from above]: "-- and say "Ed, you're an idiot" 'cause you said that. So I just felt--" [cut off]
There is only one thing Ed wants this to be about, and that is that Tim called him an idiot. He does not actually care, unless he is a baby, but he wants to use this as an excuse to target Tim.
Tim: "And then it was when Tahan--"
I don't know enough to know what this could be. Maybe he is pointing out that at the time, Tahan was on Tim's side, so not everyone was saying it, like Ed just tried to say. If so, he is countering Ed's claim with evidence to the contrary
Ed [contd from above]: "-- it's extremely rude. And I was just like "Who's he-- who- you can- you should never be able to call anyone that--"
Ed still just wants to say his one thing again, because it is all he has, and he is amazed by npw that he has not already won. He thinks Tim thinks he is better than Ed - who's he...who, you can,' - I guess this is who does he think he is to think he can talk to other people like that? This Tim thinks he is hot shit to do that - that is why Tim called Ed an idiot in Ed's mind, because Tim thinks he is better than everyone, well, better than Ed. He then goes back to the manners his mother taught him, that he shouldn't say that. This argument, in Ed's mind, negates anything Tim may have said that the way Ed was treating Tim was making Tim feel foolish in front of everyone. This is okay for Ed, because he didn't resort to name calling, and thus he has the moral high ground.
