Tim Dormer back in the House

I always am a little bit perplexed and a little bemused when the words "ratings grab" are thrown around as a bad thing? Higher ratings means more people watched.

If more people wanted to watch, what was the reason? Because the producer gave the audience what it wanted.

In saying this, I think Alex was pretty stupid to call himself a purist.

I'm definitely not a purist. I'm a Big Brother lover. I love the show in its original and current form and everything in between.
well, a ratings grab is akin to 'selling out'. sacrificing the art for the sake of increasing the fanbase.

Increased ratings due to a stunt will likely be short lived. Remember the hype about BB 2014 really dying down once the launch went to air? That's the after effects of a broken promise (weak stunt blown out of proportion). People see certain stunts as a breach of the original format they love and tune out. People that tune in just for the stunt may tune out at its conclusion (having not connected with this year's housemates due to poor editing and lack of online content). In conclusion..it is a disaster for Big Brother.

It may very well be but I'm not convinced. Running the show the same way they did in 2001 wouldn't rate either.

That is true but the executive producer of the 2001 series has also explained exactly why the current season is doomed. Turn the zoo into a circus and you destroy the whole thing.
I haven't watched it yet... But people still pay to go to the circus.

.. And that's my point. It may no longer be a zoo. But I like the zoo AND the circus.

The TL : DR version of my post is:

If you're the executive producer of Big Brother and you have to bring back Tim Dormer to boost ratings then you clearly aren't doing your job properly and are incompetent at producing Big Brother.
Yeah but even from looking at the threads on here it's easy to see this season is a bust so I can't blame them for trying to save it. In my job at least we have the luxury of pre screeners with movies and adjusting things based on opinions. In a format like this you have to react on the fly because you're producing a daily show. That's not meant to negate any of the stupid decisions that were made but it's not surprising they've swerved and are trying to save it by any means possible.

where do you think the phrase 'jump the shark' originated?
From Happy Days. A sitcom. Completely different genre. I agree with @bleachy_dude in that sometimes I feel the sentiments on here are stuck back from day 1, episode 1 of BB. Anyone who believes Channel 10 - the same network that is struggling to pay OFFSPRING right now after the government grants ran out despite it being it's most acclaimed show by far - would somehow save it in 2015 are delusional.

The biggest issue is that all three of these Nine seasons have felt really childish, and have utilised irrelevant tasks to create conflict that is inorganic (and rarely creates conflict).
Also, what do they gain out of saying things like "THE BIGGEST <blank> IN BIG BROTHER HISTORY", like first of all the history is about 11 years so shut up. Second of all, most of your Big things are either terrible, have already been done by another country, or both.

I'm 100% in favour of organising a mass cull of at least one episode to let Alex know that we're pissed. Does anybody know what kind of effect that would have? Significant drop in ratings or no?

Hey it sucks but I think most people like to provide the public with what they want to see. If not, not only do I not get paid but a movie goes straight to DVD. This isn't some new thing... I've been in the industry over 20 years and we've always relied on public feedback to shape our final wide release even back then. Something that a daily reality show doesn't have the luxury of doing, no matter how much we think it does.

Well you're proving the point Peter Abbott made on Reality Check. He said when the show is run on stunts the housemates don't go about their daily business - instead they sit around waiting for the next stunt and so does the audience. Therefore making the formula self destructive.

'commercial television'. he states that one cant sell out in the realm of commercial television despite have a decades old trope based on the very premise.

i get it. labels gotta have britneys to pay the bills too. that doesnt mean i am going to have much respect for the end product.

I wonder if the HMs will think that they must be super boring for a former HM to come back.

Unless you have a ratings box in your house there is nothing you can do to effect anything, the people who do have a box are not as far as I know known to anyone beside Oztam.
