...the many things that you remember as a kid or teenager...

I love toobs & getting my hair wet
I remember watching the show 'Chances' on channel Nine. It used to screen in the early hours of the morning around 1-2am.

It was pretty much soft porn and weird. I used to set my alarm and sneakily wake up and watch it quietly in the living room with no volume while the folks were napping. Does anyone else remember it?

Yep, it had Jeremy Sims showing his bum, and lots of topless women including Kate Langbroek. It was supposed to be about a family winning the lottery but it went all soft porn and satanic cults. Those were the days...

...I think that I may have mentioned this before on this thread but I'm not sure... I used to love watching variety shows like 'The Don Lane Show' or 'The Ernie Sigley Show' and eventually 'Hey Hey it's Saturday' because the would have International bands and guests on the shows and we got to see heaps of them when they were here... nowadays you only have the stupid morning shows where the hosts are too busy promoting themselves rather than interviewing our favourite International stars... plus of course 'Countdown' lol!... as you said Meglos... those were the days indeed!... cheers.

...I never used to either reepbot... I even remember when Jimmy Carson was doing that show... he would be telling 'jokes' and the audience were in raptures whereas I was just sitting there... staring... and was... blank... waiting and waiting and waiting for the 'humour' to kick in... it never came... I'm not being biased because I'm a Pom but British hosts do it way better... just compare Graham Norton to say the likes of Jay Lenno/David Letterman and their endless other so-called 'funny hosts'... there's no comparison whatsoever in my books anyway... cheers.

Battle with monsters, lest ye become a monster
I remember Johnny Carson on late at night. George Segal was on playing the banjo. He sang “chicken in the garden, chicken on my kneee, chicken in the kitchen on the fricassee”. May not have happened that way precisely, but that’s how I remember it.

Yeah, the Don Lane Show was big in our house. It used to be genuinely exciting when an international guest was on.

And he would sing on the show, and it didn’t seem like a self indulgence. Of course I was young then.

...the thing that I liked about Don Lane was that he was so open-hearted and really cared for all the people around him... he always got the best from his guests by being so genuine and respectful to them and didn't mind them taking over his show when they were having a great time being interviewed...

...I still remember to this day when he had one of my sweet darling wife's and myself favourite bands on the show and they were 'Dr Hook'... they were totally uncontrollable during their interview and Don just let them play out their zany fun on the interview couch and because he did Dennis Locorriere then opened up and said that he wanted to award the Australian public with a classic Australian song because of their support of them for the last couple of years... they asked Don if they could he play it on Don's show?... of course Don said 'yes' and Dennis sang 'The Wild Colonial Boy' which I still love to this day... here is that show...

...but what really makes it great too is right towards the end because of what Don Lane tells Ray Sawyer and Dennis Locoriere about an audience member and their reactions to it is such a brilliant part of it all... it is amazing and it all happened because of Don's generosity towards other people... I love that clip... and here is one from a couple of years later with them messing about once again lol!... (I think that Dennis Loccoriere is most likely stoned in this one lol!)...

...yet again Don allows them to take over his show and to be even more zanier this time lol!... Don's show was so successful because of his hosting manner... he was a great entertainer... I used to watch American Gridiron when he hosted the show for SBS methinks from memory for a number of years later...

...(if you're all wondering as to why I'm up so late posting it's because I'm watching England play Sweden Live at he moment lol!)... here is one more of them on Don's show a couple of years later yet again and also 'Countdown' too lol!...

...anyhow... I'll finish this post with another great version of 'The Wild Colonial Boy' from them... cheers.

You're like the only person I know who remembers it Meglos! Thank you for validating that I'm not crazy and didn't dream waking up and watching porn as an 8 year old. Never knew it had a plot hahaha I just remember all the topless girls, not that I even knew what I was really looking at...

I started watching it with my mum, it was promoted as being about an ordinary family winning the lottery. My mum soon gave up on it when the weirdness began, lol.
This description does make it sound like the best thing ever though :D

Chances is an Australian evening soap opera, produced from 1991 to 1992. It initially told the story of the average middle-class Taylor family whose lives are transformed by winning $3 million in the lottery. Later episodes however diverged considerably away from the series original premise (lol)
Attempts to boost the ratings saw an increase in sex and nudity, including storylines involving bondage and lesbianism. These sexual elements provoked considerable controversy, with some TV watchdogs attacking Chances as "teleporn". The program's storylines also became increasingly bizarre and fantasy-oriented, with new stories involving the Asian Triads, ghosts, an angel on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, an Egyptian Sun Goddess, laser-wielding vampires, man-eating plants, and neo-Nazis hunting valuable Third Reich artifacts (in Melbourne, bizarrely)

Thanks @Mr Stickyfingers
I knew from my interest in old charts that Dr Hook had a hit in 1981 with 'The Wild Colonial Boy', but I always wondered why they chose to cover that old Australian song. Thanks for explaining the story behind it.

I remember it, but I wasn’t a teen any more when it was on. We used to laugh about it at work. One of the actresses had a vague resemblance to a girl in the office. This one, which I had to google for, Natalie McCurry, former Miss Australia. Hard even to find a decent pic of her now, and she passed away in 2014.

Didn't know she had passed away. Another actress who possibly played her sister, Cathy Godbold, also passed away young.

Oh and Michael Caton was in it, and Deborah Kennedy who starred in the "NOT HAPPY JAN" ads (*️as well as Prisoner and A Place To Call Home).

...actually Meglos my sweet darling wife and myself have been to 3 Dennis Loccoriere concerts in the past few years when he toured here... in one of the concerts he said that he fell in love with the song when someone was singing folk songs in a pub in Australia one day and then learned it because of his love for it... he didn't even know what a 'Kookaburra' was lol!... he found out what it was and if you notice when he sings the song and says the word 'Kookaburra' in the lyrics that he sort of stresses the word because he likes the sound and name of the bird and loves singing it lol!...

...he's a great singer Live and really gets the audience involved with quite a few of the songs... he always comes out for meet and greets with the audience too... we have photos with him... and he chats for about a minute or so with each fan if time permits... we love him as you can imagine lol!... he tells the audience of when Dr Hook met with and did jam sessions with my other living hero Paul McCartney a few times because they used to hang out together lol!... just imagine how mind blowing that would be for me if I was in that room at the time?... lol!... cheers.

Old school lollies are the best.

Coloured milk bottles, which you can't get anymore.
.
Meglos, Allen’s lollies currently have a special edition of “Drumsticks “. Milk bottle type like lollies based on drumstick ice creams. The packet has three flavours: vanilla; chocolate; and boysenberry. We had a pack yesterday. They didn’t really float my boat but you might find them worth a try.

I loved Choo Choo bars. They still have them but they are less than half the size, very doft and don’t even stain your teeth. A very poor representation.

Thanks qtkt, I'll have a look for them. Not that I need to be eating any more lollies, but for a special occasion a few won't hurt.
