I <3 Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch :D

Psycho cat is not my cat, I just chose the avatar because someone here rather charmingly called me a Psychopath (in another thread) lol.

Aussie hoarders type show starts on lifestyle home in September. And they're calling for auditions for Aussie Wife Swap.

oooooooooooo
I can give them the names of at least 4 very freaky hoarders, this is a very common ailment. I know people who do trauma cleaning, they have regular contracts for some public housing hoarders that have to be cleaned out twice a year.

I have a sis who is one of the worst hoarders, she has to clear her bed to sleep and her bath is full of crap.
And my best friend I mentioned once before, I help her do chuck outs - and sort of organise, but she's the one I helped clear her garage, and lo and behold there was a car hidden beneath a mountain of crap.
I sorted her kitchen when she moved - OMG I have never seen so many packets of pasta, she had enough to open a store at a market.

I love Wife Swap, hell you get to see wome weirdos, last one I saw the whole family ate only raw meat- eww, eww, eww.

^^^when I worked in Community Mental Health we went to LOTS of hoarder type houses  honestly it's really sad it's a control disorder and is really debilitating for the sufferer and their families. Parents have had their children taken away from them and some people have been detained under the mental health act.

I can't watch hoarders because I know that they are unlikely to be successful and even if they do within weeks it will be back to how it was. This entrenched behavior needs long term psychotherapy in combo with medication to even have a small chance of changing.

Wife Swap or Trading Spouces on the other hand is awesome I think you all know this lady :D

I actually think this version is really cruel, unsuspecting hoarder goes out for the day while family member lets in camera crew to clean it out. Hoarding happens for a reason. Having a good old clean out doesn't really help a hoarder. At least with the US version they had shrinks to help but IMO even that wasn't in depth enough.

 I imagine that could actually be quite psychologically damaging!

It is a pointless task the junk will be back again within days and yes it is almost guaranteed it will be detrimental to the hoarder. Years of therapy is required.

Yeah as if these people aren't psychologically damaged to begin with. Maybe it's all set up? Maybe they're not real hoarders but like my OH, pack rats.

Yeah for sure. American TV seems to go that one step further, Australia baulks at some of the stuff. Our versions seem to be tame. No way could we do a social experiment on kids like they did on one tv show which name escapes me. Nor could we do our own toddlers & tiaras. There was a child performer one we had and there was outrage, again the name escapes me. Yasmin's getting married. We don't like trash if it's our own. We prefer to watch American trash.

I meant I think our version of Hoarders will be a bit of a set up. They'll be pack rats not hoarders.

Good point Cowie, you're right we Aussies don't seem to be as comfortable with extremes unlike other countries. Toddlers and Tiaras is a good example, though there is children's beauty pageants in Australia they are nothing like T & T, those mum are beyond OTT.

Kid Nation was awful, I only watched a couple of episodes, it made me feel really uncomfortable. There is an English Version too, can't remember what it was called but it wasn't as game show like.

There was an American one where they put a bunch of kids from various backgrounds out into the country and made them fend for themselves, they had to have leaders and challenges to win things. They had to work as teams and all pull their weight. It was a social experiment.

Think of the trust issues these people would now have :(

That doesn't seem right if they're not willing participants. I think having someone throwing out my stuff would be bad enough without bringing television cameras along.
