What about people who go on Big Brother for 3 months or more and walk away with nothing? At least this year they are getting the appliances online voucher, but in 2012 and 2013 - nothing.

I guess expectations were probably pretty high after Fans vs Faves.
 
I only tune in for the room reveals, and even that rather patchily - but every week that I saw, the blonde-haired women and dark-haired men couples were getting smoke blown up their arses by the judges for their amazeballs styling.

The brothers, whose work I liked, would be praised, I felt, reasonably, and the dark haired couple would be slagged off 9 times out of 10 for their styling, even though they often did some interesting architectural work and fittings, using the height of ceilings and spaces in an interesting way.

I was pleased to see those two pairs win well; and as for the sulky tantrum-throwing sore losers! I'm sure it was disappointing, but some decorum would not have gone astray. I prefer the Block when it's houses.
 
Watching it though I thought M&C got duped.. they could have passed it in but the auctioneer went back out to get it just over the line from a buyer even though it appeared they agreed to pass it in.

Actually the bidder went over the reserve so that means it would be sold.
 
This one had some of the worst??
There were seasons where people made zero.
By "some of the worst" I meant the ones where people made 0. If you stacked all the winnings from season 1 to this season in order of lowest to highest then this season did have some on the lower end of the scale. It also had some great results too. I feel bad for the ones that only pocketed a little bit but at the same time that's the nature of the real estate game. They will all come out on top with upcoming projects as a result of this show anyway :)

To be fair the contestants on the block obviously do a lot more work to deserve the end money they get. Most people would go on Big Brother to get famous and they do that by sitting around by the pool having a holiday for 3 months (if they get to the end of course)
 
I cannot believe that 2 couples have hundreds of thousands of dollars and 3 have barely anything, I can understand how upsetting it would have been for them. But I think Max and Karston probably didn't need to be crying so much because I would presume that their wedding would have cost them $0. I could be wrong!

I didn't think that Carlene and Micheal would do too well because their bathroom with the stairs was awfully dangerous and a few
other things I didn't think people would like. I think Max and Karstons was over valued.
 
The Block: Glasshouse result: Five reasons it was always going to be a roller-coaster for contestants and viewers

The Block: Glasshouse hammered the ratings last night with a massive 2.764 million viewers across Australia’s five capital cities tuning in to see brothers Simon and Shannon Vos crowned winners.

The result for the roller-coaster finale of the Channel 9 renovation show was a massive leap from the 2.181 million viewers that tuned in to the finale of The Block: Fans v Faves — won by Steve O’Donnell and Chantelle Ford.

Last night’s result was on a par with the 2.808 million that watched Alisa and Lysandra Fraser win last year’s The Block: Sky High.

And the ratings will blow past 3 million once regional viewers are added in.

The Block crushed Seven’s The X Factor Live Performance (1.187 million) Ten’s Modern Family (461,000).

Fans are still reeling from the shock auction results. Simon and Shannon won an extra $100,000 after their apartment sold $335,000 over reserve. Chris and Jenna snagged $310,000 over reserve but it was all downhill from there.

Maxine and Karstan made $40,000 with Darren and Deanna as well as Michael and Carlene devastated to only collect $10,000.

THE FIVE THINGS THE BLOCK AUCTIONS TAUGHT US

1. PRAHRAN ISN’T ALBERT PARK: the location of The Block: Glasshouse — next to a tramline on busy High Street — was never going to be as appealing to buyers as laid-back beachside Albert Park. Prahran is also choc-full of apartment stock whereas apartments are rare in Albert Park.

2. THE JUDGES DON’T KNOW EVERYTHING: Neale Whittaker, Shaynna Blaze, and Darren Palmer keep stressing luxury when they judge apartments — but that isn’t what buyers seem to want. Shannon and Simon and Chris and Jenna delivered funky and relaxed — exactly the same vibe that Steve and Chantelle created to win Fans v Faves. None were the judges’ favourites.

3. FANS V FAVES RESULT WAS A ONE-OFF: Everyone made the mistake of thinking the Albert Park results earlier this year — in which all four teams won over $500,000 — would happen again on Glasshouse. We now know those Albert Park results are never likely to be repeated. There were nowhere near as many bidders for the Prahran apartments.

4. IT IS HARD TO SELL 5 APARTMENTS AT ONCE: The Block: Glasshouse auctions — all five apartments sold — actually outperformed the Melbourne auction clearance rate of 73 per cent. The Fans v Faves contestants benefited from the fact that only four apartments were up for auction.

5. IT ONLY TAKES ONE BIDDER TO SKEW THE RESULT: It was the last minute bidding from a young brother and sister combo that took Chris and Jenna’s apartment way past reserve. The same pair took Shannon and Simon’s apartment into the stratosphere. When the pair finally secured Maxine and Carstan’s apartment they dropped out — and auctions four and five crumbled.

Gutted The Block contestant Dee Jolly says Prahran was always an ‘iffy’ and ‘risky’ suburb of choice.

Speaking exclusively to Confidential, Dee said she and husband Darren Jolly are gutted after only taking away $10,000 following a controversial end to The Block Glasshouse auctions.

She said all the couples generally thought the reserves for the apartments — there’s was set at $1,380,000 — were too high for the area.

“I think Prahran is a bit of an iffy suburb,’’ Dee said.

“The reserves were a bit cocky, to be honest.

“It’s surrounded by some really great blue chip suburbs, but it’s a risky suburb like Richmond was.

“So I think the reserves, I would have liked to have seen them much more conservative because of that.

“I think the building also wasn’t the most attractive prosect and all very risky because of those things.

Jolly said she does not expect any compensation from the producers or Channel 9

“I think it’s a business, I would never expect that, I understand how the world works,’’ she said.

“Of course that would be lovely and we would all love that, but it’s a business and the chances of that is zero, that’s all I can say.”

And despite rumours swirling of contestants suing Channel Nine for compensation, the network has revealed it won’t cough up.

“While we hope that all contestants walk away with a financial reward for the time and effort they commit to The Block, it is the buying public that determines the outcome of this program,” said Michael Healy, Director of Television for the Nine Network.

“I’d like to thank the contestants for their remarkable achievements in producing these incredible apartments, as well as the very talented crew who produced this series, which has been a massive ratings success.”

Jolly also thought the results were just bizarre.

“It was a bizarre result,’’ she said.

“You have two apartments who kill it, and three just die, it’s just not what nobody would have guessed.

“One apartment that did well was facing the south with all that noise, and the other had no external windows.”

All The Block couples watched the show from The College Lawn in Prahran last night, and there were tears.




“It was really horrible for everyone, even the guys that did well,’’ she said.

“It was so hard for the boys, it’s was like being at a wedding when the bride’s father has just died.

“It was so hard for them to celebrate and they were crying as well and gutted for us, the mood was just really extreme.”

She told the Herald Sun that they are just trying to take everything in, after the disappointing end to their experience on the show.

“We are reeling, we just did not expect that, none of us,’’ she said.

“Money doesn’t define us, it’s not the reason we did the show and it’s not going to ruin us or anything like that, but it’s certainly disappointing.

“We worked really hard, and I think with me and what the viewers have seen of me on the show, I’m very passionate about what I do, and I hold myself to a really high expectations.

“Daz completely flogged himself on the show and took pride in what he was doing.

“So to have nothing much to show for it at the end, it’s really upsetting and devastating.

“You would hope your hard work would pay off.

“Essentially we spent three months building an apartment, agonising over everything we did for nothing.

‘We are grateful for the opportunity and the experience was great and I’m sure great things will happen for us, but we would have liked to have some sort of rewards for our hard work.”

What’s next for the Jolly’s?

They are tipped to join the next series, but nothing is signed on the dotted line yet.

“There are rumours at this point, and we’ve had conversations, but nothing is locked in,’’ she said.

“We are just looking at starting our own business, obviously we are excited at this point.

“We haven’t got any further then that.”

I don't think it's the same thing at all. BB is a social experiment (or it's meant to be) - I'm sure being isolated from loved ones is mentally draining, but at the end of the day you're sleeping regular hours, lounging about in the sun all day, etc. HMs leave the house and compare it to a paid 3 month holiday. Can you say that about the Block? Hell no. These people lose sleep and work their arses off for months on end without a break. No one in their right mind would do all of that work for 4-5 months if they knew they were only going to get $10,000 out of it. I saw someone on another forum break down 10k into an hourly wage for the teams - based on the amount of hours they would have put in, it didn't even add up to $7.00 an hour. All that work, for far far FAR less than minimum wage. Fuck that. I don't blame any team for feeling disappointed.
 
The Block Glasshouse stars 'left in the red'

SOME Block Glasshouse contestants, who made only $10,000 for five months of emotional and exhausting work, say they have been left 'in the red' from the experience.

Contestant couples Michael and Carlene and Dee and Darren left nearly empty handed, taking home a measly $10,000.

"It was a completely unexpected result for all of us," Dee told Kyle and Jackie O on Sydney station Kiis 106.5FM.

She said the experience had actually cost her family as they were unable to earn their living while on the show.

"Not only did we not make anything from it but people have to understand we put our lives on hold,'' Dee said.

"It's an expensive exercise to take the risk of going on that show.''

"We are in the red from it.''

Already there have been calls for Channel 9 to put the profits from the extra apartment to those who made little from the auctions.

Jackie O suggested Channel 9 should give those who didn't do so well $100,000 each, given the huge amount of money that the TV station would have made from the high rating show.

"It's a huge show and I know it's rated very well,'' Dee acknowledged.

"They get a lot out of it (Channel 9) and we have given a lot.''

But she said she did not expect Channel 9 to be handing out cash, saying it was a business.

Dee said she would like to return to a future Block so she ended up with a win.

But in the meantime, she hoped to use it as a launching pad for new building and interior design businesses.

"We just have to move on. Other great things will come out of this.''

Dee said she was stunned by the results of the auction, given the north facing units should have fetched more than the others.

"In terms of real estate, it was just bizarre.''

The after-party for the contestants and crew was cancelled, after the teams were left feeling deflated.

"We had a room at a hotel near by... So we had a party planned... Obviously it was a bit of a fizzer," Dee said.

Dee also told the Today Show she wanted to, "take the f*****g Bromley's [artworks]".

Maxine Stokes told the team after the cameras stopped rolling, "Me crying will probably get you all another Gold Logie".

Winners Simon and Shannon spoke to Kyle and Jackie O this morning and told them they would have been gutted if they'd won only $10 000.

The hourly rate should include all the bonuses, red carpet events, and gushy 9 shit ad nausea um - and the $700 each of them is paid by 9 per week.

So people like Dee and Dopey, it is probably more than either deserve, neither has any skill, all they are offfering is labour - Dee, not sure what she offers, good magazine skills?

This result was pretty easy to predict, and 9 are either lying - or right, yeah that stupid - they would have property experts telling them how to cause an upset, and that no Aussie will buy a cave - sure enough OS buyers.

And they probably have a series lined up for all the past losers of the Block.
 
I agree with Dee about Prahan. Not that I know Melbourne that well.

The outside of The Glasshouse is ugly & still looks like a business.

Also Dee & Darren aren't struggling.

I also think Dee was working during the show.

All she was shown during the show was shopping. Can some women shop all day, every day.

Even though it doesn't say how much it sold for, my guess is over 2 million

Former AFL ruckman Darren Jolly sells Surrey Hills and joins The Block Prahran

Delisted AFL premiership player Darren Jolly and his wife Deanne are the mystery couple on the next series of The Block, the office block conversion currently underway in High Street, Prahran.

The Sunday Herald Sun, normally compliant with the Channel 9 demands for embargoed Block secrecy, broke the revelation on the weekend, having earlier alluded to a retired sportstar being a contestant.

Last month the couple sold their self-renovated Edwardian era Surrey Hills home ahead of the scheduled auction.

It was renovated by the ruckman on days off and after training, along with designs by his fashionista wife.

Last year Jolly completed his building and construction certificate four at night school. The couple paid $1.35 million in 2010.

It was joked among his then Collingwood AFL teammates of his growing interest in renovation and property development

But it was actually Heath Shaw, the former Magpies defender now at GWS, who suggested that he wouldn't mind taking on a spot on The Block.

"I would really enjoy that and I know Darren Jolly is into his home renovations, I could get big Dazza and do all the co-ordination stuff and he could do the building,'' Shaw said in the lead-up to the listing of his then recently completed Kew East home.
Paul Richards, the Bekdon Richards listing agent, described the Jolly's three bedroom cottage renovation as one of the best he’d seen in 13 years in real estate.

Their 1910 house on 450 square metres had period features including high ceilings, stained glass and original fireplaces as well as for contemporary comforts such as refrigerated cooling and ducted heating.

Just two doors along - another three bedroom 1910 cottage on 410 square metres last sold at $1.1 million in 2007 - sold ahead of its scheduled March auction too. Both recent sale prices have been undisclosed.

The current Surrey Hills median house price sits at a record $1.28 million, according to RP Data.

There was a $2.15 million sale of a renovated five bedroom cottage on 845 square metres set the street record last November.

The former Collingwood, Sydney and Melbourne ruckman, a two-time premiership player and reluctant 2013 AFL retiree, is St Kilda's part-time ruck coach.

A silly rumour prank that the ruckman was set to to play with the Bonbeach side during 2014, is seemingly set to come to fruition this Friday.

After hearing the rumour, the Bonbeach Sharks president Reece Murphy phoned Jolly who both started to think about it.

At this stage, Jolly has agreed to play only one game with Bonbeach - on Good Friday, when the Sharks host reigning premiers EdiAsp, according to the local paper, the Frankston Standard Leader.

The Block: Frank Valentic on why the Glasshouse contestants were never going to make the same record profits of last series

IT was the question 2.7 million Block viewers were asking after last night’s devastating auction results — what the hell went wrong?
After two fantastic results with both Chris and Jenna and Simon and Shannon taking home $310,000 and $335,000 respectively, The Block results took a downward turn.

After being dubbed the best and biggest apartments ever seen on the renovating show — and given the immense publicity and hype they attracted — the five Glasshouse properties should have broken sales records.

But the final three struggled to sell and Melbourne property market and Block guru Frank Valentic says the apartments were never going to reach the sky high prices of last season’s Albert Park properties.

Valentic, Director of Advantage Property Consulting, has bid on the last five series of The Block and had three clients who were keen on securing a Glasshouse apartment.
But he says unlike past series where bidders were happy to secure any of the apartments, this time round buyers were very specific about which apartment they wanted.

Valentic told news.com.au that he took 25 buyers through The Block and there was one apartment they wanted above the rest — the boys.
And he secured the apartment for his investor client, paying a top price of $1.91 million.

He names the reasons that the final three properties flopped compared to the record profits of last season:

• High Street, Prahran location

Valentic says there wasn’t the same amount of buyers interested in these properties, mainly due to the location. He said while the warehouse conversions in Albert Park offered a quiet side street, High St was situated on a major road that was considered quite noisy for such a high price point.

• Not enough bidders

He adds that because of this there simply was not enough interest in the building and therefore not enough bidders to spread among the five apartments — which was reflected in the second half of the auction. He says the final two apartments were much smaller, south-facing and quite dark, which was a turn off for many buyers. The first three had better functionality, aspect, size and layout and the ones buyers overwhelmingly wanted.

• Selling five apartments at once is too many

Five apartments is too much choice for buyers, the traditional Block format of four apartments allows the pool of buyers to be spread more easily and less supply creates more demand.

• They should have passed them in

Valentic says if he was selling the properties, he would have advised the final two couples to pass the properties in and negotiate later with any buyers that “came out of the woodwork”. 2011 contestants Josh and Jenna passed their property in at $901,000 and later sold it for $1 million, reaping a $99,000 profit — far more than the disappointing $10,000 seen by two couples last night. “But that’s the benefit of hindsight”, he added.

• Too much difference in the reserves

The gap in last season’s properties was just $175,000 from lowest to highest. This year was $520,000, creating an unequal market. Last time most buyers would have happily secured any of the apartments, but this season they were very specific and in most cases only wanted one particular one.

• Last series’ reserves were “very, very low”

After the record results of last series, Valentic says the reserve prices of the Glasshouse apartments were comparably higher so it was highly unlikely that each couple would each receive the same $500,000 plus profit of the former series. He says the Fans v Faves couples simply “got lucky”.

With these factors combined, the agents were all “flat as tacks” after the auctions and says the celebration drinks were more like “commiseration type drinks” for everyone involved.

“All the agents felt it,” he told news.com.au, “it was pretty devastating and pretty sombre celebration, all of us were still feeling the contestant’s pain and to see them crying, we all felt sick. It was pretty shocking.

“You could feel the energy in the room after Max and Karstan’s auction just completely changed, it was like someone turned the switch off after the second auction. It was like a game of two halves, the first half went one way and the second went another.

“But that’s real estate for you, sometimes you get a result and sometimes you don’t.”
Valentic says the next series in Darling St, South Yarra should fare much better due to the location.

And it seems the 'buyers' only wanted the 1st 3 apartments.

Should be bulldozed and something commercial built there, nobody would want to live so close to Punt rd too.

Well don't forget Michael & Carlene did the AMP Advertisements so they already have some spin-off earnings. Obviously not the windfall they were hoping for but it's a start.
Dee is planning to start a designing business similar to the Twins (though frankly I wouldn't use either of those businesses simply on their personalities, lol).
Not sure about Max & Karsten but the point is they all have far more opportunities open to them now; time to pick themselves up and grab those asap.
Can't feel 'too sorry' for them really.

I think the final outcome of Apartment 6 is something we'd all like to hear about.

Just think, Channel 9 could have a spin off series - "The Block Auction Autopsy".

Trying to cut the tension presenter Shelley Craft told the devastated couples in the room, saying 'we want tonight to be a celebration of five months of hard work.

'Hasn't anyone got an announcement like a new contract or pregnancy?'

But her attempt at lightening the mood wasn't appreciated as the couples shook their heads, looking appalled.

A tearful Shelley then added: 'I'm speechless- and that doesn't happen very often.'

God knows what happened tonight,' The Block:Glasshouse presenter later told Daily Mail Australia, adding that the contestants were 'broken' by the shock results.
'Particularly Dee and Darren who left their kids at home for a long period of time,' she said.

'The money that is potentially on offer is life changing and when you're going to sleep at 3am every night thinking that it's all going to be worth it in the end, it's an emotional night.'

She continued, mentioning that the grand finale has impacted her, the crew and co-host Scott Cam.

'Scotty and I and the whole production crew never want it to end like this.

'The show makes its money back, and that's fabulous, but we all want the contestants to make life changing amounts of money, that's the point.'

However 38-year-old added that 'it's just a game' and hopes everyone will achieve a better outcome in the long run.

'They'll bounce back and the opportunities that come out of the show, as we've seen in the past, are extraordinary.'

'It's probably not going to make them five hundred grand in a year but the opportunities that will come will hopefully soften this blow.'

Winner Simon and Shannon felt the tension, saying, 'Not to say we're ungrateful but it's awkward for us, it's hard obviously winning and seeing them go through that, it's hard,' agreed his younger sibling.
Regardless of the final leaderboard, Shannon revealed that each of the contestants had hoped to take home a minimum of $500,000 - $165,000 over what they themselves won.

'We said last week that we would rather see everyone just make half a million dollars, I don't give a s*** who wins,' he confessed.

While the pair were delighted to have come out on top, they were equally upset that after so many weeks of tireless work, their friends have received little to no compensation.

Shannon said: 'The hardest thing is knowing how much effort they put in, it's so draining and so tiring, and we deserve to get reimbursed for that - not a measly 20 grand.'

'We know how hard it is so the hardest thing is to know that they aren't being rewarded for that.

zero sympathy for them on facebook, apparantly Dee and Daz sold their home before they went in so they are hardly destitute.I was wondering why Dee and Maxine got along so well but I see now they have similar personalities.Glad the underdogs got something as well as the brothers
