i HATED angie until the last 2 weeks and LOVED ben until the last 2 weeks.... does the Tall Poppy Syndrome really exist?

Suddenly im hoping the 'mean girls' get their just desserts and that the underdogs pull thru and win

i still think ben is fantastic entertainment value, but id rather angie (who i really dont like at all) last longer than him.

im baffled at my own thoughts - do we really just want to cut the powerful down to size?

They're all annoying now, but if I had to choose probably Layla just out of pure spite cause she won the car & it would PISS OFF Ben, Michael etc to the max....

This is the first year I haven't had a favourite HM, they all suck... some more than others...

I see tall poppy syndrome as objecting to the way someone is standing out because of their excellence, and wanting them brought down to an ordinary level. Wanting someone brought down because they seem powerful - maybe too powerful - is a bit different I think.

Personally I've felt a bit of a shift in my preferences in the same way as you. I put it down to the way that Ben has been pretty smug lately which is a bit of a turn off, and because the nasty impression left by Angie's brawling attitude in the pool has worn off a bit with time - letting some of her better qualities get a bit of air time - and also because she's been shown as more vulnerable. It wouldn't make me want to keep her in the house ahead of him if I was in there though. I'm sure he'd be a more enjoyable housemate.

I still wouldn't vote to save Ben this close to the end though, not now that I've found out that will put me in one or the other of uan's categories of horrible people.

I think we're seeing a more vulnerable side to Angie and also seeing how Ben, Layla, Michael, Zoe and to an extent Josh all ganged up against her, I think made some people step back and have a re-think. We never really saw Angie bitch to an extent we saw Ben's group do. We heard more that she was a bitch, by HM's who blamed her for them being bitchy, but don't seem to see they've been proved liars as they happily bitch now and seem glad to follows Ben's bitch lead. So the dynamics have changed and where it was Angie pretty much being pointed out as mega bitch, we can see that that really wasn't the case. She was one of many!

I also think the bitching has brought out the fact that none of the HM's are sweet little darlings all nicey nice. Again, Angie was seen as rough and nasty while everyone else was seen in a better light. Now that has evened off too, as people see the bad as well as the good of all HM's.

So I think it's a natural reaction to want the ones who act superior and think they are so much better, to fall on their arses, because they haven't actually done anything to show they are actually morally better or nicer people. My least fav HM's were Sam and Estelle and was never a huge fan of Angie, though never hated her. Now I want them to stay, because Ben's group act like they are perfect people who do no wrong. I would like Ben to go, even though I think he is a more interesting HM, because it would totally shake up his group and would love to see how they act. I think though it will be very unlikely he does go.

So glad I am not the only one baffled by my change in HM preferences!

Spooky how I was about to start a topic re the 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' only to find one has already been started. I had intended to point out that: the Tall Poppy Syndrome is rearing its ugly head again.

Estelle: We find all kinds of excuses for 'hating' her, such as... "...she rides around on an imaginary pony..." and, well, what else was there? It's not Estelle's fault that she isn't getting enough air time. The truth is that we 'hate' her because she's intelligent AND she's female. Intelligent females winning prizes? We can't have that - cut her down.

Layla: We find all kinds of excuses for 'hating' her, such as... "she's too fat" - "she has a silly accent" - "she's not the brightest" ...erm... what else? The truth is that we 'hate' her because she's a bloody Pom. A Pom winning our OZ BB competition? Give me a break - get rid of her.

Estelle and Layla are the real 'Tall Poppies' and therefore never stood a chance. How weird is that. I'd feel quite comfortable to have a conversation, dinner, a stroll on the beach and lots of other things with either Estelle or Layla. I can't see myself feeling comfortable in the company of either Angie, Stacey or Zoe ...or the other woman who currently reigns as the alpha dog.

I'm not sure.

Personally I have never needed to cut down the "tall poppy" and have always found it quite sad when a majority turn like that on a person's individual success, for no apparent reason.

My favourite 3 from the beginning have been Ben, Michael and Stacey and that has remained unchanged. As I have got to know them each night, their individual flaws have become more apparent, but that doesn't make me not like them, it just makes me disappointed at times at their behaviour and the choices they have made in the house. When reflecting on how a loved one is affecting my life, I tend to measure their best moments, against their worst, when deciding whether to keep that person in my life. To me Ben, Michael and Ben's best moments far outweigh their worst.

The only housemate of this series I simply couldn't warm to was Sarah. In real life I am not attracted to that "positivity/magic happens/throw it to the universe to answer/righteous vegetarian, type person and I found her irritating.

I have no issue with Estelle herself. I just hate her because she reminds me of my mother. And since Ben isn't around I won't go into detail in order to be psychoanalyzed. :p

For me, I've always disliked Ben and liked Estelle.
But tall poppy doesn't apply to what we're talking about anyway, this is a perceived 'good' vs 'evil' battle.

I was the exact same!! I didn't like Estelle at first and absolutely LOVED Ben and wanted him to win the series but these past few weeks I have changed my tune with him a little bit & Estelle has grown on me a lot, she is so down to earth & a genuinely nice person, I hope she survives this weeks eviction & makes it down to the finale. TEAM ESTELLE <3

Aaaahhhh this is the beauty of Big Brother and one of my favourite parts of watching the show. Sometimes, whenyou least expect it, someone you really don't like will all of a sudden burst your perceptions and all of a sudden you.... gasp! like them!!! I really didn't like angie for a long time but after she got over the whole being nominated beef she started being her true self, and I like her a lot more than the 'populars' who are faking it big time. I often wonder if fate fell a different way and different people were still in the house if your perceptions of them would have stayed the same or not. Sometimes they would have and you would like and hate certain housemates the whole way through (I know with certainty I will hate Michael to the end) but like the angie example people can surprise you and it is because of this you shouldn't hold expectations of people and judge books by their covers. What would the house be like if Ryan was still in there? What if Stacey and Ben had been evicted instead of Ray and Sarah? I am fascinated by the endless possibilities that can happen in our future and the path we build based on our choices. Wouldn't it be amazing to see the outcome if a different branch of the fate tree had been followed? It boggles the mind.

Nighty night!
