Well it's a Product of the fashion of the time. Kylie Minoques wedding dress from when "Scott and Charlene" got married on Neighbours looks horrible now as well, yet was the biggest wedding dress deign seller for 1981! So too with Diana's dress that year... Copies outsold everything else.
