Reality television isn’t traditionally known for producing great role models. In a medium that inflicted upon brought us Blake Garvey, Spencer Pratt and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, we have been hard pressed to find someone we can truly admire. Enter Lisa Clark. The former Big Brother AU housemate has caught our eye for all the right reasons. Her strong sense of self, her commitment to standing up for what she believes in and her trust in true love are only a few of the reasons we love this reality star. Not that this is the only crown she wears. Lisa has become a wildly successful fashion and lifestyle commentator, managing to inject a little love and inspiration into our daily musings with her youtube channel and social media posts, and her recently launched personal blog. Debriefing was lucky enough to chat to Lisa about all things love, dating and fighting the good fight against bullying and self doubt. Check it out below x

You showed incredible strength of character on BB, often standing up for yourself when you felt you had been unfairly treated. Is this something you have always done, or is it something you have had to practice? Was is more difficult knowing the public was watching?I have always stuck up for myself in situations that I felt were unjust or unfair, it possibly comes from being bullied quite severely when I was in primary school. Now I am confident and have a voice I owe it to myself to stand up, stand strong and be counted. To be honest after 3 days you forget you are on a television show, you assimilate quite quickly into your new “home” plus you don’t actually think anyone at home is watching – its a very odd frame of mind you have while you are living within the constraints of the Big Brother house.


One of the men in the house picked on your physical appearance, and during the subsequent conversation you told him, “I don’t have men like you in my life.” What kind of men do you surround yourself with? What kind of behaviours should women stop tolerating?
I have always been a bit of a tomboy and I have been lucky enough to have some amazing male friends who are like family. I have always had strong men in my life, men that have taught me about myself and life lessons that at the time were sometimes difficult to understand, but that I am thankful happened because they shaped me into a street smart young lady of whom I am extremely proud to be. They are the brothers I never had. Woman need to stop tolerating anything or anyone that doesn’t lift them up, anyone that tries to dim their light or let them think that they are not beautiful, individual, amazing humans with flaws, quirks, scars and souls. Relationships whether they are sexual or friendships shouldn’t be predominantly hard work.

More recently you have felt pressure of the limelight, in particular with the media attacking a red carpet wardrobe malfunction. Have you dealt with bullying in the past? How has it changed since becoming a public figure?In primary school I was bullied quite severely. I would beg to stay home from school so I didn’t have to face the kids that made my days so very hard. It definitely impacted my social skills and by the time I entered high school I was to shy to try and make friends. It wasn’t until year 9 that I started to find my feet in the world.

What advice would you give young women that are fighting their own battles with bullies, or self doubt? How do you stay confident?I would tell them that this will pass. These people that you think are “cool” or are better than you because they sit in their little cliques judging, name calling or generally making your school life hard are actually the people you will look back at in years to come and think “wow that was the girl that made my life hell.” Bullies individually are no where near as strong when they are out of their groups and they are actually the insecure ones because the truth is if they were happy and secure with who they are they wouldn’t be picking on you. Always remember if anyone is trying to pull you down it is because you are already above them.


Confidence comes in waves, we will all at one point question things about ourselves or our appearances – that is just life and we are human. We shouldn’t run away from it, we should embrace it. For each time your lack of confidence waivers there will be so many more times that you feel empowered, beautiful and confident and these are the moments you should live for.

How has social media changed the dating game?If a friend of mine is dating someone we will stalk their social media pages until we end up on their brothers, girlfriends, sisters husbands families page. It is just what we as females do. It has really taken away the element of surprise when meeting and being courted by someone new when with the click of a button you now know where they last holidayed, their family unit and if they like to go out to much..

Is it ever okay to lie to spare a partners feelings or avoid an argument?
It depends on the lie, I am a terrible liar and pride myself on being totally honest – sometimes too honest. It really depends on the situation.

What is the sweetest thing a man has ever done for you?My boyfriend does sweet things for me all the time, I think the small things count daily rather than one large grand gesture every once in a while

How important is sex in a relationship?
Extremely, sharing that sort of love with someone forms an unbreakable bond that is so special and unique. Love and making love are VERY important

What is something men should just STOP DOING?
Trying so hard! Conversation should flow naturally and organically. Talking yourself up or using cheesy pickup lines does not work. EVER.

What is one thing you truly love about yourself?
I love that I am a lover; I love to give love and in return receive it. I love that I am a little rough around the edges and I am extremely loyal.

Is there a woman you know, or know of that is paving the way or doing great things for women?
There are so many amazing woman out there but I must give a special shout out to my amazingly brave friend Alex Isaac. She is only 30 years old and earlier this year, after her big sister’s diagnosis of breast cancer, she found out she too carries the BRCA gene which increases her own risk of breast cancer by up to 80 per cent.


It also causes ovarian cancer. Alex had a preventative double mastectomy in February and will soon need to have her ovaries removed as well, she has since gone through IVF to remove the rogue gene and therefore stopped the chance of passing it on to her children and her children’s children and so forth.


Alex is now 8.5 months pregnant, I am so blown away by her bravery. She modelled with her sister a few months ago in Cleo to show that their scars are beautiful and part of the journey to where they are today. She is one of my heroes.
