i think it's just that we don't understand the significance of what "yank" really means because its not part of our history. I thought it was just a term for all Americans (and a quick wiki check says that most outside of the US call Americans Yanks informally). It reminds me of when a tv show here had people dressed in black-face doing a jackson5 skit and the uproar it created. The average aussie didn't understand the fuss, because they don't realise the sordid and painful history behind black-face in it's US origins. So please don't be offended by anything we chat about here, just enlighten us as you did, and we will all take it on board. And Welcome.

No stirring the pot. In Australia a Yank is an American, most Aussies would have no idea that only the northern states are traditionally home to 'yanks'. You've all been Yanks to us for as long as we've had an informal name for you. Even those who do know would call you all Yanks, in Australia the word does not have the same meaning as it does in the USA.

If Inigo wanted to offend you she would have called you a Seppo, which is a diminutive of old rhyming slang; Septic Tank rhymes with Yank, and septic tank gets shortened to seppo. Not very nice, but if you hear an Aussie call a Yank a seppo then you want to be offended.

While we are educating what the hell is 'Homecoming', why does everyone go nuts for it and what makes it a big deal for gridiron games?

I wasn't taking offense...just trying to explain. It's complicated everywhere around the world and everyone tries so darn hard not to step on toes...which I get so confused I just try to never use any race, ethnicity, region, religion, etc. As a Cherokee Catholic Texan divorced single mother living in environmental protective state of Colorado, in the oil/gas biz (wylie...wyliecat...wildcatter)...I am a true American...a big pot of contradictions...with a freedom to be exactly who i am. Just hoping "American" will rub off and the "yank" will drop off...as none of us fit into one category in any spot of the world.

Sorry off topic...now back to page 661 to continue catch-up...drew/tully, ed-gay?, jade know? ed/jade? ben/tim- graceland and the jungle?? i love this forum.

Any way....It's not offensive to anyone I know (It probably is moreso in the South US though (I've lived in the Northern US pretty much my entire life)....You will probably hear anyone especially from Texas get offended by it...I don't want to go into the whole history, but Texas especially prides themselves on their Confederate heritage and I could see where calling them Yankees might possibly be a little offensive...I'm not though, but I can see where Wylie may be)

Homecoming is a weekend when past graduates return for reunions and the watch the sporting events at the Alma Mater.

Yes it must be a southern thing. I just sms'ed my sister (25 years in LA) and she said she has never heard or used that in derogatory term. She uses it as a term of endearment/fun

Drew and Tully seem to still be together, a paper here ran a story last week saying they had split up and got Drews name wrong. So some great investigation done there LOL.
Ed is not gay, but I think people like to joke around that he is. He and Jade are done.
Yes Ben and Tim will be heading to the States and South America soon, not sure if Drew is going though.

I haven't either.....I'm just trying to put myself in Wylie's shoes and trying to see why she could see it as offensive...that's all

Sorry I'm done with this little debate thing....On to more pressing matters like when will we see photos of Drew, Boog, Ed, etc. at the Jeep Port Sea Polo they all said they were going...

I thought it was just another vote where a pretty/bitchy girl gets to become homecoming queen. Well that was my impression from watching American movies/TV shows. Thanks for the info :)

Yeah, as a Southerner I don't like being called a Yank. Which is Yankee, which are people from the northern states. If you visit the south and someone calls you that, it is NOT a compliment...But I've noticed that most other countries call us that and you can usually tell by what they're saying if they meant to offend or not, so I try to ignore it, but I do notice it and cringe a bit.

I wonder if people from England mind when you call them poms? Or at least I think thats what you call them, lol.
 
Even Boog, Jazz and NicckEd showed up for the event but no Tully, not good for her career (aside from whatever can be assumed about the status of their relationship).

Nice picture, looks like they are having fun, but that hat makes Boog look like the Flying Nun. I kinda love it.
