Competition has across the ages induced better performance across all stratas. Undisputed.
The "we are all winners" approach is doomed to produce a soulless, inspirationless and guileless generation.
Evolution at its darwinist core even proves this to the most dummy of dummies.

When I was in year 7, my father got transferred to the UK.
I went to a reputed grammar school after obtaining a scholarship. The competition was intense. It had a challenging entry level exam even to get in.
At the end of every term, an assembly was held for each year level. And for each subject, they announced and counted students from the worst and their grades to the best.
Now. That. Was a bit extreme.
Lucky that I lucked myself to the top on most subjects.
But competition is healthy. As is being marked against your peers. It inspires.

It was dear fellow. Teachers had to be addressed as "masters" and wore flowing black robes. Really old school boarding school type 50's tones.
I was only there for year 7 and returned to oz for year 8.
But strangely, i have fond memories. Think it helped me form what I am today.
