New Off Topic Thread ..... (Everyone: please be nice)

I never had twitter/x because by the time I thought of getting it it just sounded toxic so I just didn't bother jumping in, but I have been wondering about joining bluesky. The only social media I have is facebook (mostly for messaging a couple of people and marketplace) and you tube. - Even on social media I lurk more than talk so not sure if I would use it or not.
It was always good for developing stories like disasters, where you could get photos from people as it was happening, and usually before the news networks had enough to go on. Also good for NRL players' sexual improprieties, leaked photos etc, could always find them there. Or so I'm told.

Hopefully the days of live tweets being aired on live TV shows is well and truly over. At 18 million, Bluesky has a long way to reach twitter's 300 million at it peak, but if it can get to 100 million that would be great. It has been held back by big accounts not having the guts to walk away from their huge Twitter followings, but that's starting to change now. The Guardian & Observer have moved across to Bluesky, and with any luck, more news outlets will follow.

I find it interesting to get a perspective other than mainstream media. Some journalists/pundits were attending all the trump/walz/harris/vance rallies snd live posting comments and clips. And that wasn‘t really readily available any other way.

I joined 10 days ago and already have half the followers I had on Twitter and the difference in engagement in just a week is really noticeably.

6m have joined since I did - a coincidence I'm sure. :)

Funny you should say that because i learnt in university social studies class that academics and journalists love using twitter for that very reason.

Bluesky seems rather boring and pointless. Just a bunch of people agreeing with each other and singing Kumbaya whilst handing out flowers at airports.
