Excuse my ignorance but is Matt Preston a cook or a food critique?

He is a food critic, I believe, but despite my extensive reading, until Masterchef I had never heard of him. He does have good food knowledge and a bit like me a very expensive tummy.

Not impressing the judges much either. They didn't really give Mimi a hard time, perhaps they expected more of him?
