Last movie you saw

I don't mind the Pocahontas comparison because it helps put the themes of the movie into a real perspective. Reshaping an old story into a new environment is nothing new, and there's nothing wrong in doing so.
 
Well I've never seen pocohontas and after I watched Avatar I did mention in my review that I felt like Cameron was inspired by native indians etc. I laughed when I kept reading about Pocohontas and avatar. How clever am I to pick that up without knowing anything about that movie, lol. Anyway it just shows how strong that message in the film is. I wonder too whether people have assocated a children's movie with an adults movie and that's where the negative comments come from.

As well I was expecting a more meatier movie, more action in terms of blood and guts etc. More violent if anything, more graphic, more, ummm I'm not doing a very good job of explaining it but say Mad Max, Terminator, rough and tough styling. The major fans of action movies (males) and yes, females like me, maybe thinking the movie was soft in that way.

I personally loved it, hubby not so thrilled, he said the visuals were good but he didn't think much of the story line.
 
... a hundred years later. Pandora is a mainly human colony, with a few sad blue smurfs with alcohol issues and living on the fringes of society. What remains of the native flora and fauna is protected in small National Parks.

James Cameron seems to have lost his taste for darker material, going by avatar and titanic. It'd be nice if he does make another darker film at some point. As far as action, yeah more is good, but I don't know what they could do really? The Navi don't really have weapons, and they only fought back when they had huge numbers, a planned attack, ect. So couldn't have done much otherwise with that. Although there was a fair bit of action, just not the whole, people fighting kind.

I imagine in the sequels, it'll be hard to come up with much, the navi still will be primitive. All the same barriers for action scenes would still be there.

A few offbeat ones for you. I've just been to New Zealand, which means movies and cricket. Caught some of the test match at my favourite ground, the Basin.

On the plane over, I watched "The Young Victoria". Not much to say really, it was a nice pleasant movie, perfect for G and T....and I tend to go for the grog on aircraft (even more than usual). Came away with a renewed admiration for Victoria, and it's pretty cool if you are into history generally, 7/10. Albert and Victoria were good together in that movie.

Last night in NZ, I watched an oldie and an eccentricie.....it was "West World", with Yuhl Brynner (how do you spell the dude's name?) and James Brolin, Dick Van Patten. From a Michael Crichton book, and it's bascially the Jurassic Park plot but with robots as cowboys, knights and Romans, instead of dinosaurs, that are running amok at futuristic resort. It's kind of weird having a movie that is supposed to be in a futuristic time but with 1973 fashions. So this was great fun, 7/10.

On the plane home, I couldn't decide between "Amelia", about the pioneering female aviator, which would have been very interesting, and on the other hand "Tigerland" (about a bunch of marines training for Vietnam in Louisiana). In the end, an early Colin Farrell movie (2000) was too hard to resist. And I was duly rewarded, Farrell in a buzz saw haircut, those eyes, and a scene when he's in the shower. 11/10. Otherwise, not much intellingence in the storyline at all. :D

His name is spelt "Yul" That was a cool movie. The sequel Future world was not so great. In that there is another amusement park called "Future World" and in that the robots have managed to take over the park and are copying key important people to replace.... We never find out why and for what because a hero saves the day.

It's been many, many years since I have seen West World
 
I quite like late 60s early 70s films actually. If the sequel doesn't live up to the original, that would be a little like "Planet of the Apes" where the immediate sequels were fairly dire (don't even get me started on the Mark Wahlberg version), but the original is fantastic.

Mind you, "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" was passable, if for no other reason than the surprise ending ("All things bright and beautiful")
 
I'm going to the Melbourne Queer Film Festival saturday, woohoo films on at the Fed Square centre for moving pics can't wait, I haven't ever seen anything screen there yet. Some really interesting movies.
 
Stephen Sommers has been working on a remake of "When Worlds Collide" for quite some time now. Just looked up and it has a 2012 release date.

Could be good, He did the Mummy, and that was a classic. He also did the second one.. not so much haha... But Van Helsing was flawed but fun, and GI Joe was good silly childish fun and action. Just hope he aims a bit more at the adult crowd than that.
 
The Bounty Hunter oh dear.. it wasn't very good, Gerard & Jen had NO chemistry! The script was really bad and it was just tedious. 4/10
 
Supposedly they have chemistry off-screen though. They are making sulphuric acid together.
 
Alice in Wonderland, decent film i suppose although it definitely felt more like The Never ending Story rather than Alice in Wonderland or an LOTR lite. 6/10
 
I wanted to go to "Alice in Wonderland" tonight, but it was vetoed. I do think Tim Burton and Johnny Depp need to be surgically removed from each other's films, but I think the 3D would be quite spectacular in that movie. :g:
 
I think Johnny Depp and Tim Burton need to be surgically removed and Helena Bonham Carter needs to stop taking on every role her boyfriend gives her, i'm tired of that trio, Tim needs new talent.
