Freddie was endearing and funny imo too, and that swung it. Far more so, than comparatively bland, runner up AFL *hero* Barry Hall. Then, there was issues-ridden, yet also endearing-post-douchery winner, AFL *hero* Fev, with bland runner up NRL *hero* Paul Harragon.
In the absence of a broadly endearing, Big Personality, Master Entertainer & Strategic Manipulator (Carson comes closest imo), a sporting background probably provides an aspect of very good training for this 'competition', as well as a LOT of inherent *hero* worship across the nation.... almost automatic permission to play in the finals (unless they FU badly).
Carson (wildcard) along with Casey have endearing and funny in spades as big characters imo, also Naz a little less so, but their appeal would be narrower, and they'd need to work harder to overcome existing hero worship. So Dane, keep doing what you're not doing, and make it easier for them...

Perhaps they were much lesser loved exceptions with tough sporting competition, out in the first week?
I wouldn't have considered either of those sports woman to have the scale of 'hero' love enjoyed by "Lisa Curry".... maybe she has to work harder to endear and entertain viewers? ... Laurina, the polarising underdog with stars in her eyes, managed to hungrily do it.
