I'm a Celebrity feeds on 'nasty women' like Keira Maguire and Tziporah Malkah

by Kerry Sackville

Last night, I curled up on the couch and watched a woman sobbing in terror as she dangled over a precipice. Later, I watched a very vulnerable, overweight woman being mocked by other people in her group.

It was I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here, of course, and this is ratings gold. The two women, Keira Maguire and Tziporah Malkah, are the current drawcards of the show because there is nothing more exciting than a sobbing, vulnerable woman.

I'm a Celebrity is little short of torture porn. A dozen human beings are sent to an arena in the jungle. They wear uniforms, are deprived of food and material comforts, and are denied any contact with the outside world. To get food, they must compete in "Tucker Trials", each more terrifying and disgusting than the last. They are trapped in coffins with snakes. Forced to eat larvae and brains. Climb across high wires over ravines. Sleep overnight in a cave.

And of course, what we want as the audience is reaction. We don't want the celebs to participate stoically in the trials. We want them to scream and cry. We want them to vomit up the larvae.

And what do we want to see in the camp? Conflict. We want distress. We want bitchiness. We want factions. We want cliques.

So who do we need? Women. Yes, the men are interesting characters – Steve Price and his stuffed-toy phobia is enormously entertaining – but the truly emotive ones are the women. The professional entertainers (Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Tegan Martin) and sportswomen (Lisa Curry) are disappointingly calm and composed, so we need wild cards like Maguire and Malkah.

Now remember, neither Maguire nor Malkah are actually "celebrities". Maguire was a contestant on one reality TV show. Malkah, formerly known as Kate Fischer and once a model and actor who was engaged to James Packer, is a trainee nurse who returned to the public eye only after being stalked and outed by paparazzi.

But they serve our purposes well. It is the very fact that they are not celebrities – neither appears to be media trained or image conscious – that makes them so watchable. They are themselves, and gloriously human, as they lay their fears, distress and anger on the table for all to see.

And we viewers lap it up.

We relish seeing women sob on TV, and if they are unlikeable, even more so. Both Maguire and Malkah have been demonised on the show by clever editing and the other contestants, which makes it even more fun to enjoy their suffering.

Maguire is outspoken and aggressive, and fantastically confident, which are not acceptable qualities in a female. Malkah is brash and overweight, and seems not to care what other people think, which makes her another nasty woman.

And so, when we see Maguire sobbing uncontrollably through four hideous challenges in a row, we laugh and cheer, and we vote her in to do yet another Tucker Trial. And when Malkah wanders around camp in her underwear in the middle of the night, or eats under a sheet to avoid "toxic people", we sit up in our seats in anticipation. The closer the two get to breakdown, the more excited we get.

"But they choose to do it!" you shout. "They can leave whenever they want!" Well, yes, that is true. But do we judge them for taking the opportunity to earn an income, or ourselves for enjoying their suffering?

We love to demonise women like Maguire and Malkah. They don't fit with our ideas about womanhood, so we tear them down. Maguire is too feisty, Malkah too weird. Maguire speaks her mind, Malkah likes alt-right commentators. Maguire has (gasp!) had her lips enlarged, Malkah is too fat.

But both these women are human beings. They might have opinions we don't agree with, or character traits we don't like, but they're still people. Delighting in their suffering is not quantifiably worse than the citizens of Panem delighting in the fight to the death Hunger Games in the fantasy series. Relishing other people's humiliation and pain is ugly. It reflects the worst in ourselves.

Now, of course, unlike in The Hunger Games, the contestants of I'm a Celebrity don't die at the end of the show. But every season, the stakes are raised. The food challenges get more repulsive, the snakes get bigger, the ropes get ridiculously high. The fear levels rise. The panic increases. At some point, someone will break. It is only a matter of time.

And wouldn't we love it to be a nasty woman. The ratings would go through the roof.

Sorry, I didn't drink the koolaid, one persons opinion does not make fact.
Tonight I enjoyed the birthday, ribsgate, Ash eating the vegemite cake, the girls chatting about boys, the boys exercising, and Lisa helping two other girls who were having trouble coping. Not sure if that author watches the same show.

Er.... It's an opinion piece.

I think a quick glance back through the last oh, 80 pages or so of the current show thread will demonstrate that people really enjoy slamming Tziporah and Keira. I don't think she's commenting on our thread, really, presumably on what has been expressed in other press pieces and on social media in general.

This article proves just how batshit crazy and unhinged Tziporah is:

TRIPLE M’S Grill Team has vowed to never again interview Tziporah Malkah after a disastrous chat on radio this morning.

The I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! contestant, who was formerly known as Kate Fischer, spoke to the breakfast radio show after being voted out of the jungle last night.

They welcomed the 43-year-old by playing a montage of some of her controversial comments from her time on the reality TV show, which for some reason didn’t seem to please Malkah.

“Yeah, thanks, great welcome,” she said sarcastically, “I really feel very warmly invited by that”.

It was an awkward start and the interview only got worse when co-host Matty Johns asked Malkah about Kris Smith, whom she clashed with in the jungle and labelled an anti-semite.

“While he’s got that sort of charming, ‘I’m just a working class lad from Manchester thing,’ he’s actually quite aggressive and gets bored easily so he gets sort of nasty,” Malkah said to the radio hosts.

The former model then added, “he’s an OK bloke, he’s not an anti-semite at all”.

A confused Johns asked, “why did you say that to him?”

“Because he pretended that I was in front of the dartboard and I said I wasn’t in front of the dartboard on purpose,” Malkah explained.

“I thought if you’re going to throw stupid accusations at me, I’ll throw a stupid accusation at you. Saying I’m standing in front of the dartboard on purpose, that’s a terrible claim ... You can’t claim that about someone.”

The Triple M hosts argued that accusing someone of standing in front of a dartboard is “minimal” compared to labelling someone an anti-semite, but Malkah didn’t agree.

“Not to me, I take my darts seriously,” she said.

“If you take your darts as seriously as I do, I took great offence to that.”

A clearly unimpressed Matty Johns continued to press Malkah, saying, “But Tziporah, you love stirring the pot. That’s what you do”.

“No I don’t,” she fired back, “how would you know that? Do you know me?”

“Watching you, my observation is you would stir the pot and then you would go, ‘oh why are you turning on me?’” Johns said.

“What pot?” asked an argumentative Malkah, “What pot did I stir?”

Co-host Mark Geyer tried to get the interview back on track by asking Malkah if she’s keen to “rejoin the TV world” after her time on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!

“Oh ... I don’t know,” she said, “does it mean I have to talk to you people all the time?”

And with that, the Triple M hosts had had enough.

“No, but believe us, this will be the first and last time you speak to us,” Gus Worland said.

“OK, good,” Malkah replied.

As they wrapped up the interview, Worland started to promote the next episode of the Ten show, saying, “To watch all the other celebrities who actually sound like half decent people ...”

“Oh she’s playing a role,” Geyer said to his co-host.

“I don’t think she plays a role,” Worland said, “I think that’s exactly who she is and she’s awful.”

Malkah’s appearance on Triple M was just one of a number of bizarre interviews she gave on breakfast radio this morning.

Here are some highlights from the others:

• Speaking to Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS FM, Malkah claimed that Steve Price watched her as she showered in the jungle.

“I didn’t know he was watching until Tom Arnold told me, ‘Yeah, he watched.’ And then when I did an interview with Steve on stage, because he’s about the height of my breasts, I did notice during Jungle Radio that Steve was looking at my erect nipples because I was wearing a wet T-shirt.”

In response to Malkah’s claim, a Network Ten spokesperson told news.com.au: “The shower is covered on one side to allow the celebrities privacy and it’s highly unlikely that they are able to see one another.”

• An interview with Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa was a blast from the past for Malkah, who briefly dated Fitzy in the early 2000s, back when he was a footballer.

Speaking to the pair, she proceeded to take credit for Fitzy’s media career, recounting that she used to encourage him to get into television back when he was a footballer – advice she said he ignored at the time.

“Finally you’ve taken MY good advice, and done yourself a favour. Obviously you were wrong and I was right and here we are. I’m the one that’s had to eat [censored] in the jungle for the past four weeks, and you’re the one making, what, close to a million dollars a year interviewing me.”

Wippa then asked Malkah if she remembered much about his co-host’s kissing skills.

“I don’t think we did much foreplay… I think we were just [Censored] when we did it,” she said.

Wrapping up the interview after only a few minutes, Malkah chastised Fitzy for “bragging” about their past relationship.

“You’ve been bragging about me on radio, don’t think I haven’t heard. I’ll speak to your mum and your missus, but I’ve got to wrap it up now – you’re not very important and I’ve got other people to talk to.”

• Speaking to Hit 105’s Stav, Abby & Osher, Malkah took offence when she was asked about her relationship with James Packer.

“Are you that shallow?” Malkah said after co-host Matty Acton asked if she’d been in touch with Packer recently, “It was 20 years ago!”

“No offence,” Acton said, “but that’s why you’re relevant today because of that relationship and everyone’s interested in it.”

A shocked Malkah responded with, “No offence? Australians think they can say anything as long as they go ‘no offence.’ Actually, I have achieved quite a lot on my own, thank you very much, and my story is very interesting without him included.”

Malkah wrapped up the interview not long after the exchange.

• Speaking to Nova’s Chrissie, Sam & Browny, Malkah was asked about a mystery man that she sent secret messages to by applying lip balm on camera.

“I have someone that I met 30 years ago and we hooked up when we were young ratbags and we haven’t seen each other since,” Malkah said.

The two recently got in touch again but Malkah’s not sure if it will lead to a relationship.

“Whether there is actual chemistry chemistry as in man, woman, penis, vagina, penis, vagina, penis, vagina. Can I say that on morning radio? So that might not work out as in penis, vagina, penis, vagina, penis, vagina but it might work out as in friendship.”

Not slamming Tziporah, but if you don't want to be perceived as awful, don't act awfully.

I did laugh at the allegation that Steve Price perved on her, as if.

Oh I didn't think it was referring to us here on the board. It's just that I don't relate to what she obviously thinks 'we' the audience in general get out of this show and Keira and Tziporah in particular. I guess for some it's accurate though.

Ok, I think that pretty much kills the theory that Tziporah has, from the time she was photographed, being very cunningly engineering a return to the media.

That opinion piece is stupid.
I like them having fun, or talking serious stuff more than anything.

And re torture or whatever, i prefer watching the guys freak out - Warnie, I loved watching that fat ego squirm with the spider

In contrast, Lisa had me gripped, i loathe spiders and would not usually be able to watch, but she was awesome.
Horrible, horrible thing to do, and so far, far more challenging than what Warnie got.

I was unable to turn away, she was fascinating, you could literally see her pushing through terror, you could see what made her an elite athlete, that brave focus was sensational.

Opinion piece person had her opinion in place before she watched. Nat is the biggest screamer there.

And if RTV people & weirdos chose to boost their limited fame on this that's their decision

Well I didn't mean to start a war! I was depressed after leaving the thread last night and looked up Tzippy on the Goog to see what the media had to say about her exit, etc, and that sprang up. At first I was a bit shocked that Kerry Sackville referred to T and K as 'nasty women' in the headline and even more depressed, and then I continued reading and I found what she had to say quite interesting. That is all! Carry on.

Ok, I think that pretty much kills the theory that Tziporah has, from the time she was photographed, being very cunningly engineering a return to the media.

And the return to the media has now ended.

Ok, I think that pretty much kills the theory that Tziporah has, from the time she was photographed, being very cunningly engineering a return to the media.
I don't know who had that theory, I always thought she might have engineered it all for the money the show pays, and the magazine, and to lose the weight. From what I've seen and heard of her interviews today, she hates the media stuff flat out.

The problem with Bondi Vet is you never know if it's a new episode or a repeat, they seem to play them on a loop. I also think it's ridiculous that they are looking for a new Bondi Vet. It's Dr Chris, without him, just axe the show.
