Frocks, Frolics and Fotos

I think it's cool too but I see it as much as an artform as a garment, although I have seen photos of people wearing much stranger things.
 
Love it, how gorgeous would that look without the flouncey dress with a pare of very expensive french boots
 
I'd like to meet the persons who actually put their blood, sweat and tears into such an intricate piece. I'm sure we all know without their ateliers they would be nothing. Some of the top ateliers are getting on too, it will be very interesting to see what happens in some of these fashion houses over the next decade or so.
 
I thought the same thing, ichi. It would take a rare talent to be able to actually make that. It's knitted and crocheted and seems to break all of the normal rules of yarnwork. It's one thing to think up something like that, it's a whole different type of brilliance to actually make it.
 
They had a series on SBS2 recently called The Day Before and it went behind the scenes 48 hours before fashion shows for Gaultier / Lagerfield and I can't remember the other 2 (four part series) All the ateliers and specialist designers / tailors / cutters / furriers (sp?) were all amazing but baby boomer age and older. A lot seem like a dying art as well.
 
Ok call me weird but I love it. You couldn't wear it in the real world but it's gorgeous. I also have a thing for grey, it's one of the best colours for me :P

But like it is there, as like a winter wedding dress? I'd absolutely do that!
 
Mmmmmm it would be lovely in white.
I saw that Lagerfield show - fascinating, and those gorgeous sewing women were so cute with the ever ready needle hovering.
 
Sadly fashion designer was my first career choice, I used to sketch stuff for hours all through high school........I had such dreams.

And I tried, and they killed my dreams. Back then, Oz didn't really have much, old designers there were a couple. I interviewed for reputable people who stole my sketch books. i worked at places that - well they all just ripped off overseas stuff, rooms full of samples from places we ádjusted' changed a tiny bit then mass produced.
It was very weird, and they were all either hard nosed business people with lots of nepotism and little talent (meanwhile peeps with designer and cutting training were doing dogs jobs) - or they were totally nuts. It was common to hear of suicide attempts and other crazy breakdowns, they were drama queens really never heard of an actual deaths.
 
Sounds like Donna's storyline on Neighbours, maybe one of the writers went through what you did.

Fashion Babylon by Imogen Edwards-Jones is a nice insight into some of the more dodgy sides of fashion.
 
You know it's quite sad that really talented people had no real chance then, I still have a bestie I made back then, she is an awesome cutter/designer and she works for Big W.............
She used to make these amazing dresses using old jeans, made me one with the zipper front part as the bodice, and this big swirling skirt cut on the cross, fabulous.
 
also sounds like nicoles storyline on home and away ;)

i love dressmaking and scrapbooking and all sorts of designing but ive resigned myself to the fact that it will only ever be a hobby. thats why i studied and trained in enviro science and im making a good career out of that "skill" which i do enjoy but if i could live my life anyway i liked i would own a little craft studio and sell my designs :)

kxk;) I think I owned one of those denim dresses! Mine was sleeveless, sort of tunic\pinafore top and made up with different (patchwork) large pieces of different colour denim,mainly faded, the skirt part was quite full.
 
Nicole Kidman's son Conor has a mohawk now :D

She probably made it, she's awesome. Mine was special, no patches, big swirling pale denim skirt. Guys loved that dress, I would without fail get at least one comment - they found it sexy that my head came out of a fly. They used to be sold in Chapel st. I saw the patchy ones, I liked mine better.
