That's true. It's not like he continually pines for Susan, any more than his many other companions. He was particularly close to Romana and Sarah Jane too. That's why I think Susan has to be a plot point rather than a throwaway reference. Funny that the picture was in black & white, you'd think with all his access to technology he'd have had a colour camera in the sixties

...well... from what I got from the episode is that The Doctor and Nardole have been at that University for about 50 years or so guarding that 'vault'... (it wouldn't surprise me if The Doctor has had John Simm's version of the dead 'Master' locked up in it since he died in David Tennant's arms all of those years ago... hence his apparent return in future episodes perhaps?)... just a theory on my part though...
...and in that 50 odd years The Doctor has possibly reflected on all of the past companions and some of their deaths (Clara's in particular as of late) which in turn has had him doting on just his 'family' so to speak... his 'wife' River and his 'grand daughter' Susan... (why no photo of his clone 'daughter' that's whirling around in Space somewhere?) perhaps he intended not to have companions anymore... just a pet/man servant/robot in Nardole instead perhaps?... but Bill has him completely intrigued and he is succumbing to allowing himself yet another companion after such a long break possibly?... again... just a theory...
...besides... The Doctor likes having companions around him to tell him just how good he is to serve his ego lol!... (he won't get that from Bill though will he?)... lol!...

...I think that Susan is a definite plot point for sure... (read my next oncoming post that will be below a bit later)... hahaha!... it's even funnier that Susan's black and white photo was a BBC publicity shot from the 60's too lol!... what?... couldn't they have asked Carole Ann Ford for a more informal happy snap from one of her own personal family albums?... I'm sure that she would've supplied them one... just saying lol!... cheers.

Re Susan's pic @Mr Stickyfingers ....it needed to be that old familiar photo, for those of us who really have no clue who Susie is, I do recognise that pic....I haven't seen much of the very early DW, mostly just Tom Baker & Pete's timelines, with some of Pertwee - I hated him and didn't even get it was DW when watching his stuff repeated and programmed by my eldest brother's control of the TV.
I was a baby and that era seemed like some shitty spy show - poor imitation of the Avengers, TV was quite weird then really.
I got into real watching as Tom declined, and Leela took my fancyAnd it was spacey and i could get it, and since I was a kid, I loved K-9

Peter Capaldi wants Susan back on Doctor Who and you won't believe what she looks like now
STAR of Doctor Who Peter Capaldi has revealed that he'd love to bring back a character from the original series in the 60s - The Doctor's granddaughter Susan. But what does Carole Ann Ford, who played the part, look like today?
The revival of the BBC series often gives nostalgic nods to the original Doctor Who, which ran from 1963 to 1989. The series - and its spin-off audio plays, novels and TV shows - has even brought characters back to the show once or twice.
And now Capaldi, who plays the twelfth incarnation of The Doctor, wants to bring back the character's granddaughter Susan, who was portrayed by Carole Anne Ford from 1963 to 1964.
The actress is now 75, and so is in fact older than her on-screen grandfather by nearly 20 years (Capaldi is 58). It's unclear how this would work if she did make a comeback, given that those from Doctor Who's family don't appear to age.
So what has she been up to since? And what does she look like now?
Since appearing on the show as a 24-year-old, the actress has appeared in a variety of theatre roles, on celebrity quiz shows and in films such as The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery. Her most notable film role was in fact before Doctor Who, when she played Bettina and blind girl in the 1962 movie The Day of the Triffids.
She left the original Doctor Who series in an episode titled The Dalek Invasion of Earth, which saw her cease travelling with The Doctor (then played by William Hartnell) to run off with a resistance fighter from the future. She did return to the role for 1983’s 20th anniversary episode The Five Doctors, and in the years since has appeared in various novels and audio plays in the franchise, as well as the charity special Dimensions in Time. She also took part in the 50th anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors.
Her acting roles since the 1970s have been sparse, and she was criticised by fans when she took a role as a prostitute in an episode of a detective series because she had strayed away from the character she played in Doctor Who.
She said in an interview at the time: “I had the most searing letters from parents of small children who had been allowed to stay up late to watch this, because I was in it and they thought it was going to be something akin to Doctor Who. They were saying, 'How dare you do this? You are a role model.'"
In 2013, the same year of the 50th anniversary, she blamed the show for her lacklustre career. Talking to the Telegraph, she said: "I must say that when I left Doctor Who, I was filled with… not loathing, but I was incredibly annoyed because I wanted to do more television and films and the only thing that people could ever see me in was a recreation of what I had done. A Susan clone. Some kind of weird teenager.
"I wanted to do work that would disconnect me from Doctor Who. That is a very difficult thing to accomplish, as many other actors who have played the companions have found out.”
She went on to out and out claim that the show was solely responsible for ruining her career, saying: “In no small way. Definitely. Nothing shook it off. Nothing.”
In stark contrast, she has recently taken a u-turn with her opinions of the show, now saying she would happily return. During a visit to the set in 2014, Capaldi floated the idea of her returning - something she said she would "love" to do.
"[Capaldi] started saying, ‘Oh, you should come back!’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to come back!’ He was running around the TARDIS saying, ‘She’s got to come back! She’s got to come back'," said the actress.

If there's one companion Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi would love to step into the TARDIS again on Doctor Who, it's the beloved Time Lord's granddaughter herself, Susan Foreman.
That's what the actress who played the character, Carole Ann Ford, revealed in a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine (that would be issue #487). The woman who played Susan from the very first episode of the BBC series, "An Unearthly Child," back in November of 1963, until "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" in 1964, said:
"…they invited us to the studios in Cardiff [during the filming of 'Last Christmas']. It was great. It was lovely to meet Peter [Capaldi]. A lovely man.
"…I had seen some of the performances he'd done as Doctor Who and I didn't like the way they wrote him at the beginning. I thought, 'What's going on here? Give him a chance!' They portrayed him as someone who was so prickly.
"…he started saying, 'Oh, you should come back!' I said, 'Yeah, I'd love to come back!' He was running around the TARDIS saying, 'She's got to come back! She's got to come back!'"
Good man. Peter Capaldi might just be the biggest Doctor Who fan out there. Carole Ann Ford's character was seen again in the 1983 20th-anniversary special, "The Five Doctors," and in the 1993 charity special "Dimensions in Time." The First Doctor's (William Hartnell) original companion was last seen in the first few moments of "The Name of the Doctor" in 2013, but was sadly played by a body double. When she was asked if she would be keen to return to the BBC sci-fi series, Ford replied: "Yeah, of course! Are you kidding?"

Doctor Who Could See the Return of Carole Ann Ford

Could the original companion make her return to Doctor Who? If Peter Capaldi gets his way, then that may actually happen.
According to an interview in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine, Carole Ann Ford mentioned being invited to the studios in Cardiff for the filming of ‘Last Christmas.’ There, she hit it off with Peter Capaldi, who stated that she needed to come back. When Ford mentioned that she was open to the idea, Capaldi began running around saying that she needed to return.
It would certainly be a fascinating angle to pursue. While Susan has made the occasional appearance, her story is still an unresolved one from Classic Doctor Who. The Doctor has not yet returned for her like he promised, even if he may have seen her in passing during his travels.
However, if Ford is to return to Doctor Who, she may need to be convinced about the scripts first. In her interview, she stated that she was not a fan of the way that the Twelfth Doctor was initially portrayed, as he came across as too “prickly” of a being. Perhaps the softer Doctor that we have been told will be forthcoming in Series Nine will help sway Ford to return.
It would certainly be interesting to see the role she would play. Would she return as an older Susan, still on Earth and building her life with David? What of the family she and David had put together? How would the Doctor handle finding out that he really is not alone, and that he does have a family out there in the vastness of time and space?
It would certainly be fascinating to see how the Doctor, who has identified as the last of his kind for so long, would react to such news. Even if that claim is false, especially given the return of Missy, the Doctor’s lack of a family could be the impetuous to such a statement. With Susan potentially out there, however, it would be interesting to see how things would change for the Doctor.

With all of the buzz regarding the possibility of Clara Oswald returning to the Whoniverse, there is another former companion about whom many have been wondering… one who has not made a new appearance on screen for a very long time.
Last June, we reported that, in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, Carole Ann Ford said that Peter Capaldi expressed his desire to see her reprise her role as Susan Foreman, the Doctor’s granddaughter and first companion on the show. Ford also asserted that she would love to return.
Her run as a companion lasted from the very first episode, ‘An Unearthly Child‘ (1963) to ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth‘ (1964). She then guest starred in the 1983 special, ‘The Five Doctors‘ and later in the 1993 Children in Need two-part charity special ‘Dimensions in Time.’ The last time that we technically saw Susan was in the 2013 episode ‘The Name of the Doctor.’ Because it was set before the events of ‘An Unearthly Child,’ however, the character was portrayed by a body double, not Ford.
The issue of her hypothetical return was recently resurrected at Fan Expo Dallas, when Capaldi was asked on a panel which companion he would like to see make a comeback. He gave the reason that too much was left untold about her character.

With the showrunner changing after Series Ten from Steven Moffat to Chris Chibnall it is a particularly opportune time to have such a major event occur on the program. It could either be seen as Moffat going out with a bang, or as Chibnall making a strong opening statement. Either way, it would be lovely to grant Capaldi’s wish before the next regeneration.
Another option would be for her to appear on Class (on which Capaldi almost certainly will appear), as Coal Hill School is her alma mater. And if they were to also bring back William Russell to reprise his role as former companion Ian Chesterton — and former teacher of Susan’s — all the better.

As ever, the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has thrown up some interesting discussion points for fans of the show. This month, it's Steven Moffat's 'guilt' over the Time War, and Peter Capaldi's desire to bring Carole Ann Ford's Susan back to the show that have sparked debate online.
Of the Time War, which he famously unravelled in The Day Of The Doctor, Moffat said this:
"The Day of the Doctor was a success. Record ratings, awards, rave reviews. By any measure, it did alright. But two years later, I’m still haunted by the guilt. I know some of you, including friends of mine, were upset that we reversed the outcome of the Time War. My defence, however feeble, is that given the chance, the Doctor would do exactly that. And it was his birthday, how could I deny him that chance? What could define him more? This man who always finds another way? And there he is, at every moment of his life, proving to himself – literally – that there is always a better path."
And, discussing a recent set visit, Carole Ann Ford revealed Peter Capaldi's passionate response to the idea of bringing back Susan:

...just remembering that Carole Ann Ford is now 75 years old so perhaps it's the right time for her to make an reappearance before it's 'too late' so to speak... it would be a good 'homage' to her to say nothing else wouldn't it?... besides... it would make Peter Capaldi's dream come true just before he leaves us so it's bound to happen methinks!... as his 'grand daughter' she will be around 20 years older than The Doctor who is her 'grand father' so that will be such an intriguing moment won't it?... lol!...
...it all points to seeing her return after all of those years that have past... The Doctor is bound to track her down to see what has become of her after such a long time... who wouldn't?... especially after having him obviously doting on those photographs... besides... with Moffatt's immense ego he is bound to want to go out with some sort of signature 'big step' in his impending leaving of the show... after all.. he has brought Gallifrey back into the Whovian universe again... having Susan come back is about all he has got left to play around with now isn't it?... there's not much left that he can milk out of it surely?... anyhow... after all of that I'll be hoping and wanting her back that's for sure... cheers.

As ever, the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has thrown up some interesting discussion points for fans of the show. This month, it's Steven Moffat's 'guilt' over the Time War, and Peter Capaldi's desire to bring Carole Ann Ford's Susan back to the show that have sparked debate online.
Of the Time War, which he famously unravelled in The Day Of The Doctor, Moffat said this:
"The Day of the Doctor was a success. Record ratings, awards, rave reviews. By any measure, it did alright. But two years later, I’m still haunted by the guilt. I know some of you, including friends of mine, were upset that we reversed the outcome of the Time War. My defence, however feeble, is that given the chance, the Doctor would do exactly that. And it was his birthday, how could I deny him that chance? What could define him more? This man who always finds another way? And there he is, at every moment of his life, proving to himself – literally – that there is always a better path."
And, discussing a recent set visit, Carole Ann Ford revealed Peter Capaldi's passionate response to the idea of bringing back Susan:
"They invited us to the studios in Cardiff [during the filming of Last Christmas]. It was great. It was lovely to meet Peter [Capaldi]. A lovely man."
"I had seen some of the performances he’d done as Doctor Who," she added, "and I didn’t like the way they wrote him at the beginning. I thought, ‘What’s going on here? Give him a chance!’ They portrayed him as someone who was so prickly."
"He started saying, ‘Oh, you should come back!" Ford continued, "’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to come back!’ He was running around the TARDIS saying, ‘She’s got to come back! She’s got to come back!’”
Would she be interested in coming back, then? “Yeah, of course! Are you kidding?” she said.

So who is susan's mum? More interesting than where is susan - is her Mum the Doctor's daughter? River?
So on 2nd viewing, Bill's pics of her Mum - it is clearer that was sweetie Doc
The mind wipe stuff is very interesting - echoes of the wonderful Doctor Donna heartbreaking scenes, and of course the Doctor now does know what that feels like.
Will the Clara stuff get cleared up, mentioned, anything???I hate the floating characters, I want some closure or adventures for -
Capt Jack, doctors' Daughter, Clara....and a pinch of Rose & Donna would be nice

...just a few observations... is that bird supposed to remind The Doctor of the Raven that killed Clara?... and that thing in the glass jar on the right... is it a plant from Gallifrey perhaps?...and speaking of the Sonic Screwdrivers... will they be eventually handed back to the original Doctor's that owned them?... in cameo appearances perhaps?... and one last thing... is that a piece of the crystal on the left hand side that The Doctor pounded for 3 billion years or whatever to get to Clara possibly?...
...so here below are two images of Bill's photo's of her real mother... The Doctor obviously went back in time to take the photo's because of what Bill said about her earlier and the importance of photo's... (that she never had of her )... in one of them you see The Doctor taking the actual photo's himself yet Bill fails to mention it to him at all... I find that to be rather odd to be honest...
...next is the eye in the drain in Bill's house... it looks really menacing doesn't it?... lol!... I thought that this part was great...
...and next this brilliant shot... I loved what they did here... the alien world looked quite believable to me... the whooshing geyser added to the effect really well in my opinion...
...and finally... I just loved this special effect... it made my day to be honest... haha!... that Dalek really got frustrated when he kept zapping that water image of her didn't he?... lol!...
...I so loved this episode and if all the others are as good as this one was then I'll be stoked... I've watched it 3 times so far lol!... I'm sure that it won't be the last time either lol!... cheers.
