People keep saying this and I think his point was they are not supportive of his relationship and being gay. I can totally see people loving their kid and being cold to their partner and relationship. I don't think he ever denied they loved him. But, it's not uncommon for people to embrace the part of the kid they love and shun the rest, especially when it comes to sexuality.
