I don't agree with her accusation that his silence was "aggressive" though. I didn't at the time and I still don't. She might have felt it a bit confronting, but I don't think aggressive was the right word. Merlin was like the least scary HM ever. At the time he was visibly freaking out and overcome with determination, and trying to deal with an adrenaline overload.

These 2 episodes with Merlin showed what she capable of, I don't think many if any other host could handle a situation like this on the fly as well and professionally has, she did.

One thought, I've always had is, was she underrated by a lot of people because she hosted Big Brother and for as popular as it was, it was equally unpopular, So her association with the show brought her down in the eyes of all the haters.

but with saying that her performance as host of the 2009 Logies was pretty damn awful.
 
Well, look. To play devil’s advocate, for all her amazing moments, she also had some pretty shocking moments too. She lost her cool and said/did some arguably unprofessional things whilst live on air in the next few seasons as well.

So that, coupled with her association with BB which itself was mostly negatively received at the time, as well as the way in which she went out, certainly left a not-so-great lasting impression.

I’ve been rooting for a Gretel redemption for years.

Didn't screeners usually have quite prominent copyright notices and watermarks, to stop them being shared around? I wonder whether they would've bothered with that for something like BB. 🤔

It's funny because I remember Davina and the (former) UK producers saying BB5 – also 2004 – was the point where it changed from letting a bunch of Housemates loose to see what happened, to being something that needed to be "contained".

I guess the "How Far Can You Push Reality TV?" wave was cresting for everyone in 2004, not just one or two specific shows. 😄
 
Surely not that tricky to work out the yard is where the yard is and the house is where the house is. The shower area and kitchen are exactly where they were in BB3.
 
Just took a look in. Part 3 stream looks to have finished at the end of Week 8, Sun 27th June 2004, Day 57 with Eviction #7 (Kane). Only a month left of the season and I think Part 4 starts next week now doesn't it. The Intruders have also just gone in.

I hope Gretel gets her flowers one day, but I think a lot of people now realise how incredible she was hosting Big Brother, especially the people who grew up watching the show. I hope Gretel knows how amazing she was heading this show and I hope she can look back on the show more fondly now than she has in the past. She will always be our “Big Mother”. 🥰

I really hope they do something for her on YouTube or during the launch show, little tribute and thank you for what she did for Big brother.

Also did the housemates in S4 get more strikes than any other season? About 4? have gotten strikes with Paul and Merlin getting 2 strikes each and I can't remember any other housemates getting this many strikes.

Strikes were given out a lot during 2005 and 2006, too. Especially 2005. I recall quite a number of HMs between 04-07 getting up to two strikes.

Of-course they were rarely ever going to give a third, unless something very serious happened.
 
Rewatching Merlin's nomination show interview and gotta say I absolutely respect him. At the age of 12 in 2004 I didn't it get but honestly he was so brave to do what he did & still such a current issue all of these years on.

Also, Gretel handled the entire situation so well. She held him accountable in the nomination show interview but also nurtured him and put him at ease.

I would really love to see Gretel with a larger platform these days, like a podcast or something. She is ridiculously well spoken and smart & we need more people like her in media.
