Big Brother 2004 on official YouTube channel (Live streamed Aug 29 -30 + Sept 6-7)

Trevor was a nice guy and it’s quite the feat to have never been nominated by his housemates but that does not make for a good winner. I don’t feel like he brought anything to the show? Agree that Paul would have been a worthy winner and maybe with vote to save he would have, but I don’t think people viewed it as a game yet. But take Paul out and the show is so different.

But yeah… the amount of black face was astounding! Was that really deemed ok as recently as 2004?

At the risk of getting banned (I've had a few drinks... no excuse) but I think there was never a thought in the back of people's minds back then, that would end with someone getting dressed up being deemed offensive or result in carrying malicious intent. They obviously wanted him to win, so they were there to support him. I personally don't see an issue, but I can understand if others do. I know you're just making an observation! 😊 But yeah, I guess different time.

We also notice from here on in, that there are less audience members with big posters and dress ups. I remember 2008 they were basically mannequins sitting in seats 💀

Yes I don’t believe the people dressing up as Trevor had any mal intent, they would probably be mortified to see this resurfacing. I think broader society hadn’t really progressed enough to understand how wrong it was and I think that is important to remember when a photo from someone’s past resurfaces decades later. Luckily we know better now I suppose.

Even the lady dressed as a Geisha is not really acceptable now, it’s so interesting to observe. But I guess 21 years is actually a long time ago.

Sorry to hijack the current discussion, but my heart broke for Bree when she went back into the house and, after the initial shock, everyone was in the bedroom, and she suddenly broke down. It must have been horribly overwhelming being evicted to the outside world then coming back 24 hours later. I just can't imagine going through that. Insane. In interviews later on, Bree said she was really pushed to come back in because of the potential legal implications the show could have faced. I felt a bit bad for her because she probably didn't really want to go back in at the time.

Just watched the end of the finale. A $1m prize and the budget couldn't even stretch to a giant novelty cheque to show for it???
All their budget went on putting hideous shaky text effects from Final Cut Studio 2 on every surface. 😬

I remember the same happened with Josie when she won BB11 and went back into the Ultimate Big Brother House. Admittedly that was partly the shock of finding herself living with celebrities, but... I dunno. Coming out of the House after that long must be such a shock to the system.

Black face was absolutely not acceptable in 2004. Or 1994 or 1984. 1974 they'd probably get away with it.

I’m afraid Australia was massively behind the times. This was 2009…

People still weirdly try to defend black face now so I’m not surprised. I didn’t always understand the historical significance behind it so perhaps as a teenager I may not have questioned someone else doing it, but I feel every adult (at a minimum) in 2025 absolutely know better. But there is so much racism in Australia. I don’t believe the people dressing up as Trevor were racists, at least not based on that alone, but still a long way to go.

Apologies for derailing this thread.

I did love Gretel’s professionalism during the power outage. This season absolutely tested her but she repeatedly proved how amazing she is, it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing the job as well. She did seem to be beginning to lose her passion for the show though.
