Big Brother 2004 on official YouTube channel (Live streamed Aug 29 -30 + Sept 6-7)

This was my first thought. If they’ve been moved around for various reasons over the years, potentially without much care, then that may very well have contributed to their decay.

Also found this discussion about the switch to HD in the later seasons.
Another good find! You're good at this :)

Yeah, all HD cameras and monitors by the looks of things. I think previous seasons were 4:3 cropped to 16:9 to produce a faux "widescreen" that was broadcast.

There's a good chance they switched to DV (remember MiniDV camcorders?) - even still, those are magnetic tapes too.

What’s the secret?

The secret was kind of anticlimactic for viewers I feel, but I guess it did change the dynamic a little bit and made winning more high stakes and for voters as well, even if the winner was pretty boring.

Anyway, I will watch tonight but the excitement lessens with each weekend. The 12 hour stints feel more doable.

Yeah didn't they literally expose all the secrets in the promos? I feel they did that because the housemates would have been in lockdown, it was more a secret for them than us. That's what happened in 2007 as well.

They didn’t even reveal the increase prize money to the HM’s until well in to the season. It might have stood a chance to have an impact had they revealed it to them on night 1 but by the time it was revealed HM’s cared just as much as we did.

ETA: the “secret” was nothing more than a marketing gimmick because they otherwise had nothing to build a campaign on.

This also reminds me of in 2005 when every HM was told they may or may not be going in only to all find out on stage they were going in. I guess that creates some suspense for the HMs but it didn’t really add anything for the viewers so not sure why it was included in the launch, maybe could have just been done off screen. I feel like maybe the audience even knew everyone was going in?

I'm more interested in what the fake secrets were that they had Gretel reveal at the pre-taped launch. That way even the audience didn't know which one was actually the secret.

I remember hearing somewhere that they filmed three different secret reveals.

If I remember correctly, I think the two fake secrets have been that there was a second house below the current house and that there are two couples or related housemates in the house.

Yeah it would have been interesting to see if Paul changed his behaviour slightly (not going so hard on Merlin about the citzenship thing for instance) had he known about the million bucks from early on. Probably not but you never know.

I often wonder how Igor made it through casting when he seemed to have a somewhat lengthly criminal history. Certainly he wouldn't have a snowballs chance of getting on the show today.

OK I'm 10 mins behind. Does this look like it's playing off tape? It looks pretty damn good, but time will tell I guess. I suspect there's some double sided tape attaching Gretel's top to her boobs.
