Big Brother 2001 episodes on official YouTube channel (Live streamed Aug 1-3)

So when did they start taping the whole show in HD? Molks TV Talk said after the 2012 launch "HD cameras used via Global Television (but aired in SD)", while Gemini AI says "The "Big Brother Australia" house was upgraded to HD cameras for the 2020 season. This was a significant change that coincided with the show's revival on the Seven Network."

They could both be true, with camera run cameras being HD in 2012 but not the fixed/hot head ones, or something like that? Even in S1 you could see a mix of different image qualities in the eps, but I didn't take the time to analyse which was which. Anyone know?

Uncut being censored on YouTube shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

HD was a very loose definition for a while. People buying 720p flat panels under HD. most HD TVs were only 1080i capable for quite a while. Even the broadcasts were 720p or 1080i for a long time in the HD era. Even when you watch a HD broadcast of a show on blu-ray from the 2000s. It doesn't look great by todays standards.

Here are some random screen grabs taken directly from the HD broadcast of season 8. Most should be the capture resolution. I had a capture card in my PC at the time. I possibly have footage and other stuff elsewhere on a random harddrive.

I am pretty sure the control room was updated to HD in 2006.....

HD in production is a bit of a misnomer. Many shows up until recently were taped in 720p and "upscaled" for broadcast in 1080i. Most shows now tape in either 2K or 4K. 10 was not using HD equipment back in 2001 - it's interesting they were using widescreen at the time, which generally coincides with HD. My guess is they likely cropped for 16:9 broadcast and shot 4:3 safe.

the last one 🤣

In the Saturday show (ep 1). Gretel interviews a producer who says they talk to the housemates. This would have been via Big brother right? Or could the housemates talk directly to producers?

I would say that any of the producers on duty for the day would be referred to as BB. Hence why in one of the eps in 01 there was that English female voice and also in 07. I'd say most of them don't make it to air.

I feel like I've read before that the BB voices (at least were) came from the on-shift producer at that time. Peter Abbot would obviously have been the one present for important things such as Evictions and Nominations.

From memory of when I rewatched the series I do recall a segment on either a live show or daily show of the housemates talking about how there were 6 different voices and they would call Peter Abbott "Big Big Brother".

Big Brother having different voices was referenced a lot by housemates kind of breaking fourth wall and outright acknowledging Big Brother has multiple voices. Even on the channel nine version you could hear the striking difference between Leon Murray and whoever the voice was that would mostly appear in daily shows, specifically when the housemates would partake in tasks or gimmicks.

I even caught someone referring to Big Big Brother on one of the eps I caught live on the weekend stream, and knew the reference. I don't mind hearing the different BB voices on the show, even when it's a woman. Back in the day I thought it should be some big booming digitised voice, but ultimately I liked the personalities of the various BBs. Seven's overdubbed voice was cringe and I hated it.
