BBAU Rewatch

Its funny though because they literally did the same thing in 2001. 'Don't You Think That It's Strange' was done as a house task and also in partnership with Sirens iirc (who later did that Cover of 'I'm So Excited' with Sara Marie ad libbing random catch phrases in it like 'Bum Dance') and both made it into the Top 40 IIRC and were played on the music clip shows along with the theme song.

2013 had a specific task too with a Girls Vs Boys group number but I don't remember how either of those go on the spot, would have to look them up or when Zcsund gets to that part.

As you say, that was given to them as a task. Oats was presented as something they just came up with to amuse themselves. TBF, I do buy that, but how it somehow got upgraded to a full-on performance could only have been due to producers' influence. It didn't help that it was just plain irritating, too.

the 2001 song was at least very meta. It was about the Big brother experience and the lyrics spoke about how strange and new the concept of the show was. Making it into a performance was warranted IMO as it assisted in how the show's popularity was so large. Oats Ala Layla was just some simple fun that became cringe.

The 2013/2014 song tasks were pretty fucking stupid. But they got stuck in my head for days.

Passed it already but I can't not comment on it. Josh leaving was a very sad part of the series that not only left a hole in the house but changed the end result entirely. I remember the Wednesday when Josh had been said to have left the house and my mum came to pick me up from school early just to tell me. I personally really liked Josh, he wasn't the loudest but his impact on the other housemates was a lot more positive than negative.

I agree with a very detailed and well thought out post @the Theorist made about what would have happened if this unfortunate incident did not occur. If Josh stayed Michael would most likely not have swooped in on Estelle last minute, there was no way Josh was going to be evicted any time soon at all, if anything he had a really good chance at potentially winning the show. Angie very likely would have been evicted like she was the next week, one of Sam, Zoe or even Stacey are the next three to go in any order. Michael's popularity would not have plummeted and with Josh and Estelle having large followings I agree with @the Theorist that Benjamin and Layla probably go in the double eviction before the finale (if anything Stacey potentially could have beaten Layla, at the time I would have guessed this but reading whirlpool it seems she was disliked by some just as much as she was liked). Michael probably would have won but I wouldn't put it past the possibility of Estelle taking it out. The finale would have potentially been close, but if production really didn't want Estelle to win they probably would have shown the graph if she was leading anyway.

Edit: After some more thinking, Josh potentially could have been evicted in the double eviction as well. It all depends on how much his popularity compared to Benjamin's. Irregardless, the final four would have been Benjamin, Estelle, Josh and Michael. Michael and Estelle would have been the front runners to win, but production most likely guides the win to land into Michael's lap.

I think the show dealt with the situation very well. Turning off cameras for the goodbyes to Josh was a smart move, it wasn't something that fans or cameramen needed to really sit and watch. The eviction situation is a bit iffy but adding a housemate that late would have tainted the end of the series like 06. The way the following eviction was done was fair and one of the initial nominees left anyway, so nothing too unfair happened. I liked that Josh at least got his own live interview on the Sunday, but I do wonder if this would have been done for anyone, or if it was done just because it was Josh.

It is interesting to think how it could have played out. I agree it was handled well, poor Josh… that really would be so horrible and even nearly 10 years later his family would still be healing.

One thing I always think about with the Josh situation is the earlier no task where both Angie and Layla (and possibly others?) rejected a phone call from a loved one and similar tasks done in subsequent years. I imagine if Josh had said no to a call from his brother. Maybe not a huge deal, but for some reason it plays on my mind in the very rare instances this comes up.

Re-watching 2012. Does confirm my initial thoughts. By far the most bitchy and gossipy. Sort of Interesting viewing in a perverse sense but not exactly comfortable or enjoyable viewing.
A lot of pretty unlikeable characters imo.

I always thought so Z even on first viewing. Not that any of them are out and out horrible. They have good sides. But the ugliness surfaced often in a lot of the housemates. Tends to happen in a climate of gossip and bitchiness.

I have never felt more confused as a viewer as I did when Ray went from 50% of the save vote one week to getting evicted the next.

It confuses me still today. At that point I guess Estelle's sympathy had begun increasing, but Angie confuses me. At the time I loved her and was so happy she was most saved. I get she made good TV, but on the rewatch I found her to be so much more unlikeable this time. I cannot believe she maintained popularity for so long.

This daily show was a really fun one when I watched it air at the time. Seeing some former BB housemates ignited a lot of conversation at the dinner table and living room. Lots of "remember Vesna? "Tim was the one who got buff in the house" "OMG I loved Reggie!".

It was pity not sympathy.

You must be close to finishing season 9 now, @Zcsund1234? At this rate, you really will be well into season 10 by the time we get more info about 2022.

On another note, did you ever slip a re-watch of CBB between seasons 2 and 3?

Finished up 2012 last night and started the first 2 episodes of 2013. I haven't finished writing my housemates thoughts or my season review so I will spend some time today doing that. Yes, when I mapped this out I had intended to finish up 2014 around the week of the season airing. But with the season seemingly airing later than expected I'll probably be finished either before or around the time we get a date.

I have never actually watched CBB in full. My mum didn't mention any interest in wanting to watch it when we watched them all together, I don't think she even remembered it airing. I was going to watch it originally but never got around to it. I might watch it someday, it would be easy to watch.

Oh wow you have already finished 12/9.

2013 I have only watched the once when it first aired, I will be curious to see how much I remember.

I watched 2013 again in 2015 so I think I liked it a lot more than when I watched it the first time. When it was on TV I spent the entire time comparing it too much to 2012, but now that my opinion on 2012 has changed I expect to like 2013 more than I did the first time. I can't remember any of my thoughts on my first rewatch of it.

I recommend, even if only for completion sake. It’s so short you’d probably be able to smash it out in less than a day. It’s rather uneventful, and it’s very unfortunate that the only copy that exists outside of the original masters is very low quality, but I’m sure it’d be interesting to tack onto the end of your full re-watch for something a little more mindless and fun.

Naturally 2013 had its flaws - a lot of contrived storytelling, reduced Daily Shows, increased network interference, “Ben From Brisbane” (🤮), Sonia, etc etc - but if you can put all that aside, I honestly think it’s one of (if not the) best season we got in Aus since the 2001-2007 days. The cast was impeccable. Plus, it gave us two of the best “game playing” HMs from the original format in the form of Tim and Tahan.

Interestingly, this season also seems to be a HUGE hit with overseas viewers from what I’ve read online over the years.
