BBAU Rewatch

Y’all… I’m starting my journey on all the episodes now from 1-11. I’m 19 (20 next month) btw however, I do remember briefly watching Channel 10 BB for a little bit. Maybe 07 or 08, something like that. I’ve got basically holidays until the very end of Feb / start of March in which I go back to uni. I definitely started from Channel 9 era and binged 07 BB like 6 years ago during school holidays of Year 8 going into 9 lol.

I saw you lot doing this so thanks for inspiring me and nice posts and breakdowns they’re so great :))

The Have Not task is one thing I do remember, mainly I think as it was so poor in comparison to the rich/poor divide other countries did. Also wasn't that when they had Chrissie overhearing comments in the camera run?

My working theory is that it was Alex Mav who made the comment since she specifies it was an English accent. I’m sure he isn’t the only English person to have worked on production but it gives me great joy to think it was him.

He gives off sleazy vibes so I too wouldn’t put it past him…

The mere thought of that man sends shivers down my spine… He played the “it’s the networks fault” card far too much for me to seriously consider cutting him some slack. IMO if he wasn’t happy with the network’s meddling or the final product he wouldn’t have signed his name to the 3 series he did. Anyone who feels the need to constantly sell himself as the “good guy” in a relationship probably isn’t as good as they’d have you believe.

Also his comments about the first season of IACGMOOH were rather petty. He was clearly taking a shot at Peter Abbott.

True - and as much as we mock Kris Noble you can't deny he tried. It was often the execution rather than the idea that let down the latter Ten series.

Alex was also very forthcoming in talking about his time producing the Nine version and I think it is no secret the show was micromanaged by the network far more than it should have been. Also have to credit the Nine era with the Superpower twist which probably deserves more credit than it gets - an overarching twist which allowed for small twists each week and a fairly neat change to the format. The bigger Nine twists didn't quite work though - guess of the Secrets, Halfway House and the Pairs only the Halfway House was sustained more than for the initial week or two, and to be fair it was a decent effort at the Rich/Poor divide. I just didn't like everyone in the Halfway House being automatically nominated.
Kris Nobel rarely had any original ideas… His era mostly copied BBUS/BBUK or continued trends that were already happening with the format prior to his rise to EP.

Regarding Alex, I don't know about all of that. However he is a mediocre producer at best.

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt at times, but I have seen way too many excuses and little evidence of any creative brilliance.

Just because he has a lot of experience under his belt does not make him any good. He is hired because of his resume and experience, and can seemingly handle the complicated day-to-day duties of running a reality television production. Alex is a manager, not a visionary. And he lacks the self-awareness to know that.

I have mixed feelings about Kris Nobel as EP. Your point about copying elements from other editions of Big Brother is valid, yet in many instances it demonstrated that he had some decent creative sensibilities. The EP doesn't need to come up with every idea, but they should have a good grasp on what can work creatively and how to execute it to interesting results. I have my criticisms about his series of Big Brother, but overall Kris was alright.

We’ll never know whether he’s an actual visionary or not because he’s a “yes man”. A good negotiator knows exactly how to put their foot down and when to compromise… Alex seems to compromise more than a person in his position should.

If you’re going to copy an idea you need to meet or exceed the original. As Brekkie pointed out execution was an issue. The Kris Noble era was defined by over hype and under delivery.

Kris also a pretty big hate on for this website and everything we stood for. The man never acknowledged criticism or admitted a mistake, but was always there to take credit when he thought he deserved it.

You're not wrong.

At the time of airing I was more critical, but in retrospect and in the context of series that followed I have a softer view about it. The results, whilst underwhelming at times, were still entertaining and memorable.

It’s not that I don’t agree that they were watchable and at times entertaining… But let’s not look at things through rose coloured glasses too much. The Kris Noble era is to blame for a lot of the issues BBAU has had in future series.

Oh btw, as many of you know I'm in Cambodia. If I watch youtube with my VPN set to AU I get ads, whereas if I turn it off there are no ads. So if you're in AU, try setting your VPN to an Asian country and see what happens.
Did anyone in AU try this? I assume you're getting ads on Youtube, but if you set your VPN to another country (I'd suggest Singapore or Malaysia perhaps) you may get no ads at all, or fewer, or at least more interesting ones.

It seems Youtube doesn't do targeted ads for viewers in Cambodia so I don't see any at all, but most VPNs probably don't have a Cambodia server, so try SG, MY, VN or ID instead.

I watch on my Apple TV, I'm watching the channel rather than the singular episodes so they play automatically and no ads have been playing unless I exit it so I haven't had any need to try and deflect ads.

Also up to week 12 and I hate how boring the week of the final 3 is from BB1-5. I am very excited to get to BB6+ where rather than having a whole week for the final 3 the final evictions are all just done in the final week as a double or multiple evictions.

Chrissie, Daniel and Reggie would have to probably be my favourite final 3 of any Big Brother Au season. BB4,7 and 11 all consist of finalists that I like a lot as well but BB3 is probably the only one where all three of my favourites make it to the final 3.

It was the right result. So rare that it works out that way.

Too many duds like the Logans have floated through to the final over fans favourites that I think we have all become jaded at this point.

So during the finale of BB2003 Gretel states that it is "their understanding that this is the first time in the world all of the finalists are women on Big Brother". It's 2003 and the year prior Danielle Reyes and Lisa Donahue were the finalists of BB3 US. If they referring to audience vote based seasons than sure it well could be, but thats more than likely because most other countries had 4 finalists in their seasons. I don't know of any other version that had a final 2 other than Australia or US? If this is just general ignorance to the fact of BBUS having an all female final 2 that that is an embarrassing incorrect flex on BBAU's part.

1:15:30 is one of my favourite moments of reality TV. Reggie's reaction to the prizes is something you can't script or make up. Her focus on the playstation has me laughing every single time I watch it. When I met her she told me it was on her mind because she saw it straight away at Gretel's feet and was preoccupied by it. The entire final of Big Brother 3 is very wholesome and I can't understand how anyone could watch this and not smile. Gretel tearing up when she announces the winner is such a raw moment from her as well and so is Chrissie's reaction to the crowd.

It says a lot that you got through 03 so quickly whilst 02 dragged on! It was really a perfect season and admittedly I’m in the minority who might have preferred Chrissie over Reggie, it was a very rare instance where I was happy with either and found both deserving

I found 04 a bit slow to get going so I’ll be curious how you find that.
