BB Canada shelved again

It seems like the people who were still watching actually enjoyed BBCAN12, more so than BB11. But BBCAN12 was doomed from the start. There was no hype and everything felt like it’s going to be the end. I think the only thing that got some hype was that Movienight Massacre or whatever it was called. Everything else felt lackluster.

And while I agree that people won’t fight to save the show this time, I think the show will be back eventually. Until then it’s BBCanned.

No doubt this news has something to do with why Corus pulled the plug on BBCAN. Corus is going to be on some shaky ground moving forward. Given that their majority shareholder holds significant shares in Rogers I wouldn’t be surprised if they were currently looking to divest their holdings in Corus.

Am I right in thinking US media organisations can't own channels in Canada, even though the main networks largely just air the US schedule in primetime? Presumably the streamers aren't covered by that so Netflix etc. get around it.

There’s no outright ban on it but Canadian media companies (as well as other protected industries) have restrictions that limit foreign ownership. Broadcasters must have Canadian ownership and control of no less than 80%.

As for Netflix or other streamers they don’t have the same limits on ownership although they are mandated to make investments in Canadian content. Recent attempts to tighten regulations around online streaming in Canada have been pretty controversial.

Although seems the owners have $20bn from selling their communications business last year to wipe their tears with.

Oh trust me I’m not losing any sleep over their losses. I am a bit perplexed considering they have a hand in both pots. My sympathies lay with the workers who are affected by this.

The only thing I can think of here is that this deal is an attempt to skirt regulatory approvals. Rogers purchase of Shaw faced a huge amount of scrutiny and would certainly face the same if not harsher scrutiny if they made an attempt to just buy up Corus entirely.

The Bloomberg article is misleading in speculating that genre protection could be used as a means of putting a regulatory barrier around this deal as the CRTC no longer licences specialty channels around genre. For any other body that may have oversight here genre protection seems like a fairly weak excuse.

We’re also talking about two “family businesses” that have traditionally had a familiar relationship. So much that the founders were said to have split the country via a handshake deal that had been respected until the takeover deal… Or at least that’s what I was told when I briefly worked at Shaw in 2017 and the fact that in terms of traditional home services (cable/phone/internet) Shaw had western Canada and Rogers was eastern Canada. “Shaw” also has a seat on Rogers board.

While the Shaw’s may be “loosing” in this deal but are likely both “winning” in the long run through growing bigger single company than two.

IDK it just seems shady and the type of underhanded dealings that have resulted in our cost of living crisis.

Global have now officially confirmed it is axed.

Global press release in full:

After 12 incredible seasons, Corus Entertainment has made the decision to end Big Brother Canada. The series has been a leader in the reality TV space, always prioritizing the rich diversity of Canada in front of and behind the camera, and Corus is extremely proud of its unprecedented success across our platforms over the last 12 seasons.

“Today as we say goodbye to the beloved series, we celebrate the great success and impact Big Brother Canada has had in our country and in the Canadian media landscape for over a decade. Global will always be proud to have been home to Big Brother Canada for 12 seasons, and we are grateful to our partners at Banijay Rights for their support and guidance, and Insight Productions for their passion, dedication, and creativity. We would like to thank Executive Producer Erin Brock and Host and Executive Producer Arisa Cox for always leading thought-provoking conversations, telling uniquely Canadian stories, and reflecting the diverse culture of Canada in one of television’s biggest social experiments. This series, and the production team behind it, have truly set the bar in creating entertaining unscripted television. And finally, to our #BBCAN fanbase, you have all kept the series thriving and we thank you for joining us on this journey for the last 12 seasons.”

– Troy Reeb, Co-Chief Executive Officer, Corus Entertainmen

I'm a bit surprised that they've actually confirmed the cancellation. Probably couldn't be bothered with a couple of fans trying to save it for a second time and seeing hope everywhere, so they've spelled it out.

I'm not too familiar with the Canadian media landscape. When they wanted to cancel it after season 5, people said that 5 seasons were already an achievement for Canadian television. Now they've got another 7 seasons out of it. That's quite an achievement I guess.

When it comes to international formats Amazing Race is quite close - began a few months after Big Brother Canada and has had 9 seasons and a tenth starts next week, only missing two years due to covid.

In comparison Canadian Idol lasted just six seasons. Got Talent had one in 2012 but has aired annually since being rebooted in 2022. Masterchef had 7 seasons, as has Canadian Bake Off.

No doubt Corus is on the verge of bankruptcy and the few assets it has left are likely to be sold off in the next few years. At this point any movement to “save” the show is extremely unlikely to succeed.

This is probably the most natural/authentic Arisa has been in the past few years. Interesting that she specifically mentions that BBCAN will not be back on Global… It feels a bit like Emma saying BB19 would be the last on Channel 5. I do have to wonder though if it did go elsewhere if the live would be fully revived. Part of me thinks the best we can hope for is something similar to the current BBUK series.

Just have to wonder how the Canadian English rights, the Canadian French rights and the Canadian rights to BBUSA are all intertwined - could another broadcaster pick up the local rights whilst Global are still showing the US version. Heck, would be fun if they picked it up then scheduled it directly against the US version!

Considering they have the French version and could make use of their house Bell Media would be the obvious choice but I just can't see CTV taking it, especially as they've got The Traitors for now at least.

This statement leads me to believe the two aren’t as connected as they might seem.

“Brock said it's possible the show could get picked up by another Canadian broadcaster, but it's ultimately up to Banijay, which holds the rights, to shop and sell it.”

As for Bell Media they also have Canada’s Drag Race which is a Crave exclusive… I think BBCAN would make for a great addition and would eliminate timezones being an issue.

Assume Crave is a streamer - and reinstating live feeds is an easy win and could drive up subscriptions.

Away from the live feeds scheduling has always been a nightmare for BB Canada having to fit around the US schedules, so often playing in the 7pm hour. As you say a streamer would avoid that problem.
