BB Canada is on hiatus again, out of the schedules for 2024/25 after falling ratings. Don't think they'll be a fan campaign to save it this time - they're basically facing the consequences of their own bad decisions.
There’s no outright ban on it but Canadian media companies (as well as other protected industries) have restrictions that limit foreign ownership. Broadcasters must have Canadian ownership and control of no less than 80%.Am I right in thinking US media organisations can't own channels in Canada, evenvthoughvthe main betworks largely just air the US schedule in primetime? Presumably the streamers aren't covered by that so Netflix etc. get around it.
Oh trust me I’m not losing any sleep over their losses. I am a bit perplexed considering they have a hand in both pots. My sympathies lay with the workers who are affected by this.Although seems the owners have $20bn from selling their communications business last year to wipe their tears with.
Global press release in full:
After 12 incredible seasons, Corus Entertainment has made the decision to end Big Brother Canada. The series has been a leader in the reality TV space, always prioritizing the rich diversity of Canada in front of and behind the camera, and Corus is extremely proud of its unprecedented success across our platforms over the last 12 seasons.
“Today as we say goodbye to the beloved series, we celebrate the great success and impact Big Brother Canada has had in our country and in the Canadian media landscape for over a decade. Global will always be proud to have been home to Big Brother Canada for 12 seasons, and we are grateful to our partners at Banijay Rights for their support and guidance, and Insight Productions for their passion, dedication, and creativity. We would like to thank Executive Producer Erin Brock and Host and Executive Producer Arisa Cox for always leading thought-provoking conversations, telling uniquely Canadian stories, and reflecting the diverse culture of Canada in one of television’s biggest social experiments. This series, and the production team behind it, have truly set the bar in creating entertaining unscripted television. And finally, to our #BBCAN fanbase, you have all kept the series thriving and we thank you for joining us on this journey for the last 12 seasons.”
– Troy Reeb, Co-Chief Executive Officer, Corus Entertainmen
No doubt Corus is on the verge of bankruptcy and the few assets it has left are likely to be sold off in the next few years. At this point any movement to “save” the show is extremely unlikely to succeed.I'm a bit surprised that they've actually confirmed the cancellation. Probably couldn't be bothered with a couple of fans trying to save it for a second time and seeing hope everywhere, so they've spelled it out.
I'm not too familiar with the Canadian media landscape. When they wanted to cancel it after season 5, people said that 5 seasons were already an achievement for Canadian television. Now they've got another 7 seasons out of it. That's quite an achievement I guess.
This statement leads me to believe the two aren’t as connected as they might seem.Just have to wonder how the Canadian English rights, the Canadian French rights and the Canadian rights to BBUSA are all intertwined - could another broadcaster pick up the local rights whilst Global are still showing the US version. Heck, would be fun if they picked it up then scheduled it directly against the US version!
Considering they have the French version and could make use of their house Bell Media would be the obvious choice but I just can't see CTV taking it, especially as they've got The Traitors for now at least.
