Australian Survivor: Articles

AS days turn into weeks on Australian Survivor and the two tribes starve, then binge, then starve again, viewers of the show keep raising one curly question.
WHERE DO THE CONTESTANTS DO THEIR POOS AND WEES?
Do they go to an actual bathroom somewhere off-camera? Do they dig a hole? Hide behind a bush?
Do they go in the ocean? Dear lord, tell us they don’t go in the ocean. Those lagoons are mighty still at times, and nobody wants a brown king tide.
Look, we’re not being gross for the sake of it, guys. People actually want to know the answer to this question.

Where do they go toilet on#SurvivorAU? Do they have to dig a hole or are there facilities provided?

Doesn't anyone ever go to the bathroom? How is it so hard to get away from camp? Just say you need to poop#SurvivorAU

OK. Never let it be said that we’re not intrepid investigative reporters here at news.com.au. We got host Jonathan LaPaglia to clear the air:
“There is a porta-potty near their camp, yes. But that’s it, nothing else. I don’t think [the porta-potty] is particularly great, let’s say that,” LaPaglia told us.
“Environmentally, when somewhere like Samoa is kind enough to let us shoot there, we have to treat the place with a certain respect, and leave it as we found it. Sanitation is an issue.”

You’re telling us — it’s all we think about every time the all-powerful Saanapu win another reward challenge then return to their camp for a stomach-churning feast of Roman orgy proportions (if Roman orgies were exclusively catered by Hungry Jacks).
Already this season we’ve watched Sam lose his lunch after eating half his body weight in local Samoan fare in one sitting, while Matt barfed after sculling a jug of chocolate milk in one foul gulp (milk, as the saying goes, was most certainly a bad choice).

It's time to go... To the toilet. Saanapu. Too much chocolate milk.#SurvivorAU

“I get it on one hand, because they’re out there living on beans and rice, so when something like that comes across their table they just can’t help themselves,” LaPaglia told us.
“But of course their stomachs have shrunk in those circumstances and just can’t handle that kind of load. That challenge where they won the Samoan feast, they just gorged and they all ended up being quite sick. But they just can’t help themselves.”

We also probed LaPaglia about his living conditions while on the island, which he admitted were more than a cut above those of the contestants. Come on, you didn’t think the host would be roughing it?
LaPaglia stayed in an overwater hut — complete with glass-bottomed living room — at the Coconut Beach Club, near to where filming took place on the south side of the island.

This ain’t a plug, FYI, we just thought you’d be interested to know where exactly LaPaglia was bedded down when the contestants were spooning each other’s stinky bodies for heat each night.
The host made one somewhat feeble protest about his conditions at the resort: There was no telephone or TV in his overwater hut, so “If you wanted something, you had to hike all the way back to reception for it,” he said. The horror.
“But they’re out on the beach with literally nothing. I’d be woken up at two, three in the morning by pounding rain and I’d be annoyed, but those guys were out there with nothing but a banana leaf over their heads.
“The poor bastards.”

Australian Survivor airs Sundays to Tuesdays, 7:30pm on Ten. Tribe merge coming this Sunday!

Oh, not sure where to put this, but head's up:

It won't be on this Sunday October 2nd, because NRL Grand Final is on.

(Great, I so love sport.)

And the first ep of the new season of US Survivor will be on later than one could ever have expected on Thursday night on 9 because it isn't just the fucking Footy Show it's the AFL Footy Show: Grand Final Edition - which runs for three hours! Three hours! So forget 10 pm...

...yes but Sam said...
...I'm pumped... it shows that the 'good guys' can flip this game on it's head blah blah"...

...so he considers himself to be...

...a 'good guy' does he?...

...but...

...he wasn't with Conner... he screwed him over just as much as the bimboids did...

...so much for him thinking that eh?... cheers.

Losers calling themselves good guys is a bit rich - and being a bit thick also does not qualify, Sam is a plank, lee thinks he is smart but really wants to be with the in crowd, he is also dating El so won't vote against her

Australian Survivor: The Jury Villa

TEN has announced an online extra for Australian Survivor fans, following tonight’s episode.

The Jury Villa will follow eliminated contestants who comprise the final jury, with the first to be announced tonight.

The online series will follow eliminated contestants from Tribal Council to the Jury Villa, a “half-way house between civilisation and the game.”

Viewers will see how the eliminated contestants interact with each other away from camp, as they discuss strategies and what really happened while on Samoa.

Relationships will form and change as they learn more about each other and reveal if their behaviour in the game was genuine or just part of a strategy.

The gameplay continues in the Jury Villa as the contestants decide what kind of jury member they will be. Will their exit from the show influence the way they vote and where do their alliances truly lie?

At the Jury Villa, contestants enjoy their first proper meal in weeks, a hot shower, a comfortable bed to sleep in and the opportunity to see their reflection in a mirror for the first time since being marooned on the rugged tropical island.

They will also attend the final round of Tribal Councils to watch and listen to the remaining contestants and ultimately decide who will be chosen as the sole survivor.

The Jury Villa will be available to watch at www.tenplay.com.au/survivor after Australian Survivor on Tuesday 27 September.

This is about US Survivor but is probably also true of Australian Survivor.

I was looking up 'behind the scenes' and Google came up with a bunch of info about how things get done during production... thought I would cut'n'paste a few ones together for our Survivor n00bs... :) Now wondering if Kat's hat was actually Kat's hat.

Do Survivor cast members get personal hygiene items?

Yes and no. They have access to a container with necessary supplies, such as feminine products, birth control, vital medications, contact lens solution, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Otherwise, they're on their own. Contestants don't get razors, toothbrushes, or other conveniences, so if they have bright white teeth or aren't growing body hair, it may be because of tooth whitening or laser hair removal they had done before they left for the show.

Do the contestants get more information than we see on TV about challenges?

Yes. After host Jeff Probst gives the explanation we see on TV, Probst and John Kirhoffer, the leader of the team that constructs all of the show's games, walk through the challenge with each tribe. The tribes can ask questions or strategize during that time, and doing it separately keeps the other tribe from knowing the others' strategy, if they have one. Accompanying them is someone from CBS' standards and practices division, who makes sure that each tribe has the same basic information so that the contest remains fair.

How long does Tribal Council last?

It varies, from 45 minutes to 90 minutes, but it's a lot longer than what we see on TV. However, give thanks that it's edited, since much of the conversation is also kind of boring.

What does Jeff Probst do when he goes to "tally the votes"?

After actually collecting the votes, Jeff consults with producers, who have been watching the voting confessional footage live in a production booth far away from Tribal Council. Based upon what they've seen and the actual outcome of the vote, they decide the order in which Jeff will read the votes aloud, organizing them for maximum drama and selecting which contestants' votes will be shown on TV. That's why the votes Jeff reveals first are the ones viewers have already seen.

Where do cast members go once they're voted out?

To Ponderosa, a nearby camp or facility. Those who don't make the jury typically leave together and stay elsewhere until the end of the game, while those who are on the jury remain at Ponderosa and on location, so they can attend Tribal Council every third day.

Do the Survivors wear their own clothes?

How did each of the two tribes on "Survivor San Juan Del Sur" end up wearing clothing that just happened to match their tribe's color? It wasn't coincidence, but design. The Survivor rule book notes that clothing brought on location must be pre-approved, but that isn't the full story. The show's producers select clothes that not only help viewers identify them visually, but clothes can also help illustrate the role that the cast member has been cast to fill. Producers sometimes even buy bathing suits and clothes for contestants, asking them to wear something they might not normally wear. Eventual winner John Cochran didn't even wear sweater vests before the show, but it helped define him as smart and nerdy.

1. Is it off Sunday's from now on? Or just this Sunday?
Just this Sunday. It's a holiday in NSW on Monday and the NRL grand final is Sunday night.

And daylight saving starts as well so don't forget it's an hour earlier from Monday.
