I'm talking about my age in relation to the show. Its not as appealing to me at the age I am now, as it was when I was the age of the majority of the housemates. And thats fine, not all shows are made for everyone, and this one is no longer made for my demographic.

I still choose to enjoy it for what it is this season, but I accept its not aimed at people like me going forward. I was chasing the feeling the show gave me back then, it doesnt do that anymore. I hadnt seen BB for years before Celeb BBUK, so thats why I am only having this revelation now 😝
I do think that this particular season is aimed more specifically at a younger audience than it was before, casting and editing alike. Even though I've watched them more than once I still enjoyed watching the streams the last few months even though I'm now older than the hm's at the time, and in a way I still feel like I'm within the intended target demographic ~20 years on. I do legitimately enjoy rewatches and it's not even a nostalgic thing. I feel I connect with the hm's and overall show more. It's actually a watchable format for the most part. This new season feels intentionally targeted towards the youngens. Perhaps it's awful to say, but from my perspective new BB is just dumbed down.

Perhaps it's just the way "modern" Big Brother is made now. Even if that's true, I do not accept what's being spoon fed to us as acceptable. The format does work for most age demographics when it's done right, and the way it was promoted in the run up gave the illusion that that was the intention.

I definitely think that promising OG BB meant being live with live evictions and not Seven's Survivoresque offering. But streaming all the old seasons on Youtube gave people the impression we'd get that back, so it's understandable viewers feel a bit let down, even cheated. I've never watched Love Island or MAFS and have no desire to. What they've come up with is a bit of a slap in the face.

You don’t need to watch love island because you’ve actually been watching its younger sister for the last 10 days. The very format that inspired how love island is set up has in turn decided to copy the copy of itself. It’s actually rather incestuous.

If anything, watching the current season of Love Island Australia, its more real than what the producers decide to show on the BB daily shows. And that's been pre-recorded months in advance.

You are not the only person to feel that way.

I have two friends who are now aged in their late thirties/early forties, who used to love Ten's seasons 20 years ago, who i told about their recent Big Brother revival, their responses being "it was fun when i was sharing a house at their (HMs) age" and "oh i haven't watched that show in 20 years".

Good thing TikTok has reeled in a whole new generation of fans.

I have mixed feelings about this BBAU Reboot, despite giving it an 8/10 now leaning toward a 7/10.

GOOD:
  1. Filmed at Dreamworld.
  2. Broadcast on Ten.
  3. Airing 6 nights per week.
  4. Live evictions.
  5. Live Nominations.
  6. 24/7 Livestream.
  7. Mike as narrator.
  8. Mel as host.
  9. Top tier pre-season marketing.
  10. Diversity of viewpoints, ages, genders, backgrounds, etc. among housemates.

BAD:
  1. Nearby rides within shouting distance.
  2. Ten is not very transparent - Jane Trump supporter, Sunday double eviction, Four week season, etc.
  3. Editing is very Channel 7 style.
  4. House is too big and colorful.
  5. Outdoor eviction set is too exposed to the weather.
  6. Voting is for entertainment purposes only - no results graph shown to disprove this statement.
  7. No Uncut show - that trans discussion would have been a perfect too-mature-for-the-daily-show to include.
  8. No Friday Night Games - perfect way to choose head of house and engage kids at the same time.
  9. No prizes - not even a Dreamworld day pass given to evictees.
  10. No sassy gay guy or farmer in the house.
Maybe i should accept that the media landscape has changed a lot since the 2000s golden era of BBAU.

I’m happy I waited a while to think about what I think overall cause my thoughts have changed constantly over the past two weeks, but I think I’ve come to my final verdict:

What I’ve liked:
- cast (only a few big personalities, well balanced in my opinion)
- Mel’s been the best thing about this revival, gonna go ahead and say I think she is the best presenter in Australia at the moment
- Live stream
- for the budget and constraints I think the stage looks awesome, and think they maximised to its potential.

What I think needs to change:
- I’ve flipped flopped abit on the house but two weeks in, I don’t really like it, not even that it looks cheap, too much colour and too much going on. Kinda looks gimmicky. Less is more. I really think they should be taking inspiration 2005-2007 and try to recreate a modern inspired version of it.
- editing, I tried to embrace the new style and thought it might help to appeal to new viewers, but after two weeks it just needs to go. It’s horrible. The main issue is the music. It feels overproduced and like a soap opera, a cloan of every other tv show. It’s just not big brother. The confessionals are way too constant and they interrupt the scenes for me. They’re just boring narration which can be inferred. This is why I prefer the live stream so much more, it’s uninterrupted footage that just plays out, and that’s what scenes should be in the DS obviously with editing for time constraints. The confessionals and music distract me and I can’t even enjoy the show tbh. I’d prefer them just go back to traditional diary room entries.
- producer bias and protection is so obvious and I think it’s literally a piss take when fans have footage from the live stream. A lot of the content on the daily shows is actually quite boring to be honest and it baffles my mind their choice of leaving out so much content from the live stream like a lot of drama and just entertaining conversations and moments. Imo they could have been producing some killer daily shows with the content from the live stream but they haven’t.
- I don’t mind other music during the live shows as long as the bb theme is the main one used. And as long as they don’t use the ones they currently use that makes it feel like a cheap dating show.
- live show formatting is horrible. If it wasn’t for the actual nominations and evictions, you wouldn’t know what the live show is for. At least 10 min eviction interviews should be done including voting graph, and a few video packages with housemates reaction. I also think they need more scattered content to build hype and cause yk it’s an eviction. Scattered interviews with nominees, videos from family and some video packages across the show would suffice for me. Also the eviction walkout needs abit more hype and should be a big moment, it feels sloppy and rushed. I think noms should be scattered across three segments after the main DS content has played out. I think the noms portion should start with DS content and then first batch of noms with a tally update. Then bulk of noms with evictees reaction and commentary after with tally update. And then final noms, tally update and live reveal. Tally should be constantly updated as it makes it more engaging for viewers. Noms feels abit too rushed. Video packages/promo before the noms in the DS portion would also help build hype.
- opening titles: I just don’t get why you can’t take 30 seconds out of a show when you have time for 2 minute recaps. Even just do it for nostalgia fans.
- mean bb needs to come back.

All in all, im gonna give this series a 5/10.

I skipped the Monday show to catch up on other things intending to double up on Tuesday but we're now at Friday and I've no intention of catching up. Not seen anything here all week that suggests it's worthwhile. On the plus side at 7 episodes that is 6 more than I lasted with BBUK this year.

If Channel 10 are treating this as a "pilot season" then viewers might as well too and wait until they do it properly before committing to watching an entire season.

I put this on my Twitter, but might as well share it here, since it's relevant to the review and the current situation:

Need to get this off my chest.I don't care if BBAU is the OG format or not. I don't care if anyone on the cast is controversial or not.I care if the show is authentic or not, that means NO producers' interference or favouritism.

I hate when the show favours one or two people more than the others. It feels forced, inauthentic, and NOT Big Brother.I don't care if Holly and Colin are controversial or not. I care if they get favoured editing or privileges than makes them better than others.

It is evident that Holly has special privileges, hinted by LONG and FREQUENT diary room sessions, and the bombshell Vinnie dropped during the movie night. This is what I hate. Edit favouring Holly and Colin, but not others. Show not matching live stream. This is what I hate.

I don't care what format the show is using (I watched both US and international versions) All I care, is just the show matching the reality. If the producers care about the show, they should have known this, and not just copying other formats or other versions.

Adding to that - casting influencers and scouting them for the MAJORITY of the cast also ruins the authenticity of the show - hence why I turned off the UK version. Thank the lord that there's only 2-3 in BBAU, but if it is the majority, then I will also turn off.

Viewers don't want to get insulted from the edits or promises they gave. Delivering expectations and delivering authenticity are basics of what makes the show good. If not, then the show would be in shambles, like it is right now. Do better.

I voted 7. I haven't watched any international BB on earnest. I missed it. I'm 44 and watched from the beginning and every iteration since. I'm grateful it is back because it's one of my favourite things ever! But there are a lot of issues with this season and I'm hoping they don't ruin the possibility of return long-term and improvement! But maybe I'm coping hard.

What I am particularly enjoying is watching with my teen daughter.

Channel 9 did a much better job with the live shows. I suspect its largely a budget issue, limited number of staff as well.
Unfortunately, 10 has been running on fumes and nearly dying for a decade or more. I'm happy ish with what is currently given with BB considering.

7 is extremely generous, I must say!

I reluctantly gave a 5 originally and thought I was being too generous.

I may have to revise tonight after seeing what the shit phone twist will be and how it will probably advantage Holly.
Yeah, I’m probably gonna come back to this in two weeks after the finale and downgrade revise my thoughts too. How sad that we are in this position… again.

Think what you will, but the revelations from yesterday’s Reddit drama hasn’t helped.
