Jamie: I actually like Jamie a lot in comparison to other winners. At this point of the first six, he is probably my second favourite. Aside from having his pants sag down to his knees and his overuse of the word like, I think he is mostly likeable. However, that is not to say that he is perfect, amazing and a legendary BB housemate. Much like the other members of this cast I see David as having three major points in the series: Pre-JamKat, JamKat and post-JamKat. In the beginning, he appears as this douche bro who is probably arrogant and stupid. Jamie and Katie both taught me not to judge a book by its cover, Jamie was in fact very relaxed, humble, intelligent, unjudgmental and just a nice guy. He does have that moment where he calls Katie a barbie doll but I think that was more just a poor use of words. Jamie was never volatile, never aggressive and reconciled any issues he had. It was easy to like him so I understand why he had support. The week he and Katie are nominated is probably him at his worst, where he like her spits the dummy and spends the week sulky. He manages to recover very easily, however, which then goes onto his 6-week under-the-radar narrative.
His relationship with Katie is without a doubt my favourite showmance in terms of character development and narrative. Jess and Marty were cute but they weren’t as complex as a couple as Jamie and Katie were. In the last few weeks before Katie’s eviction, they are the epicentre of the daily shows and all narratives once Anna and Michael are gone. Weeks 6-8 have such a ginormous focus on them it is impossible to not like them to some degree. He was an extremely patient man and must have been very interested in Katie and serious about it to be able to handle her at her insecure moments. All the teenage girls would have been simping hard over him from it so again, I’m not totally shocked he had support. When Katie leaves it left him the opportunity to shine on his own and I don’t really think he did that much. He was fine on his own but he disappears from the story later on which is mainly focused on David.
With John, Ashley and Gaelan all gone in the space of 24 hours Jamie lost his boy crew which then halted all their antics. I think towards the end the audience forgot he was there which allowed him to scrape through into the finale, also by David self-inflicting damage upon himself through his own self-destruction. It’s weird that if vote to save was used alone, he goes instead of Katie in week 8 and he doesn’t make it to the finale and doesn’t beat Camilla. Jamie won thanks to the evict votes which ended up making the whole vote to save method completely wasteful as he wins anyway with just vote to evict. I can’t think of a scenario where he would have been evicted in the series, maybe if he was up against Camilla and David but Camilla may have the edge there. I don’t think Jamie is a bad winner, he just isn’t a great one. I do like that he challenges stereotypes and made my assumptions of him wrong. I liked him and Katie, so I’m just fine with him winning.
Wow that was a lot to write. If only I put this much effort into my university studies.
