BBAU Rewatch

It's really weird to think that it wasn't so long ago I was watching this in my early teens and now I am older or the same age than almost 75% of the cast. That is a really weird feeling.
If you think that’s strange, my 22nd birthday was the day after the finale of this series and I’m now older than Karen was.

Yep going from Krystal’s age to Karen’s is just plain weird. Why do I feel like I look and act and relate more to Krystal than I do karen?

I really like 2006, I actually think it was an awesome season but just unfortunately became the beginning of the end. But I thought it was well cast and with enough twists to engage viewers without it being riddled with stunts.

I sneezed and was suddenly the same age as the "Dad" of the house in David :roflmao:

06 was the first season that I followed consistently as a kid (even though my folks would only let me watch FNL, Evictions and Nominations as they thought the Daily Show content was inappropriate lol), so I have very strong memories associated with this season. Unfortunately my most recent rewatch has shown me that the series is really tinted with rose coloured glasses for me. The season loses very big personalities once Michael and Anna go in back to back weeks, and once John and Ash get ejected there's this massive black cloud over the back half of the season, where it just feels like the soul of the season is gone. It doesn't help that David and Camilla slowly morph into massive fun-sucks around this time as well.

Nonetheless, it has some great moments, and I still have a schoolboy crush on Danielle Foote

One thing I have noticed from rewatching older BB seasons both in Australia and the US, I have noticed that people seem to lock and act younger now in comparison to 15-20 years ago. The 20-24 year olds appear so much older back then than they do now. I would stick out like a sore thumb in that crowd, I look like a child in comparison. And even so I look at people Like Sharna and Karen as if they are years and years older than the housemates, but yet, today I look many housemates in their 30s and they seem so much younger. Different generations probably have a more youthful spirit but it just seems people are appearing younger now. Perception of age does change, I saw something on reddit a while ago that was saying the characters in the golden girls and sex in the city are all written to be similar ages. So perception of age does change over time.

Yeah those late night 'quiz mania' style shows were big during that mid-00's period (possibly inspired by Big Brother Uplate?). I even think Brodie (from BB2002) ended up on one of them didn't he?
Yes! It was called Quizmania - also starring Nikki Osborne. It was my favourite one. 😆

Danielle looks so good these days and she is also worth millions!
Yeah, a quick Google suggests she's aged really gracefully and is doing very well for herself.

A couple other housemates from this season have popped up in the media in recent years and its kind of crazy to see the range of transformations. Krystal is... unrecognisable. To put it diplomatically.

Yes Krystal looks beautiful but I feel like I could have met her in the present and spent time with her and still not known it was her, she looks so different! But another one who is (presumably?) worth millions now too.

I guess for many HMs they went from early twenties to late thirties so I get that, but some still look like the same person at least.

The first few episodes of 06 so far are not as fast as BB5 but it's certainly not slow. Massive focus on David, Michael, Karen and Krystal. I think Karen and Krystal's secret relationship worked bette than the twins. At least Karen was a younger mum so the age may have thrown people off a bit in terms of being a mother. The two also seemed clear on needing to stay clear of each other and refraining from saying too much that may cause the other to accidentally blow cover.

I don't like the house design either, it looks like an ugly dolls house mixed with karaoke rooms.

Wow Camilla was so into David it's almost sad. That poor girl really had no idea she was fawning over a gay man.

In the 2nd week of 03 and I found the way they nominated very interesting. I do like that they did this at the time when big personalities clearly kept getting evicted. But I also found it a precursor and would be later formed into the “vote to evict” and “vote to save for the audience which is probably what you’re gonna see @Zcsund1234

I liked the Layout a bit more over 2005 though looking back, It had an interesting Kitchen corner leading to the bedroom, but basically felt a bit like one big room with things off to the sides like 01/02, just with a bit more depth.

I think I enjoyed the houses that had a few more twists and turns, nooks and crannies and had a bit more separation of areas the housemates hung out in I guess. 2004 at least had a kindof curved bedroom up to the bathroom and the Kitchen was detached across the yard like in 03.

In 2006 you had little corner for the dining room, the lounge/diary/punishment room area, the kitchen led into the bedroom which itself had like a fork formation with a little nook, and then that led into the bathroom. The Rewards room was also situated across the yard, and they sometimes used it for mid-week parties and stuff IIrc.

I... wouldn't have used those words. She looks like she's had some sort of work done on her face that has left her looking a bit gaunt. Not sure if it's lip filler or what.

Yes somehow I knew that word choice would not be someone everyone agreed with. She was an attractive teenager and is an attractive woman now (is attractive better?) but she looks completely unrecognisable now.

Danielle just got better and better. Anna still looks good. Krystal looks… different.

Krystal looks like a completely different person today, as does Karen. I actually remember not liking her much when I first watched but maybe now I'm older and also older than she was when she was on the show maybe I'll understand here more. I don't think the mother/daughter was is really that interesting and could have just not been bothered with. I'd rather if one pair is related than all others should be as well. Why was Big Brother so obsessed with past relationships around this time? Even in BBUS4,5,6,8 and 9 all of them had elements of pre existing relationships and BBAU followed this with all of Noble's last three seasons. I know BBUK had Samanda in BB8 but no idea if there was any other instances on the CH4 version.

Also the fake double eviction for the first Sunday night show is another example of a shoehorned twist to make up for the lack of eviction for the first week. I understand why fomuliacally there was no week one eviction but surly something else could have been done? I have no actual suggestion as to what could have been so what I'm saying is probably and empty complaint. It's not a huge issue but I'm just looking at every angle of opinions on my rewatches.

Also the scene of David coming out is a wholesome one. I did enjoy it. It was nice to see all the guys be so warm to him after it and it did show that younger Aussies had potential to be progressive at the time. In comparison to US BB and Survivor where around this time there still did exist occasional derogatory comments, so this was nice to see. I think it is interesting to think about what the reaction to something like this would be today. I personally think if someone was to come out today many people would be just as well receiving to it, but also at the same time people may feel there is no need to do so? I know many people of my age wouldn't see a need to come out and would view the person as no different regardless. So it is nice to reflect on the progression on Australian's views on sexuality. I can understand why David was contacted for BB2022.
