THE VIRUS 2020 - the good, the bad, and the ugly

The border issues are very complex. I wouldn't have any idea what would be the right way to go. I'm glad I am not in that position to decide. Probably only going to be in hindsight when we will find out what was the correct way to go about it.

On one hand the harsh state border closures have been keeping the outbreaks in check and have avoided many people dying. I truly think if we didn't have any border closures and lockdown especially in March last year we would have been a disaster like the UK and the USA. We have been very lucky in Australia. We have been able to contain it and in some states now it is mostly business as usual apart from obvious restrictions.

Then on the other hand we have the job losses and mental health problems with a lockdown and the borders shut. Victoria copping the worst of it unfortunately.

But then can you say someone's job is more important than someone's life? Jobs should come back after lockdown and they have. We are so lucky we haven't had the devastation of loss of life other countries have had. Young people are dying everywhere. For me personally I'd rather lose my job than my life or a relative to be honest.

It's a tricky one. I have empathy for both sides. Ideally it would be a happy medium.

A job is not more important than someone's life but it's definitely a very important part of it for many people. How will someone buy food, pay their rent or mortgage, support their families? It's important to balance community health and the economy. Without a healthy economy people won't be able to live comfortably.

A healthy economy will only be possible with a healthy population.

That's where something like Job Keeper should come imo but I know a lot of people who weren't able to receive it unfairly.

Yep. A lot of people missed out on it because they didn't qualify so they were struggling. Of course also the government takes away Job Keeper as soon as they could.
Nothing is going to be perfect and there will always be people who have a negative experience. That's just what life is.

But overall this country is very lucky and the type of support wouldn't have been possible without the strong economy we do have.

Not everyone in this country is lucky.
