THE VIRUS 2020 - the good, the bad, and the ugly

I think it is rubbish to be honest.

In my opinion, businesses are too focused on the "perfect" candidate rather than the "right" candidate and that is why roles are not filled. Most of them want experience etc.
I would disagree with that as well.

My job search as a 17-19 year old was a nightmare. Even supermarkets and other companies wanted people with experience. Every single place I saw that was 'low-skilled' (eg. restaurants, retail, supermarkets) wanted a range of experience (generally 2+ years) and other drastic criteria that a beginner wouldn't have. Opportunities are no longer available for those with no experience.
It is something that always irks me when I look at jobs and it only gets worse affable. I often read you must have had ten years experience in doing exactly this same kind of work... really? Have you people got no concept of transferable skills?
I know there are many workplaces out there that insist on this ridiculous concept of "experience" and while it may be easier in the short term for employers in the long run, imo, it is better to "catch them young and train them".

I'm an employer in a professional practice and my emphasis is on capability not experience. Over the years I don't remember one job candidate being "perfect" but most of them have been "right" for the job in the end. The software we use is specialized and I've yet to come across anyone who has heard of it let alone be able to use it and so they require on the job training.
Not trying to figure out how old you are, I promise lol. I met a guy who told me that he was looking for a job as forklift operator in the nineties. He had done a Tafe course to obtain his licence, paid for by the government to get him off the dole queue. It was a one week course including practical training.
No one would employ him unless he agreed to work several weeks for free to become an experienced operator. This indicates that the principle of 'learn on the job' is not new. I have never agreed with that attitude.

How would you change this or more importantly, what do you think caused this attitude in the first place?
Training staff takes time and costs a lot of money in real terms. It takes me one to two years to train employees to a level that they are relatively competent in the work they are given to do. During that time, workflow and productivity suffers so the new staff are always paid for the first year at the minimum wage for the Award.

I don't agree with not paying people at all while they are gaining experience...it's just not right and surely is against the law?

All of us have thought at one time or another that we could do things better and that we'd do such and such if we were in our politicians' shoes. The problem here is that we are NOT in their shoes. With our limited grasp of both, the big picture and the many little cogwheels required to make our societies function, we really haven't got a clue why any leader makes any particular decision.
This same thing could be applied to Melbourne and Dan yet there is many people on here baying for his replacement. We are not in ther shoes so we can have an opinion on what could have been done better, but if we are holding Dan to accountability, then we need to hold Trump to accountability for what he is responsible for (timely and strong border control, unifying messaging, not suggesting dangerous medical solutions that not only do not work but are actually life threatening in themselves).

With the lack of air travel, especially overseas at the moment, I wonder what the future of the Australian airline industry will look like?

There are flights to Antarctica for those that have the money and desperate to fly. You don't actually get off the plane just fly over and back to where you started from.

I wouldn't compare Trump with Andrews. One is a socialist and one is a conservative 😁 - ergo Andrews is dangerous by just existing. Jsyk... judging by the 24/7 Trump bashing I witness, you ARE holding the greatest ever POTUS accountable, not only for his actions but also for crap he has never done or said.

Trump is a foreign leader. Andrews is not, so I do not understand why there would be a need for equal accountability in an Australian context.

Do you not think what any POTUS says or does has no effect on Australia?

The POTUS can have an impact on many countries but that does not mean Australians and other non-Americans should always hold him accountable to the same degree as their own leaders.

What does Trump have to do with pandemic management in this country?

where did I say he had anything to do with the pandemic management in this country?

Isn't the pandemic the context of this discussion?

I said "Trump is a foreign leader. Andrews is not, so I do not understand why there would be a need for equal accountability in an Australian context."

You responded with "Do you not think what any POTUS says or does has no effect on Australia?"

Maybe I misinterpreted but my impression is that you were insinuating that the POTUS does have an effect on this country.

Yes the panedemic was where Trump came up, however my response above was a more general statement. For instance we are linked with the US through trade, through foreign policy, through allies in potential wars and economically if the US goes into recession so does many other countries. etc. So it is going to be natural that Austalians are going to be intereted in how the pandemic is impacting the USA and how Trump has managed aspects of this.

Why do people holding Dan accountable need to do the same with Trump? We can scrutinise and criticise Trump but the public health decisions made in the country he leads do not apply to ours. I do not understand the "need" aspect to your post.
