Redemption Island the person who wins the challenge stays there and continues to compete with the hope of returning to the game, this seems to be a one off.

I am not watching it the show at the moment but it looks like they have just swapped the redemption and exile island names because on the US version they don't send people to Exile Island when they voted out, they are usually sent there before tribal council so they miss out on all the strategy talk that happens back at camp.
 
Honestly if they sent me to exile or desert island i would ask for a security guard. Imagine being on your own at night, no way that would be too scary
